I recently read and article  that included a quote from Dr. Andrew Weil with which I completely agree.  He said:

"If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly."

Think about that... he didn't recommend a particular exercise, or diet, or even attitude.  He singled out proper breathing. 

Of course, the things I mentioned are all important components of healthy living; however if he had to choose just one, he singled out PROPER BREATHING!

Why is that?  We don't think much about breathing, because let's face it... we don't have to!  But the truth of the matter is that our breath is an extremely powerful tool in regulating our energetic bodies.

Most people today have turned into shallow breathers, meaning we don't bring enough air into their lungs.  In the simplest of terms, let's think about how this affects us.

As we breathe in, we oxygenate every cell of our bodies.  The less oxygen we bring in, the less is available to our cells leading to sub-par performance of our organs, etc.  

Not only that, but as we breathe out, we remove "stale air" including carbon dioxide from our bodies -- shallow exhalations, do not remove enough of that "stale air" which remains within us.

By simply focusing on our breath and learning to take deeper, steadier breaths, we take the first steps to not only improving our physical functioning, but also our mental clarity and steadiness.

So here's my challenge to you if you don't already have a deep breathing practice..... designate a set time (early in AM or right before you go to bed are good times) and spend just 2-5 minutes focusing on your breath and trying some gentle deep breathing.

If you need some guidance, feel free to use the "Deep Breathing Meditation" on my Archives & Media page.  Do this every day and I guarantee that in just a few weeks you will feel a difference, and you will want to continue with this practice on your own!
