Linnton NA Votes to Oppose Coal Trains
By Brian Hoop With 47 people in attendance, the Linnton Neighborhood Association membership voted at their July 11th meeting to oppose proposals for the export of coal through NW states and Portland. Key points raised in opposition included: 1) NW values and public policies are intended to prevent climate change; 2) coal is toxic to the health of humans and our environment; 3) coal is a risky bulk mineral market and poor strategy for jobs; and 4) coal trains on local tracks are noisy and back up traffic at crossings. Guest speaker Daniel Serress of Columbia Riverkeepers made the case against coal, highlighting the detrimental impact of coal exports on our neighborhoods and their global impact on climate change. David Harvey of Gunderson Rail made the case in support of the Ambre Energy proposal's barge plan as potentially bringing hundreds of manufacturing jobs to Portland for several years. The LNA's motion praised Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber's call for federal agencies to evaluate the global impact of the six proposals, including a broad environmental analysis examining their impact on climate change. In addition, the motion called upon Gov. Kitzhaber and Oregon's Division of State Lands to not approve this summer the proposal by Ambre Energy for developing export facilities at the Port of Morrow in Boardman and the Port of St. Helens' Port Westward sites. Read the full text of the motion here.
