Activist e-News
November 2010 |
Greetings Neighbors,
The holidays are just around the corner! It's time again for some holiday traditions, like ZooLights and community food drives. And it's time for another type of seasonal event - the city's Northwest Clean Sweep winter street cleaning program. There have been some important changes this year, so check out the article below, and visit our website for more information. |
|
NW Clean Sweep & Leaf Removal Update
The winter 2010 NW Clean Sweep and Leaf Removal programs are starting, and will affect residents in NW Clean Sweep Zones 1-5 and the Hillside Leaf District. Neighborhoods impacted by these programs include Arlington Heights, Goose Hollow, Hillside and the Northwest District. Leaf removal in these areas is scheduled to begin December 1. This year, the city has instituted a fee for this service. The fee for residents in single-family homes is $15 in Leaf Districts; $30 in NW Clean Sweep Zones; and $65 for multi-family or commercial properties in either program. For more about the leaf removal program, maps of the leaf removal areas, or to find out if you qualify to opt out of paying the fee, visit our website or the City's leaf removal page. NW Clean Sweep and Leaf Removal are City of Portland programs, and Neighbors West-Northwest is providing this information as a courtesy.

Town Hall Meeting on Portland Reservoirs
The City Water Bureau has been working on a plan to replace open reservoirs to comply with federal water treatment and safety regulations. Microbiologist Scott Fernandez will present evidence that decommissioning our open reservoirs and building new underground reservoirs is unnecessary and will actually harm the quality and safety of our water supply, as well as costing about $1 billion.
Date: Saturday December 20, 2010 Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Location: First Unitarian Church, 1034 SW 13th Ave

Sylvan-Highlands ZooLights Food Drive
Sylvan-Highlands and Arlington neighbors will be celebrating the season at a special exhibition of the ZooLights, with a canned food drive and holiday cookie exchange. Residents can bring favorite batch of homemade (or store bought) cookies to share and a canned or packaged food item to donate to the Oregon Food Bank. Zoo entrance is free for Sylvan-Highlands residents and guests, as well as neighbors from the Arlington Heights Neighborhood Association. Arrive early for best parking, or take the MAX. Visit the Sylvan-Highlands website for more information and to RSVP.
Date: Wednesday December 8, 2010 Time: 6:30 PM Location: Oregon Zoo, 4001 SW Canyon Road

Street Stories Film Fest at Cinema 21
The Empowered Voices Media Project, a collaboration between Sisters of the Road and Portland Community Media, is bringing the Street Stories Film Festival to Cinema 21. These short films highlight the day-to-day struggles of people in Portland experiencing homelessness, isolation, and extreme poverty.
Using personal narratives, these stories - like one woman's quest for a functioning and clean public bathroom in downtown, or another person's attempts to stay afloat as an immigrant looking for a job - contextualize the larger goals of social, environmental, and economic justice movements. The films can be hard to watch, informative, uplifting, heart-felt and, in some cases, humorous, but they are always genuine and provocative.
The Empowered Voices Media Project received funding from Neighbors West-Northwest's Neighborhood Small Grants Program.
Date: Saturday December 11, 2010 Time: 12:00 - 2:00 PM Location: Cinema 21, 616 Northwest 21st Ave |

Holiday Crime Prevention Tips
The holiday season is always a special time of year. It's also a time when we can get busy, distracted, and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crimes. The Portland Police Bureau and City of Portland's Crime Prevention Program has some tips to help you make your season safe, secure and crime free.
When holiday shopping, lock purchases in your trunk, rather than leaving them inside the car.
Large displays of gifts should not be visible from the windows or doors of your home.
Stay alert to your surroundings, even when rushing around and thinking of other things.
For more tips, see the PCCP's Holiday Safety Tips flier.

Moving Forward With Solarize Northwest
O ur Requests for Proposals Committee had their first meeting on Tuesday, and the contractor selection will happen by January 2011. The next step is to get the word out about the Solarize Program and recruit volunteers to help with the process. We need co-chairs of the outreach committee to help plan workshops about the program, plus people to distribute program flyers throughout their neighborhoods and spread the word orally and through the web. If you can help in any of these ways, please contact Alison Wallisch at alison@nwnw.org or 503 823-4265. We will be releasing the Solarize website soon, so keep an eye on this e-newsletter for more detailed information.
