E-Connections Newsletter / CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg November 2010 |
Dear Friends of CIS,
On September 28, Communities In Schools watched with great pride as CIS student Rachael Wise spoke on a national panel at NBC's "Education Nation" summit in New York City. This was a great honor and experience for Rachael as NBC flew Rachael and her CIS Site Coordinator to New York as their guest to take part in this nationally televised event. I hope you will take a moment to read the MSNBC.com article about her. The truth is, while we are most proud of Rachael and know she was an excellent representative for CIS, we also know that we have hundreds more students like Rachael-students who have the ability and drive to succeed, despite difficult circumstances and barriers to overcome. When given the appropriate support and access to resources that CIS provides, we witness hundreds of student "success stories" every year.
In addition to Rachael's, other "success stories" are shared below - all made possible by you, our partners, donors and volunteers. From books for students, to concert tickets as reward for good grades and attendance - or even a home in which to live - Communities In Schools makes the connections between those students and families in need with those who have the desire and ability to give. Many thanks to each of you for your support, which enables us to give students these life-changing opportunities.
At this time I'd also like to share some personal news: this past week I accepted the Executive Director position with MeckEd (Mecklenburg Citizens for Public Education) and will begin there on January 3, 2011. This was a difficult decision for me personally, as my 4-1/2 years with Communities In Schools has been a most rewarding and fulfilling experience.
In my 30 years as an educator, I know first-hand that CIS is one of the most effective programs in the country dedicated to serving at-risk youth and improving stay-in-school and graduation rates. I have great respect for all of our staff, whom I know have tremendous expertise in executing our mission and have students' best interests at heart with every decision. The organization is strong financially, and I have the utmost confidence in our senior leadership team and Board of Directors, who will ensure a smooth transition to a new director. In my new position with MeckEd, I will continue to advocate for CIS and the thousands of students and schools who benefit from the CIS "safety net" of services.
CIS is grateful to the generous foundations, corporations, faith communities, individual donors, and volunteers who believe in CIS and understand the great value it provides the Charlotte community. During this holiday season, we wish to take this opportunity to say thank you once again for being part of the solution and all the best to you and your families for a safe and happy holiday season.
Bill Anderson, Ed.D.

CIS-Charlotte Student participates on National Panel at NBC's "Education Nation"
| |
A highlight of Rachael's trip was meeting one of her personal heroes, General Colin Powell. |
Rachael Wise, a CIS student at Garinger High School, represented CIS and youth across the country when she spoke on a national panel as part of NBC's "Education Nation" event September 28 in New York's Rockefeller Plaza. The panel, moderated by NBC's Brian Williams, consisted of top education leaders and elected officials, including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
Rachael, who had never been to New York City or flown before, said it was the "opportunity of a lifetime." She is grateful to CIS and especially her Site Coordinator at Garinger, Sophia Davis, who recommended her for the panel. While in New York, Rachael was interviewed by MSNBC - click here to read the article and learn more about this impressive young lady!

Making Straight A's is the "Ticket"!
Dreams really can come true, as Kiana and her sister Ashley realized when they learned they would get free tickets to the Carrie Underwood concert, courtesy of CIS! CIS received 30 tickets to the concert through the Mayor's Office and Ticketmaster's "Tickets for Kids" program to give to deserving students.
Ki'Yonna Brown, CIS Site Coordinator at Albemarle Road Middle School, gave four tickets to Kiana and Ashley for making straight A's this past quarter and having excellent attendance. The girls were thrilled and took their mother and stepsister for a "girls night out." The girls' mother sent this photo (above) to Ms. Brown, along with this thank-you note:
"Thank you so much for awarding the girls the tickets to Carrie Underwood. They had a wonderful time. Times are tough for us right now and I know that this meant the world to the girls." |

Teen donates 1,500 Books to Schools
Many thanks to Charlotte Country Day student Connor Jones, who recently donated over 1,500 books to Druid Hills Elementary, Randoph Middle School, and West Charlotte High School.
Connor, an avid reader and a fan of the Harry Potter series, knows the great enjoyment books can give. He decided of his own initiative to organize a book drive this summer and give the books to kids who might not have any books of their own. |
