August 2012
Greetings Neighbors,
We're not even going to ask if it's hot enough for you, because we all know the answer to that! The mercury should be dropping soon, but summer's not over. Fortunately our area has a few options if you need to cool off, like shady parks, refreshing fountains, and forested trails. And we have plenty of outdoor events coming up, including a bike-in movie, the Pearl Party, a Downtown Yard Sale, and the return of the Swifts! Keep reading for more info.
Bulky Waste Collection & Recycling Event - Tomorrow!

Need to clean out your garage, basement, or closets? Holding onto some dead batteries, CFL bulbs, or chunks of styrofoam? How about that old futon that needs to go?

Here's a chance to unload some stuff without having to truck it out the the smelly waste transfer station.

Neighbors West-Northwest is holding a bulky waste and recycling cleanup in our own backyard. Come to the Con-way lot at the corner of NW Savier & 20th. We're asking for a donation of $10 per carload or cargo bike, or $15 per truck or trailer (no commercial vehicles).

See our website for a list of accepted materials and more information.

Date: Saturday, August 18th

Downtown Portland Annual Yard Sale
The Downtown Neighborhood Association's Annual Yard Sale will take place on Saturday, August 25th in Downtown's front yard:  the South Park Blocks between SW Clay and SW Market. Sell some extra stuff or find some new treasures while meeting your neighbors, and pick up some fresh produce at the Portland Farmers Market while you're there.

Table space is available on a first-come basis. If at the end of the sale people wish to donate their unsold items, trucks will be available to deliver those items to Goodwill or another charitable organization.
Contact Alyssa Sellers for more information.

Date: Saturday, August 25th, 2012
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Place: South Park Blocks between SW Clay and SW Market
Pear, Cherry, Plum or Crabapple?
These are all common street trees in the Northwest District. Learn how to tell the difference and help out the neighborhood by volunteering at the NWDA 2012 street tree inventory work days. No experience required. Our next work day is Saturday, Aug. 25 at Friendly House, 1737 NW 26th Avenue. To learn more and sign up, visit the NWDA website.
2nd Annual Bike-In Movie at Wallace Park

Hop on your two-wheeler (or trike or unicycle) and pedal over to Wallace Park for the Northwest District Association's 2nd Annual Bike-In Movie. Come early to stake out your spot on the grass and enjoy a pre-show band and climbing wall before the main feature: the bike-themed cult classic Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

There will be plenty of bike parking courtesy of Shift to Bikes; the Bicycle Transportation Alliance will have maps and other resources; and REI mechanics will be on hand to do bike tune-ups. The NWDA will be selling discounted children's helmets ($5) for those with limited resources.

Attendees can enjoy free popcorn or are welcome to bring their own (non-alcoholic) beverages and snacks, and bike-powered food vendor Taco Pedaler will be selling fresh tacos.

The NWDA's Safety and Livability Committee sponsors bike-in movies to encourage and reward bike riding in the Northwest District as an alternative to driving. This event is supported by a Neighborhood
Small Grant from Neighbors West-Northwest and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement.

Date: Saturday, September 8th, 2012
Time: Band and climbing wall, 6:30 p.m.; Movie at 7:30 p.m.
Place: Wallace Park, NW 25th & Raleigh

The Pearl Party is put on by the Pearl District Neighborhood Association and is its major fundraiser each year. The funds raised are returned directly to the community in the form of neighborhood improvement projects.

Vaux's Swifts Return to Chapman
It's almost that time of year, when our feathered friends the Vaux's Swifts come back to roost in the chimney of Chapman Elementary School, at NW 26th and Pettygrove. Their nightly return is a stunning show that attracts hundreds of spectators every sunset from late August through September. The Swift's flying manoeuvers are dazzling, and things can take a dramatic turn when a bird of prey arrives on the scene.

If you're coming from outside of the area to watch the Swifts or bringing guests, please be considerate of Chapman neighbors: use transit options other than driving if possible; leash and pick up after your dog; dispose of trash; remember that alcoholic beverages and smoking are illegal on public school grounds.

The Vaux's Swifts are one of the unique and amazing sights of Portland. Be sure to catch the show at least once this season. For more information about the Swifts, visit the Audubon Society website.
