Solarize NW: Sign Up Deadline Is 3/31

March 31st is the deadline to sign up for Solarize Northwest. Signing up is not contractual - it just tells the contractor you are interested in having them come to your site and determine if solar is feasible for you. Solarize Northwest is also partnering with two great organizations to offer home energy savings to participants. You can sign up for Clean Energy Works, which allows you to pay for insulation and other efficient products through your utility bill. You can also choose to sign up for a Home Energy Review from Energy Trust to determine effective ways to save energy in your home. Solarize Northwest is a great opportunity to purchase solar electricity for your home. While it's true that the prices of solar are gradually decreasing, the incentives are expected to decrease as well, so the prices we're offering are likely better than they will be in ten years. We've also partnered with Umpqua Bank's Green Street Loan Program to help you finance the project in a way that will work for you. Sign up today at the Solarize Northwest website. There are still workshops available if you need more information before signing up, or need answers to specific questions.

NWDA Needs Your Help to Scrub Out Graffiti
Graffiti is an epidemic problem in the Northwest District. From the large spray painted "tags" on NW 23rd to the stickers affixed to sign poles on residential streets, no block has been spared. The Safety and Livability Committee of the NWDA is forming a group to conquer the problem. Now is the time to get involved. Visit the NWDA website for more information. Contact Mary Ann Pastene to join the effort.

Pearl District's "Graffiti-Free Zone: 97209"
With help from a graffiti abatement grant from NWNW and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, the Pearl District is now gearing up for a new phase of graffiti removal. The goal: a "Graffiti-Free Zone: 97209". The kick-off date will be March 30th, when Rogue Ales hosts a pizza party for all Graffiti Adopt-A-Blockers. The event will recognize past achievements, celebrate the grant, and help kick off the "97209" program for 2011. The grant made it possible to acquire new, better quality and more effective graffiti removal tools and supplies.
Graffiti Busters/Adopt-a-Block Charter Members should feel free to bring a guest and any other individuals who may be interested in joining the cause. Tools and supplies will be made available. For more information, email the Pearl District Livability Committee.

Help This Garden Thrive Under I-405

The Northwest Community Garden is looking for members! Located under I-405 at NW 16th, between the Pearl District and the Northwest District, this pocket green space is an unlikely oasis of beauty in urban surroundings. Members get the opportunity to design plots and maintain the garden, plus the satisfaction of getting their hands dirty while benefiting the community. The garden has been sponsored in part by the Zimmerman Community Center and the NWNW Small Grants program, and the $35 annual membership fee goes toward garden supplies. For more information, visit the NW Community Garden website, contact garden manager Matt Krueger, or call 503 221-4012.

Commissioner Encourages Public Involvement
Commissioner Amanda Fritz visited NW Portland at the March 9th Neighbors West-Northwest Board Meeting. She encouraged neighbors from the NWNW coalition area to engage with the City of Portland.
Fritz indicated that the City Budget is where critical decisions are made. If you are interested in the Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI), the Water Bureau, or Drug Free Zones, provide your volunteer advice within the budget process to affect change. The ONI budget hearings are tentatively scheduled for Monday, April 4th, 2:30 PM at City Hall, Council Chambers, 2nd Floor, 1221 SW 4th Avenue. Additional budget information can be found on the City's website. Come help us fill the room to demonstrate your support for neighborhood funds, like the neighborhood small grants program and communications funds. Even though there won't be an opportunity to speak, your presence makes a big difference. For details of Commissioner Fritz's conversation with NWNW neighbors, including information about the new Office of Equity and the possible downtown consolidation of the Crime Prevention Coordinators offices, visit the NWNW News online. If you're interested in adding your voice or getting involved, contact Commissioner Amanda Fritz, or contact her office at 503 823-3008.
