Remembering & Reflecting

I remember winters when my sister Pam and I tunneled through many feet of snow to create forts on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.
Today the climate has changed and we can no longer count on a deep snow cover every winter (we were blessed with an abundance this holiday season though).

I remember when our gardening season began April 15th and was over by Nov 15th.
Today we run field staff from April 1st (March 25th some years) to Dec 10th.

I remember playing kick the can, flashlight tag and being paid to pluck dandelions (a penny for two) from Mom and Dad's lawn.
Today kids spend so little time outside there is a new term coined Nature Deficit Disorder!

I remember and respect our client's faith in us these past 30 years and our staff's dedication to their craft. Today, and throughout our 30 year history, relationship deficit has not been a concern at HLG. We have always prioritized and honored all of our connections.

As our planet and social environment continue to shift, Heidi's Lifestyle Gardens shifts as well. We continue to innovate and educate. From Rain Gardens to Edible Gardens, Sustainable Landscapes and coming soon... Healing Gardens that resonate with your soul, we continue to provide our clients with the best in garden and landscape services. The White House continues to improve on their Edible Gardens by extending the season with High Tunnels (similar to big cold frames). Watch this segment to learn about High Tunnels and how you can extend your edible garden season. See video on YouTube.

I believe being in nature and appreciating God's green earth is the most healing experience and one that I regularly seek and wish to share. Contact us to get started, or continue your journey, to a meaningful garden experience.

Garden of the Month

January's Garden of the MonthAny unique display you are interested in can be had with HLG.  In this winter garden we have strung garland lights along with lit grapevine spheres for our client.

Taylor, along with Jamie and the rest of our lighting team, became monkeys and climbed into this white pine to create this custom effect.

Prime Time for Garden Design

January is the month that our designers go back to our studio and begin creating new spaces and experiences on paper. We focus on native plants and oldies but goodies, while still exploring new cultivars.

The winter months are our dormant season and the optimum time to design gardens. There is ample time in January and February to create a thoughtful and thorough garden plan. With a well constructed plan in hand, we can hit the ground running come spring.

Winter is the longest season we experience, thus the "bones" of your garden, your winter design, is possibly the most important. What a better time than the middle of winter to realistically assess what form and structure you are experiencing now along with dreaming for the color to come in the spring.

Let our experienced team help you uncover your garden glory.

Around Town

The team at HLG started the new year off right by attending the Northern Green Expo at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Put on by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA), the Northern Green Expo is a time when professionals in the green industry get together for the largest trade show and educational conference in the north central region.
Northern Green Expo
For four days the HLG team joined with other green industry professionals to learn about the hottest new products in both hard goods and plant material. We expanded our knowledge by attending a myriad of short courses on expansive topics like storm water management, plant diversity or safety; we attained recertification or licensure; we networked and socialized with colleagues.

This year Heidi presented "favorite plant combinations" at the Expo. The 2010 Expo is sure to be a great way for the HLG team to grow and help our clients in the 2010 season.

Heidi has been on the Board of Directors for the MNLA for the past 4 years and was just elected Secretary/Treasurer of the illustrious organization at the annual meeting. She will now serve on its Executive Board.

Winter Minestrone Soup

Minestrone SoupNothing's more comforting on a cold winter's day than a cup of hot hearty soup.

Bursting with a multitude of naturally sweet root vegetables and bolstered by red and/or white beans, this hefty soup makes a meal for 6 to 8 people-and you may have leftovers. It is, as with many soups, thicker and even more delicious the second day. Add ½ to 1 cup of water before reheating, if you want a brothier soup.
