Communities In Schools (CIS) of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
|
Happy New Year from Communities In Schools! We hope you and your family had a safe and restful holiday. Here at CIS we are ready for a busy 2009 and excited to continue working with our students, especially our 400+ seniors who are on track to graduate in June.
While we all experienced quite a bit of "bad news" during the last quarter of 2008, here at CIS we remain positive and eager to share our "good news" with you. If you would like some inspiration to kick-off your new year, I recommend taking a few minutes to read some of our student success stories featured here. There's Jordan Plummer, a senior at the PLC who will graduate in June, and Edwin Waleh and Shanté Wade, two recent CIS graduates who are making their way in the world. Their stories continue to inspire us at CIS - we hope they will do the same for you.
CIS has also received some very positive media exposure lately, including a wonderful article about the PLC in the Dec. 5 issue of The Charlotte Weekly. Also in December, CIS was featured on a talk show on Government Channel 16. I was a guest, along with Superintendent Gorman and Police Chief Rodney Monroe. Click this link if you would like to view a two-minute clip of the show.
We continue to need volunteers to be tutors and mentors for our students. We could use 100 (or more!) folks like Earleen Mobley, a CIS volunteer featured below. If Ms. Mobley's experience inspires you, please make a New Year's resolution to contact our Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible and start making a difference in a student's life!
Sincerely,
Bill Anderson, Ed.D.

Planning for her Future:
PLC Senior Jordan Plummer
Jordan Plummer is making big plans for her future. She has a deep love of horses and has ridden all her life; eventually she'd like to have her own barn and business working with disabled and emotionally challenged children using equine therapy. Two years ago, she never believed she'd be able to graduate from high school, let alone pursue her dreams. Read More

Catching up with CIS GRADUATES
Edwin Waleh
Edwin immigrated to the U.S. from Liberia when he was just 13 years old. Speaking little English and with a strong accent, he had a difficult start in school here in the U.S. In high school, he joined CIS and was mentored by his CIS Site Coordinator, Daryle Clark (Mr. Clark is now our Middle Schools Program Director). Edwin credits CIS and Mr. Clark with helping him not only graduate from high school (West Mecklenburg 2002), Read More
Shanté Wade
CIS graduate Shanté Wade never imagined she'd be practicing her suturing skills on a 200-pound hog - but that's exactly what she did this past fall as part of a college internship at Carolinas Medical Center. "CMC has an Animal OR where students can hone their surgical skills before working on a human being," explained Shanté. "I was suturing the stomach of a very large pig - fortunately, the pig was heavily sedated," she smiled. Read More
