Greetings!
I recently attended a talk given by one of my favorite gurus (spiritual teachers) in which he made this statement... "Don't do something, just SIT there!" He was creating a play on words of the familiar saying "Don't just sit there, DO something!"
I found his reversal of words and it's ensuing meaning (which he so eloquently explained) to be quite profound. We are such an action-oriented society... "movers & shakers" & multi-tasking fiends! I believe much of this attitude comes from our desire for immediate results and the feeling that if we are not "doing", we are not productive.
But by focusing so heavily on action, we have forgotten a very important prerequisite to the action - contemplation. How many times do we find ourselves, acting without properly thinking something through? Or saying something which we later regret because we didn't think before we spoke?
It's so easy to get caught up in "do this" and "do that" when sometimes we should simply DO NOTHING. Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not advocating being a couch potato or sitting there like a bump on a log! :)
But what I am suggesting is that we give ourselves (and not just our children), a regular "time out" before we "misbehave" through hasty or inappropriate actions. For us, our "time out" should be a time to quiet our minds so that we can reflect on important questions and decisions in our lives.
Only by giving ourselves permission to first reflect rather than immediately act, can we gain insight and clarity. It is in those moments of contemplation and reflection that we allow ourselves to shed our preconceptions, limiting beliefs and habitual thought patterns.
But how do we just sit and "do nothing"? One way is through yoga and meditation. When we practice yoga postures, we take time to "be with" our bodies. When we practice meditation, we take time to quiet our minds. And thus we are able to bring calm and clarity to our entire being.
I have been doing yoga for over 20 years and teaching for over 8 years - I can honestly say that each time I do my yoga and meditation practice, I learn something new.
If you are interested in learning more about yoga, please attend my FREE forum called Yoga Demystified! on May 5th in Alburtis, PA (see details below.) I guarantee that YOU will learn something new!
And in the mean time, give yourself a "time out" and DO NOTHING! :)
Be Well and Enjoy, Sheetal
