How Smart Pak Equine Began

by Rebecca Minard

SmartPaks were born of necessity. Feeding supplements was a disaster at our boarding barn. I have a TB/QH cross who needs daily vitamin E, joint supplement and a 1,250 lb dose of daily wormer. I assumed he was generally getting his supplements. Then I noticed that the vitamin E had lasted months longer than it should have. It's a white powder so I checked his feed tub (pre-made for the next morning) to see if it was in there. Nothing. No trace of white powder. The joint supplement was there, but it was hard to tell if it was one or two scoops. He did have a hefty dose of his daily wormer in there - maybe that would explain why I was going through it twice as fast as I thought I should be!

Now it's hard to blame the barn staff, since they have to feed 35 horses with an average of 3 supplements per horse. That works out to 105 supplements to be opened, measured, fed and resealed. What a headache for them.

We wondered if others had the same problem so we went out and talked to boarders, owners and managers at other barns. All sorts of other barns: big show barns, small private barns, lesson barns and back yard barns. They had many of the same problems. In a few cases we found some moldy supplements or contaminated supplements (mouse droppings!). We found many outdated supplements (usually in those gigantic containers).

The most consistent thing we found was that most of the feed rooms we visited had containers that had not been resealed after each use. Some were even left entirely open! Since then we have learned from manufacturers that oxygen, moisture and sunlight are devastating to the potency of many supplements. Money down the drain!

SmartPak was born!

Now I know my horse gets what I want him to get each and every feeding. Each SmartPak has his name on it so even the weekend feeder gets it right every time. I never have to worry about running out of supplements. My supplements are as fresh and potent as possible. I can easily pack his SmartPaks when we go away for a show. My barn manager is ecstatic and the best part is, I don't pay any more than I used to when I bought my supplements at the tack store. Click here to read an article that appeared in Dressage Today about how SmartPak came to be.

SmartPak Equine was founded by riders and horse owners. Between us we ride and show Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Polo, Equitation, Eventing, Reining and have logged many miles trail riding. Professionally, we have been barn managers, bankers, venture capitalists, health care marketers and a research scientist. And we are all concerned about the environment.

Melanie Cerny was born in Vienna, Austria and competed up to M level show jumping and dressage before coming to the United States in 1989.
She owns and operates Around the Bend Farm on the North Shore of Massachusetts and Wellington, Florida. Melanie takes horses in training and imports Dressage horses from Germany for her clients.  She is a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist and is currently training and showing  Dante MC, whom she owns in partnership with  Kathy Putman, at Prix St. George.

Gerrit-Claes Bierenbroodspot was an instructor at the Dutch Instructor School at Deurne for 16 years and the  Head Instructor for  the graduating classes during the last 7 years. Prior to this, he was the  trainer and chef d'equip of the Dutch National Jr/YR 3-Day Event Team. He has over  35 years of experience in teaching, from training level through Grand  Prix.

His experience in the saddle includes dressage, show jumping, and  eventing in which he rode internationally. His dressage clinics in the United  States and Europe are extremely popular and fill quickly without public announcement or promotion.

Gerrit Claes' unique dressage method is founded upon the use of the natural desire of the horse to move forward.  His technique involves teaching the rider how to follow this desire to move without using aids that restrict the horse's momentum.  In this way the rider helps to balance the horse through forward energy which in turn creates more impulsion. This increases balance and ultimately helps the horse to express their gaits; it allows them to easily obey the rider's aids thus creating a partnership based on mutual trust.

A clinic featuring Claes and Gary Smith will take place at Bear Spot Farm in Concord, MA immediately following the CADI and
Freestyle 2009...Serious Fun. Entitled: Bringing Natural Horsemanship to Dressage: From Training Level to the Grand Prix, the clinic is designed to assist in the training of young or difficult horses. For more information or to reserve a spot contact Jane Karol at jane@watermill.com

The clinic will take place on Monday October 5 and Tuesday October 6.
