Dear Rental Property Owners:
Did You Know?
"Going Green" is a popular term these days. However, "going green" doesn't have to mean "going broke." There are some simple changes you can make when you have to replace old, worn-out systems, that can lessen your long-term impact on the environment as well as your wallet.
- Buy CFL light bulbs for all common areas. Use motion sensors and timers to avoid unnecessary power use.
- Replace traditional water heaters with "tankless" water heaters, which heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. Therefore, they avoid the standby heat losses assocated with storage water heaters.
- When replacing windows, opt for double-pane models that provide more insulation against energy loss and sound.
- When replacing appliances, look for ones displaying the Energy Star logo. PG&E provides rebates for most appliance replacements.
- Buy dual-flush toilets, which provide a small flush for liquid waste and a big flush for solid waste, using only as much water as you need each time you flush, but avoiding the common clogs associated with low-flow toilets.
