E-Connections Newsletter / CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg                                       Nov 2009

Dear Friends of CIS,
New Header for E-Newsletter_11-2009

The school year is well underway and CIS has been busy enrolling new students and recruiting volunteers and partners to support our schools. Schools can't do it alone, and support from corporate, faith-based, and community volunteers is invaluable to our mission to help students succeed in school and in life. If you or your company or organization would like to know more about our volunteer and partnership opportunities, please contact Sherry Waters, CIS Resource & Partners for Success Coordinator. Partners for Success is a joint collaboration and initiative with Social Venture Partners to help businesses and organizations partner with a neighborhood school to provide a myriad of support ranging from financial and in-kind resources to tutors, mentors, and lunch buddies. Our students need you, and I'm confident you and your organization will find the experience equally rewarding.

CIS received wonderful news in October when we were honored as one of two local recipients of the 2009 Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI) grant. CIS will receive $200,000 of unrestricted grant funding over the next two years, as well as valuable leadership training and development.

I would also like to highlight this year's CIS Holiday Card. The cards are a wonderful way to honor and remember friends and family, while supporting CIS and the students we serve.  Our holiday card showcases the artistic creativity of one of our middle school students and shares our wish for every child this holiday season. Additionally, this year's card is printed in full color for the first time as a result of our staff's procurement of more cost effective printing with one of our partners. To view a sample of the card and place your order online, click Holiday Cards on our website.

As always, thank you for your interest and support of CIS. All the best to you and your family during the coming holiday season!

"It truly is a blessing to be able to escape the pressure of the workplace, and find oneself engulfed in another world....the unique world of a middle school student."

BofA Mentors at MLK

Last year, Bank of America initiated a partnership with CIS
and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to encourage their employees to volunteer as mentors for several targeted middle schools and an e-mentoring program for high school students.

Ryan Radecki and Ryan Everett, both Bank of America employees, were mentors last year to two students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School. They enjoyed it so much that they are back at MLK again this year, working with the same students.

Thanks for making Lowcountry on the Green a great success!

Lowcountry LogoMany thanks to all of you who supported our new event, Lowcountry on the Green, on September 26!  The evening featured lowcountry cuisine, southern-style spirits, and dancing to Smitty Flynn and the Rivieras. Despite the pouring rain early in the evening, nearly 200 guests attended and had a lowcountry good time!

A special thank you to CIS board member Lisa Lewis Dubois and her husband, Philip Dubois, for hosting the event in their home; to Honorary Chairs, Sue and Pete Gorman; and to all of our party hosts and event sponsors, including Continental Tire and UPS.
