Even with recent heavy rains, California's reservoirs remain at historically low levels. Though mandatory water ration programs have not been put into effect in most Bay Area counties, proactively saving water is still a good idea to avoid such programs, as well as lower your investment properties' monthly operating costs.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has developed a new program to educate San Francisco renters on wasteful water practices. Since most property owners pay for water their tenants use, it is up to us to educate and monitor our tenants, since they don't feel the fiscal impact of their water waste the way property owners do.
The free Water Wise Tenant kits are a tool for property owners and managers to inform residents on water conservation practices.
Each Water-Wise Tenant Kit includes:
· Educational materials on water wise practices for the kitchen, bathroom and property grounds.
· Information on how to identify and report wasteful plumbing and landscape leaks.
· Household water-saving tools such as the plumbing handbook, dye tablets, reuseable canvas bag and sponge printed with a useful conservation message.
During your Water-Wise Evaluation, the SFPUC technician will:
· Review consumption history of each water account.
· Check toilets for leaks and determine flush volume.
· Determine flow rates of showerheads and faucets.
· Provide FREE water-saving devices and materials, as needed, while supplies last.
· Provide recommendations for efficient outdoor water use.
· Teach customers to read their meters.
· Recommend plumbing fixture upgrades and other efficiency improvements.
· Provide information on rebates for which customers are eligible.
· Provide a report of all findings including recommendations and potential savings.
NOTE:Water-Wise Tenant Kits are available only to multi-family account holders. If your property is a condo or single-family home, you will not be eligible for the Water-Wise Tenant kit, but you can still receive a Water-Wise Evaluation during which a water conservation technician will visit your site and provide a comprehensive review of your water usage and provide a report with water saving recommendations.
