Downtown Tempe takes a 'Walk Through History'

Saturday, February 4, 2012, 9 am to 12 pm

On February 4th, the esteemed historical walking tours of Tempe will re-commence in the Mill Avenue District, giving insight to the city's history. The Tempe Historic Preservation Foundation has resurrected the tours with a fresh feel recruiting expert guides and taking on three varied paths that cover ASU, Hayden Butte & Tempe Town Lake, and Mill Avenue itself.

Each of the tours visits twelve or more landmarks vital to the history of Tempe including the Hayden Flour Mill, 'A' Mountain, the Ash Avenue Bridge, and Governor Moeur's House. Every tour has a personal feel with only one guide per ten to fifteen people in order to maximize the information shared and also leave time for questions. The guides hold great pride in their community, so all who tour are likely to hear some very interesting and valuable stories on their trek through Downtown Tempe. Also, the two hour window for the walk is the perfect length for those with a curiosity for the history to indulge their interest and learn some great facts about the city.

The day will begin at 9 am with a send-off from Mayor Hallman at the Hackett House just west of Mill Avenue. After a shotgun start, the tours will continue throughout the day each ending at Monti's La Casa Vieja. With a donation of $25, all registrants will receive a t-shirt commemorating the event, continental breakfast, and lunch at Monti's. Don't miss your chance to walk through history in Downtown Tempe.

Railroad Quiet Zone a Positive for Residents
A new railroad quiet zone has been established in Downtown Tempe

Residents living near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks along Ash Avenue can breathe a sigh of relief. As of January 25th, a new railroad quiet zone has been established which prohibits the blaring of train horns in the area. This new ordinance will limit noise pollution making it a little easier to sleep at night.

The quiet zone extends more than three miles throughout Tempe and passes through the Mill Avenue District. Here, both sides of the tracks have housing in close proximity. Some of the residents that will directly benefit from this include those at West 6th, Hayden Square Condominiums, and the new Encore on Farmer as well as in the Riverside Sunset neighborhood.

This effort has been carefully coordinated between the City of Tempe, railroad administrators and other government agencies to insure pedestrian, vehicular and railroad safety. Under the new rule, the horn will only sound in the case of emergency such as a car or person on the tracks. The City of Tempe is hopeful that with the new installation of the zone, pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists will take note and be more aware of their surroundings.

For more information visit www.tempe.gov/tim or call 480-350-4311.

Mill Avenue Traffic Boxes Get a Facelift
Utility Boxes Along Mill Avenue Become Canvases

Perhaps you've noticed some new paintings in unusual places in Downtown Tempe.  Six utility boxes along Mill Avenue have become canvases for the six local artists selected for the Mill Avenue Utility Box & Tempe Library Card Public Art Project. The project is a beautification effort initiated by the Downtown Tempe Community and the City of Tempe Public Art Program. Over the next few weeks, you are invited to come down and watch the artists work as they transform the beige boxes into works of art.

The artists and their selected boxes are:

  • Linda Parker at the south west corner of 7th Street & Mill
  • Dawn DeVries Sokol at the north west corner of 6th Street & Mill
  • Oliverio Balcells at the south west corner of 5th Street & Mill
  • Bud Heiss at the north west corner of 4th Street & Mill
  • Colton Brock at the north west corner of 3rd Street & Mill
  • Lucretia Torva at the north east corner of Rio Salado & Mill

In addition to the utility boxes, the artists' original designs will appear on the newest Tempe Public Library Cards.

Profile: Safe-T-Patrol Guides in the Lake District

The Mill Avenue District Safe-T-Patrol has two distinct teams at work on a daily basis in Downtown Tempe: Lake District Guides and Mill Avenue District Guides.  This month, we will be doing a special profile on our Lake District Guides focusing on their regular duties and how they can help you.

Lake Guides conduct routine patrols around Tempe Town Lake, on the north and south shores, from Priest to McClintock.  Guides are on duty at the lake seven days a week, from 9 am through 4:30 am.  Guides have been trained and work directly with the Tempe Police Department to help with the educational enforcement of park codes and city ordinances, while helping visitors and residents enjoy their time at Tempe Town Lake.

The primary goal of the guides is to add a visual presence in the park so patrons will feel safe during their leisure time.  The guides are available to answer questions and give recommendations on activities, restaurants, shopping and more.  Each guide is also responsible for a variety of other aspects of public safety around the lake.  Guides are trained to assist with homeless outreach by observing and reporting encampments.  The Safe-T-Patrol reports graffiti and vandalism while also providing a visual deterrent to nuisance crimes.
