 June 2010
Dear Neighbor,

Greetings! The sun is out and so are the people.  What better way to meet your neighbors than by hosting a block party?  Block parties are great community building activities that are easily scalable to fit any neighborhood.  You can host a block party and invite the entire neighborhood or a small subset.  Read ONI's information about block party guidelines here. Contact NWNW with questions or to request a block party application.
Pearl District Cuts Waste With Durable Dishes

Dinner plate and utensilsThe Pearl District was recently awarded a small grant from Portland Recycles! to purchase durable dishes for use at neighborhood events.  Four hundred reusable plates, cups, forks, and spoons were purchased with the goal of reducing waste at all future Pearl District events.  These dishes will also be available for use by other community organizations.  If you are planning an event in July or later you may be able to use these dishes. Contact Alison at NWNW for information about reserving them.

Get Ready for National Night Out

National Night Out is a community event celebrated across the United States and Canada on the first Tuesday in August every year. On this day, neighbors enjoy parties and get-togethers with the people on their blocks and in their neighborhoods. The purpose of these gatherings is to promote crime and drug prevention by getting to know your neighbors.

This year's National Night Out is scheduled for August 3rd, but parties held between July 30th and August 8 can be registered as official NNO events. Registered events qualify for special benefits from the city, such as street closures free of charge, reserved public park space and noise variances, plus the opportunity to invite neighborhood law enforcement officers and firefighters to attend. The deadline for registering your free event is July 27th.  Learn more about National Night Out here.
Thank you for reading our June e-Newsletter. Please pass it on to others that may be interested, or encourage them to sign up.
