Activist e-News
November 2011 |
Greetings Neighbors,
If forecasters are correct, Portland may have seen its first snow of the season already. Some predictions foresee a hard winter for the northwest, so prepare yourself. See below for tips on winterizing, plus information about seasonal food drives, events, and other community involvement opportunities. |
NINA 4th Annual Food Drive for NWPM
Beginning the week of November 21, the Northwest Industrial Neighborhood Association will be distributing donation barrels to local businesses to collect canned goods and other food items for Northwest Portland Ministries. NINA can also accept cash donations from businesses and individuals. This year NWPM has received a $15,000 challenge matching grant from the Collins foundation for any new or increased donations, so any extra giving will go even further and help offset federal cuts to their main source of food, the Oregon Food Bank.
Food items most needed include shelf stable milk, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meat, and cooking oils. Click here and here to see more needed items. Please check the NINA website later this month for the list of donation barrel sponsors. For information on barrel sponsorship, contact Barbara Macnab at 503 255-3387.

Readiness Tips for a Harsh Winter The National Weather Service advises Portland to be prepared for an early and wet winter. The biggest winter risks in Portland are floods, landslides, heavy rains and winter storms. What can you do? Sign up for emergency alerts at PublicAlerts.org. Maintain a basic emergency preparedness kit that includes raingear. Keep one kit at home, one in your car and another at work. For a list of emergency kit supplies visit Ready.gov.
Be cautious when driving. Carry chains and know how to use them. When going on long trips, look for hazards on Trip Check. Make sure your car is properly serviced with lights, battery and heat checked. Know alternate routes to work and your home just in case you come across floods while driving. Do not try to drive through flooded roads.
Prepare your house. Disconnect garden hoses and insulate outdoor spigots and pipes. Cover the windows in your home with plastic and curtains to save on heating bills. Bring outdoors animals inside; if they can't come in, make sure they have adequate shelter. Inspect your property and know where water drains. Prepare for Portland's winter weather and learn more at the Oregon Red Cross website.

Holiday Composting and Recycling Tips
This is our first holiday season with the new curbside food scrap program, so keep your compost pail handy while you do your holiday cooking. Here are some more tips from the Portland Bureau of Sustainability for recycling and reducing waste during your holiday festivities.
- Putting recycling and food scrap containers in plain sight helps guests easily see and use them.
- Invite your friends and family to bring along food containers so they can take home leftovers.
- Instead of using plastic platters and paper or plastic plates and cups, consider buying an inexpensive, reusable set of party dishes.
- Reduce garbage by preparing a dish out of local ingredients that you can buy without packaging, like apples, pears or hazelnuts.
Remember, bones and meat scraps are OK to include with compost, so you can toss that turkey carcass in there too. Natural wreaths and other plant-based holiday decorations can go in the green bin as well, although there is a fee for curbside recycling of whole trees. For more information on composting and recycling, visit the BPS website.

Help Build a West Side Tool Library
Tool libraries have popped up around town in North, NE, and SE Portland, but the west side of the river still lacks a lending resource for tools. This is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor and help develop an asset that builds community and fosters sustainability. From homeowners doing remodeling or yard work to renters looking to build space-saving shelves, everyone can benefit from a tool library. Are you interested in seeing a tool library in your area? Do you know of a great location that could house the tools? Do you have time to volunteer? Please contact Luke Callahan for more information.
