January 2012
Greetings Neighbors,

Welcome to 2012! NWNW is starting off the new year with some new faces: a new NWNW board president, a new crime prevention coordinator, and an as-yet-to-be-determined event coordinator/office assistant. We've been hard at work sifting through stacks of resumes and look forward to meeting our future staff member. Read on to find out what else is new in the new year and what's going on in your neighborhood.
NWNW Elects New Board President

At its December meeting, the Neighbors West-Northwest Board elected Peter Stark as Board President. Peter formerly served as the president of the Hillside Neighborhood Association. He is a board member and past president of the Central Eastside Industrial Council (CEIC), and is the current chair of the Cornell Road Sustainability Coalition, working with stakeholders to preserve the Cornell Corridor through sustainable planning and balanced use. His 20-plus years of civic involvement have spanned local development and planning along with City, Metro, and Multnomah County politics.
New NW Crime Prevention Coordinator
NWNW welcomes Jenni Bernheisl, the new City Crime Prevention Coordinator for our neighborhoods. A native Oregonian who has been with the City's Crime Prevention Program for over 4 years, she brings with her diverse skills and interests, including organizing neighborhood watches, prescription drug abuse prevention, and elder safety and personal safety.

Jenni previously worked with communities in Portland's East and Southeast neighborhoods. During this time she partnered with multiple agencies and community groups to address considerable safety and crime issues at the NE 82nd Ave. & Jonesmore Max platform and bus stop, making it safer for both riders and pedestrians. Her other accomplishments include starting the city's successful prescription drug turn-in program in 2009 to promote safe disposal and prescription drug abuse awareness.

Jenni has also served on the board of Ride Connection
for nearly three years, and volunteers with the Portland Police Bureau's WomenStrength program as a self-defense instructor
.
