FENCE JOINS WITH CLEMSON UNIVERSITY FOR NATURALIST TRAINING COURSE
As the first step in a planned expansion of our nature education curriculum, FENCE is joining forces with Clemson University's Master Naturalist Program, a thirteen-week field-based course to be headquartered at FENCE. The course provides an extensive working knowledge of geology, wildlife habitat and ecology, and sustainable habitat management. Certified Master Naturalists become "volunteer citizen scientists" who can positively impact the preservation of natural resources in North and South Carolina. The course, led by credentialed environmental scientists from Clemson's faculty and from the public sector, will meet at a variety of locations in the field once per week. Once completed, thirty hours of volunteer service per year are required to maintain certification. These volunteer hours may be spent at parks, museums, schools or nature centers such as FENCE. The Clemson Master Naturalist Program, details of which will be finalized this spring, will complement our signature Project F.E.N.C.E., reaching nearly nine-thousand elementary and middle school students a year in six counties. For more information about the Clemson program, visit www.clemson.edu/masternaturalist.

New Nature Education Display Area
So visitors and students have better access to our natural history and animal exhibits, we've created a new display area and Animal Room on the main floor of the FENCE Center. The breezeway now houses our extensive mineral collection, and former office space just off the breezeway has been converted into a new Animal Room, home to Butter the bunny, Rex the chameleon, and other residents. Both the mineral display and the Animal Room were previously housed on the building's lower level. You're invited to an open house inaugurating the new space on March 24th, from 6-8pm.

Build A Backyard Wildlife Habitat
The National Wildlife Federation has increased its promotional efforts for its Backyard Wildlife Habitat program, intended to help counter the effects of suburban development and non-sustainable gardening practices. The program certified homeowners who offer friendly environments for small mammals, birds, butterflies and reptiles by asking homeowners to raise native trees and plants to provide food and shelter for animals. Guidelines are also offered for sustainable gardening practices that use less water, and for simple rain collection systems to further reduce the load on local water tables. Certification does not have to apply to your entire property. For information, visit the NWF website's Backyard Wildlife Habitat section. |
A Quarter Century
This year, FENCE celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary of community service in nature education and outdoor recreation. Since opening its doors in 1984, FENCE has grown from its original 117 acres to its present 384, and recently protected those acres for future generations by conveying a conservation easement to our sister organization, the Pacolet Area Conservancy. Also in 2008, we completed an extensive remediation of Blockhouse Creek, began the initial stages of a water retention system to recapture rainwater runoff, won Premier Accredited Center status for our six-year-old Therapeutic Riding of Tryon (TROT), and added a new covered arena for equestrian exhibitors and for communtiy events. Much of this progress was accomplished with the help of volunteers who contributed over 3,400 hours last year to our mission and activities. But new challenges in an increasingly difficult economic environment await. Won't you help with a tax-deductible contribution? Click the link at left of our partner Network for Good to make a secure online contribution, or visit our website's donation page to complete our donation form and mail it to us. With your help, we can look forward to another twenty-five years of service.
