December 2011
Greetings Neighbors,

As we wonder where the last year went, a new one is already in sight. Thanks to everyone for another year of hard work. Looking back on 2011's achievements, we're also excited about the projects neighbors have planned for the next year. We'll be taking a short break at the end of the month, so if you have urgent business, contact us before Dec. 23 - otherwise, see you in 2012!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from the NWNW staff!

NWNW Bids Farewell to Staffer Alison Wallisch

Neighbors West-Northwest is sad to announce the departure of Community Support Coordinator Alison Wallisch. After serving on the NWNW staff for four years, Alison will be leaving Portland to pursue other opportunities on the East Coast.

Since beginning her stint here as an AmeriCorps member, Alison has become an indispensable part of the NWNW team. Her accomplishments are too numerous to list, but among other things, she's been key in coordinating neighborhood clean-ups, our monthly coffee klatch series, and the Solarize Northwest program. If you've been active in your neighborhood, chances are she's helped you with something, from organizing a major event to cleaning up litter to making copies, and everything in between.

We'd like to thank Alison for all of her hard work and service to our coalition neighborhoods and community. All of us at the NWNW office will miss her, especially our canine staff members. We wish Alison the best of luck in her new endeavors and new home.

SHNA Transportation Survey Results Are In

Results are in from the Sylvan-Highlands Neighborhood Association's transportation survey - and residents had a lot to say about unsafe traffic situations in the area. The survey, initiated by the SHNA Transportation Committee, was completed by a total of 114 people.

Respondents weighed in on numerous issues, including traffic calming, dangerous intersections, and pedestrian and bicycle safety. Of those responding, a large majority supported potential improvements such as a roundabout at Barnes Rd. and Skyline Blvd., speed bumps on Skyline, and a sidewalk and/or bike lane along Skyline.

You can download the complete survey results, with respondents' comments here. If you have questions or would like to offer additional comments, visit the SHNA website or email info@sylvanhighlands.org or transportation@sylvanhighlands.org.

Solarize Northwest Wrap Up and Home Tour

NW Portland House with Solar InstallationDecember 4th marked the final celebration for Solarize Northwest.  About 30 people attended, including 20 homeowners and key staff people from Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, Energy Trust of Oregon and Mr. Sun Solar.  The event was hosted by the BPS's Lee Rahr at her new home in the Willamette Heights area of the Northwest District.  Mr. Sun Solar provided refreshments and Alison Wallisch sent invitations to those who expressed interest in the Solarize NW program.

After socializing and a Powerpoint presentation featuring photos of the new systems installed as a result of the project, the group walked and visited five of the installations, including one that had just been connected to the grid on Thursday.  One enthusiastic homeowner ran into his home to get his iPad so everyone could view how much electricity his system was currently producing. "I've saved 7 trees in CO2 emissions since my hookup last month!" he proudly told the group.

The gathering was a helpful opportunity for homeowners to meet one another, discussing their changes in energy usage and love of their new systems. Several homeowners who missed the deadline for Solarize Northwest expressed their interest in getting systems now. Rahr even had a site assessment done on her house during the party. This final wrap up had all the energy and community building we'd been expecting the Solarize project to bring to the Northwest neighborhoods.

For more information on the program, visit the Solarize Northwest and Solarize Portland websites.
