 July 2010
Dear Neighbor,

Greetings! Summer is finally in effect. It's time for outdoor activities, and there's plenty planned for the weeks ahead. Check  here to learn about National Night Out events, and kick back on balmy evenings with the Summer Concerts in the Park Series and other free events. Besides fun in the sun, the nicer weather also offers the opportunity to get out for  neighborhood clean-up projects like litter pick-ups and graffiti removal. Whether you're working or playing in the great outdoors, enjoy the sunshine!
Take to the Streets for National Night Out

Neighborhoods are gearing up for National Night Out, a community event celebrated across the United States and Canada every year on the first Tuesday in August. The goal of these block parties and other gatherings is to promote crime and drug prevention by getting to know your neighbors. There's still time to register your free event by July 27, which qualifies you for city benefits such as free of charge street closures, reserved public park space and noise variances, and the opportunity to invite neighborhood law enforcement officers and firefighters to attend. While August 3 is this year's official NNO, events are scheduled before and after that date. Visit ONI's NNO page for more information. Contact coalition staff for resources to help you plan your event, or give us a call at 503-823-4288 to learn how we can help.

Pearl Volunteers Scrub Out Vandalism

Graffiti BustersPearl Graffiti Busters volunteers have cleared the area's five major Avenues of graffiti tags! On June 10, 60 youth and adult volunteers traversed Portland Streetcar thoroughfares on 10th and 11th Avenues from Jamison Square Park south to Burnside.  On July 13, more than 78 volunteers swept through the heavily trafficked 12th, 13th, and 14th Avenues in collaboration with the City of Portland's Graffiti Abatement Program contractors. Afterwards, volunteers were treated to a complimentary lunch at Rogue Ales Public House and Noodles & Company.

Starting in August, the next step in Pearl graffiti abatement  will be an "Adopt-A-Block" program, which partners with organizations who have supported previous clean ups.

If you would like to help Graffiti Busters continue their success story by volunteering or becoming an Adopt-A-Block sponsor, email Jan Valentine or call 503-715-2822.
