Cows of the Month

AmericaWe are marking the month of the USA's birthday with two cows of the month. The first is America. She was born on July 8, 2008, so she will turn 4 this month. She has had 1 bull and 1 heifer and is due with her third calf July 30. America has produced 39,071 pounds of milk in her lifetime, which is slightly above average. The unique thing about her is she is polled, which means she was born without horns. Half of her offspring will be born without horns, too.

 liberty

Our second July Cow of the Month is Liberty, born Nov. 10, 2006. She's had three heifers and one bull. At 5 years old she has produced 78,274 pounds of milk and is on track to reach the 100,000 mark. She averages 100 pounds a day right now!

These two cows are looking forward to the Fourth of July!

Recipe Compilation
The 2012 Summer Recipe Compilation will be out soon! Thanks to everyone who submitted recipes. Look for the compilation as a separate Hansen's newsletter in your email inbox soon.

Cash Cow
CA$H COW

We're still waiting for some big CA$H COW winners! In July, we will mark 10 jugs with $100 each (look inside the jug at your label when it's empty). Since we mark them at the beginning of the month, your best chance to find a large prize is in the next few days!

Remember, there are still 10 jugs EVERY WEEK marked with a $5.00 prize, so keep your eyes open! View details here on our website.

There were several $5 winners in late May and June: Johanna Foster, Alice Gabel, and Andrew and Cindy Cheatham, all of Cedar Falls; and Sue Yuska, Deb Wynthein and another customer, all from Waterloo.

Mark your calendars!

Meet the Hansens!

Each month we will feature one of the Hansen family members who make the business a success. This month we meet Jay Hansen.

Birthday and Age: Sept. 28, 1949, 62 years old

Favorite ice cream flavor: Vanilla

Role at Hansen's Dairy: I'm in the process of retiring. I'm kind of the "go-to" guy. When there's a problem or someone needs advice, they come see me. Right now I've been busy doing the construction work on the new tour center. And I take care of the grandkids.

What is a typical day like? Lately, I get up about 6 and work until about 9 p.m. On a typical day, I'll be making hay, repairing things and working on the new building. After the tour center's grand opening on June 30, I'll start cutting back a bit to 8 or 10 hours a day.

Family and life: I live on the farm in Hudson with Jeanne. In my free time, I like to play racquetball, work on the car, play with the grandkids, and go fishing. For future aspirations, I'd like to run for the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors in two years.

Customer of the Month

Thanks to all of our Outlet and Moo Roo customers who submitted entries for the July Customer of the Month! If chosen to be in the newsletter, you will receive a $5 gift certificate and a Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy vehicle decal.
This month's winner is ...
Jean Simmet of Cedar Falls.

What is Jean's favorite Hansen's product? "I like the milk, the ice cream, the butter and the cheese curds. I use the milk and butter for all my dairy needs."

Why does Jean shop at Hansen's? "They have superior products, the best employees, and I love their local location!"

Thanks Jean!

It's Pork-Tastic!

Our stores are now carrying a wide range of local pork products from Beeler's and Niman Ranch! These two companies are recognized for having exceptional, all-natural pork. Come in and pick some up today! Everything from tenderloins and chops to dogs and polish sausage is available.

Beeler's, in Madison County, Iowa, has two priorities: taking good care of their pigs and providing exceptional products to customers. They have developed their own method of raising pork - the Heluka method. Beeler's does not use farrowing or gestation crates - sows give birth in bedded maternity rooms and are free to roam. Piglets romp in open bedded and outdoor areas. The pigs are antibiotic- and growth hormone-free and are fed a vegetarian diet. Their products are minimally processed, with no nitrates or nitrites, and are gluten free.

Niman Ranch is a network of family farmers and ranchers - more than 700. It was introduced in Iowa in 1995, and most of their pork we carry comes from Niman Ranch farms in our state. Environmental stewardship comes first. Niman Ranch is committed to animal husbandry and taking good care of the land. Niman Ranch pigs are raised outdoors or in deeply bedded pens. They are fed an all-vegetarian diet, no antibiotics or hormones, have access to fresh, clean water, and are raised in a social environment!

Hudson Days

Hudson DaysCome visit us in the city park for Hudson Hometown Days 2012! On Saturday, July 21, Hansen's Dairy will be in the parade (10 a.m.), then in the park with ice cream treats. Join in the fun with us - there will be food, trolley rides, carnival games, and a petting zoo!

Open House = Home Run!!

Open houseOn Saturday, June 30, we hosted an open house at our newly opened tour center, 8461 Lincoln Road, next to the farm in Hudson.

We had an AMAZING turnout - we estimated about 350 people! Thank you to everyone who came out. It was great to see you, talk to you, and show you around. Check out our blog and our Facebook page for photos of the event.

Congrats to the door prize winners: Adri Lang of Denver, Scott Peters of Cedar Falls and Oliver Egland of Waterloo. They each win a Hansen's insulated bag filled with Hansen's milk, butter, cheese curds and ice cream.

You are always welcome to visit us out at the farm! It's a short 15-minute drive from Cedar Falls and Waterloo, and we'd love to see you. Come see the domes, enjoy some ice cream, and tour the farm. For tours, call (319) 939-2187.

Cooking with Hansens
If you're looking for a super easy dessert that can feed and please a crowd, look no further! This icebox cake doesn't need an oven and you can change it up with different flavors and toppings.

Graham Icebox Cake

Ingredients
1 box graham crackers
2 regular size boxes vanilla pudding, prepared with
    Hansen's whole milk
1 cup Hansen's heavy cream, whipped
Fresh berries (to garnish the top)

Directions
Prepare the pudding according to the package directions. If using the "cook 'n serve" variety, make sure to cool it completely before moving on to the next step!

Fold about two-thirds of the whipped cream into the pudding, and reserve the rest of the whipped cream. Place a single layer of graham crackers at the bottom of an 8x8 square casserole or baking dish. Spread half of the pudding mixture onto the layer of graham crackers with a rubber spatula. Place another single layer of graham crackers on top of the pudding. Spread the last half of the pudding mixture on top. Place another layer of graham crackers over this, and spread the last of the whipped cream on top. Cover and refrigerate for 2 or 3 hours. Top with fresh berries when ready to serve.

To double the recipe, just double the ingredients and use a 9x13 pan.

Variations
  • Put berries or banana slices between the layers of pudding and graham crackers.
  • Top everything with a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
  • Instead of 2 boxes vanilla pudding, use 1 box coconut and 1 box vanilla or 1 box lemon and 1 box vanilla.
  • Try chocolate pudding instead of vanilla and top with dark chocolate chips and raspberries.
  • Use 1 box chocolate pudding and 1 box cookies 'n cream, then top with crumbled Oreos.
