Greetings Neighbors,
Hope you're enjoying the end of summer. Though the season is winding down, there are still numerous opportunities to get outdoors, take a hike, clean up our streets, and enjoy the scenery our neighborhoods offer. It's also a perfect time to catch up with current neighbors and learn more about connecting with new ones. Read on for details!
Tomorrow: Collaborative Graffiti Cleanup

 

The Goose Hollow Foothills League and the Northwest District Association are teaming up with the City of Portland to scrub out some graffiti this Saturday. Neighbors from both sides of Burnside will meet with graffiti abatement crews, who will paint and power wash businesses while volunteers clean graffiti in the public right-of-way.

If you'd like to lend a hand in this clean up effort, just show up - no experience required, and all supplies will be provided by the City's Graffiti Abatement Program.

 McCarthy Creek Clean Up 
Help preserve habitat for coho salmon and other native animal and plant species. Join the West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District at McCarthy Creek this Saturday morning to remove trash and debris and invasive plants.

Communications Coffee Klatch
At this informal gathering, join other neighborhood leaders to share tips and insight about communications. This is your opportunity to learn from your peers, exchange best practices and walk away with stronger relationships across neighborhood boundaries.

Arlington Heights Neighborhood Social & Annual Meeting
You are cordially invited to the Arlington Heights Neighborhood Social. Come and renew old acquaintances, meet new neighbors, and catch up on neighborhood news. If convenient, bring an appetizer or snack to share; beverages will be provided. 
This is a great opportunity to find out what is going on and weigh in on neighborhood issues. Receive an update on neighborhood activities, including discussions with the Washington Park Alliance, the Oregon Zoo Master Plan, and skateboarding in the neighborhood. Members will also elect neighborhood board members.

Neighborhood Small Grants - Application Available!
Logo  Neighbors West-Northwest (NWNW) and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement are pleased to announce the sixth year of the Neighborhood Small Grant program. Neighbors West-Northwest will be awarding
approximately $12,500 to projects benefiting the community within the NWNW coalition area. For more information, visit the NWNW website.

Friendly House Balch Creek Nature Hike 

Friendly House invites you to join Lucy from the Forest Park Conservancy for a for a hike up Balch Creek Canyon on the Lower Macleay Trail in Forest Park. Learn about the history of the park, wildlife, identifying native plants and the important work of the Forest Park Conservancy.

 

Meet at Friendly House, then go on about a one-hour hike through the park and return to Friendly House for salads and sandwiches. Free and open to all ages.

CRSC Unveils New Website

The Cornell Road Sustainability Coalition is pleased to reveal its new website! The site explains the purpose of the CRSC as well as providing discussion for each of its goals. An interactive map identifies locations for current concerns and future improvements, allowing neighbors to better understand the plan for improving sustainability and quality of life for everyone who uses Cornell Road and enjoys the Balch Creek Watershed and Forest Park. Go to  www.cornellroad.org to share your experiences and participate in the online discussion

PHLUSH in the L.A. Times
A recent feature in the L.A. Times talked about the past, present and future of the Portland Loo, and why other cities are so interested in this public sanitation solution. The article highlighted the actions of PHLUSH members to help design and promote the Loo in Portland and beyond. PHLUSH believes that toilet availability is a human right and that well-designed sanitation systems restore health to our cities, our waters and our soils. Read more about them in the Times!

Molly Danielsson and Mathew Lippincott of PHLUSH will be speaking at  351 NW 12th Ave. on Wednesday, September 26th at 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. They will present case studies of ecological sanitation technologies and examines the legality of various technologies. Visit the PHLUSH website to find out more about their statewide tour and efforts to expand DEQ regulations to include ecological sanitation. 
Biking in NW Portland Featured on Bike Portland 
With the recent Bike-In Movie and the Historic NW Portland Pedalpalooze ride, bikes have been out and about at events in NWDA. Additionally, future possibilities for bike riding in the neighborhood were recently featured in a guest post on local bike blog, Bike Portland.

The article, written by NWDA resident and volunteer Rebecca Hamilton, focuses on the future of biking in the Northwest District and considers how a neighborhood cycling culture might compliment the neighborhood's distinctive historic character. Check it out!
 
Candidates Forum
Neighbors West-Northwest, Southwest Neighborhoods Inc., and the Multnomah Neighborhood Association are co-sponsoring a candidates forum featuring City Council candidates Amanda Fritz and Mary Nolan, and mayoral candidates Charlie Hales and Jefferson Smith. The evening will be moderated by Portland State University professor of Political Science, Dr. Richard Clucas.
