Neighborhoods Cleaned Up in April
Northwest Portland neighborhoods are a little cleaner this month thanks to several cleanup events that took place in April in conjunction with Earth Day. The annual events in Forest Park, the Pearl District, the Northwest District, and Sylvan Highlands were a huge success.

At Polish the Pearl, over 100 volunteers collected 2,000 lbs. (yes, one ton!) of mixed waste and 75 lbs. of recyclables, while Graffiti Busters tackled graffiti. Sylvan-Highlands saw 44 volunteers remove 2,000 lbs of mixed waste. Northwest District neighbors continued their monthly efforts to remove litter, graffiti, and beautify the neighborhood. Forest Park Neighborhood Association's annual clean up and garlic mustard pull hauled in 800 lbs of invasive vegetation (see article below). Meanwhile, the Goose Hollow Foothills League is planning a graffiti cleanup on Saturday, June 16. Watch the GHFL website for more info.

Thanks to all the volunteers for their help in keeping our neighborhoods clean!

Time for Garlic Mustard to Go
Garlic mustard plantsResidents and friends of Forest Park are on a mission to get rid of garlic mustard. No, they're not cleaning out their refrigerators. Garlic mustard sounds like a condiment (and was originally introduced to North America as a culinary herb), but it's actually an invasive plant that crowds out native plants and wildflowers along roadsides and in shady areas such as forest understories.

Garlic mustard matures in the spring, and once it flowers and goes to seed, it's all over. Literally, it's all over the place - the stuff spreads like wildfire. Every year at this time, in coordination with Skyline Ridge Neighbors, the Skyline Grange, Metro, and West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation, the Forest Park Neighborhood Association coordinates a garlic mustard pull, targeting the plant. With the sudden warm weather, it's even more urgent this year to get out and clear out the garlic mustard before it has a chance to form seed pods. The FPNA recently gathered a whopping 800 pounds of the stuff, clearing room for native species to thrive.

For more information about garlic mustard eradication in Forest Park, check out this article on the FPNA's website.

NWDA Tree Inventory Needs Volunteers
The Northwest District is one of three neighborhoods in the City of Portland's 2012 tree inventory. Volunteers will identify, measure, and map street trees. This is a great opportunity to participate in tree stewardship, improve your tree identification skills and learn more about assessing tree health and site conditions.

Team Leaders must attend a training session and commit to participate in three inventory work days. Training is offered on Saturday, June 23, at SE Uplift at 3534 SE Main St. Sign up for one session, either 8:30 AM-noon or 1:00-4:30 PM. You can register for the training online.

Inventory work days will be held on Saturdays from 8:30 am to noon from June through September. Register as either a Team Leader or as a general volunteer. The NWDA work days are 7/288/259/8, &  9/22. For more information, see the NWDA website
