Community Meeting on Earthquake Preparedness

Cascadia Subduction ZonePortland might not seem like earthquake country, but we're positioned on the edge of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, an offshore faultline projected to generate a quake of 9.0 magnitude -  possibly soon. Find out what could happen and what you can do to be ready.

James Roddey of the Oregon Department of Geology will discuss the potential impact of an earthquake of this magnitude, focusing on issues such as the stability of the West Hills, how an earthquake could damage the tank farms along St. Helens Road, and the impact of an earthquake on Portland's infrastructure. City and county emergency preparedness offices will share info on how to put together an earthquake kit, what to do when the ground starts shaking, and what government resources will be available in the aftermath of a major earthquake.

Date: Monday, September 20
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Location: Chapman Elementary School Auditorium, 1445 NW 26th Avenue

CPTED Evaluations for Safer Spaces

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) studies ways to design physical spaces to reduce undesired behavior and crime.  It can be used when developing new areas, reviewing plans, or revising existing space.  CPTED is helpful with large projects such as multi-unit housing, transit systems, parks, business centers and shopping centers, as well as single family homes and offices. The Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement offers free CPTED evaluations by Crime Prevention Coordinators. For more information about crime prevention and the CPTED click here or contact Frank Silva, 503-823-4257.
City Adopts Public Involvement Principles

Earlier this month, Portland City Council unanimously adopted principles to guide the City's public involvement processes. The principles, which are designed to explain what the public can expect from City government, include partnership, early involvement, building relationships and community capacity, inclusiveness and equity, good quality process design and implementation, transparency, and accountability. Mayor Sam Adams commented that the principles would "allow for a higher quality and more consistent level of public outreach." The Public Involvement Advisory Council submitted the principles to City Council as a first step in a series of recommendations that are being developed to improve citywide public involvement. You can view the Public Involvement Principles here.
