Principal's Letter
Dear Parents,
It was a very good start to the school year. I wish to thank everyone for doing their part to ensure traffic flowed smoothly and children were getting to school on time and ready. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Back to School Night this Wednesday and/or Thursday, August 24th and 25th. Please join me in the cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. for a 30 minute presentation and then on to individual classrooms. This evening is devoted to parents so they may hear updated district policies, school initiatives, grade level curriculum and classroom expectations.
Hope to see you there!
Dr. Katie Root
Important information about how you'll receive communications from Laguna and SUSD beginning in 2011/2012 - PLEASE READ!
This year ALL communication will be going through the school website and SchoolFusion. It is critical you sign up for the District parent communication tool, called SchoolFusion. You will be notified immediately when new information is placed on the webpage, you will have access to each of your child's classroom webpages, and you will be notified of emergencies as they are unfolding with the most up-to-date reports from the District and the school. Please log on to the District webpage at www.susd.org and forward to the parent page for full directions on how to enroll in SchoolFusion. You only have to do this once and it will automatically roll you over each year as your children progress through the K-12 system. Please do this now!
District Web Site (susd.org) - Click on "New Users" in the top green bar to the far right, beneath the District's address and follow all instructions.
Direct Link to SchoolFusion - Follow all instructions.

WORDMASTERS
WordMasters is a national vocabulary program that helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. It challenges students to learn challenging new vocabulary then complete analogies based on the relationships among the words they have learned. Laguna students have really excelled in WordMasters in past years!! The program is funded by Laguna PTO and run by our parent volunteers. Grades 3, 4, and 5 participate. This is a wonderful way to get involved in your child's classroom. We need at least one volunteer per classroom, though more are welcome and encouraged! The program begins during the second academic quarter and requires some at-home prep, as well as a weekly trip into the classroom to help students learn new vocabulary words.
There will be an informative WordMasters meeting in September. Volunteer sign up sheets will be in each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classroom beginning August 25th, Back-to-School Night. Please sign up if you're even a little bit interested so we can let you know when the September meeting is to learn more about this great program. This may be just the volunteer opportunity you've been looking for! For more information, please contact Polly Wolff at polly@thewolffpack.com.

Notes from the Health Office
Welcome back Laguna!
Greetings to you from the health office! I look forward to taking care of your children this school year. It is hot outside so don't forget to send a water bottle to school every day and remind your children that the PTO offers a Cool Room for children who need indoor lunch recess.
Thank you for completing the new SUSD Health History-Medical Emergency Card, please keep me updated with any changing health issues, immunizations given and emergency contact information throughout the year.
If your child has a medical condition, please stop by my office or call me to discuss school care. All medications given at school need to be provided by parents. If you would like to have pain/fever medication, cough drops, or other medication available to your child, you must bring a supply to the health office in their sealed, original packaging and a medication form must be completed.
Also, please inform me if your child has a communicable disease or health issue including, but not limited to, strep throat, lice, chicken pox, and pinkeye. I track these issues on an annual basis.
Student accident and health insurance is available to all SUSD students. You can enroll online at www.studentinsurance-kk.com. If you are interested, I also have a flier available in the main office and the health office.
If you are cleaning out closets and getting rid of old clothes please keep the Health Office in mind. I'm always in need of small shorts for kids who have spills and accidents. Size 6 and 8 elastic waist athletic shorts work best. If you are able to donate, other needed supplies for the health office are: new underwear size 6, new small socks, 100% juice box drinks, and small water bottles.
I wish you all a healthy and safe 2011-2012 school year.
Nurse Patty
