Greetings!

Peru!  (Well, I was in Peru.)  But now I'm back and I brought some of the Peruvian spirit with me.

I'll be honest, I didn't know what to expect of Peru... I had heard and read about the spiritual wonder of Machu Picchu, but I didn't know of much else.

Well, Machu Picchu did knock my socks off (hopefully you can get some sense of it from my yoga photos!)  But what really was fascinating to me was the genuine warmth of all the people we met and their contentment with life.

I began to ponder this concept of contentment.  In yoga, contentment is one of the self-disciplines (niyama) to be practiced in order to maintain a positive environment in which to grow.  We can simply define contentment as "having a state of satisfaction or ease of mind."

Think about the last time you really felt content - when was that?  Sometimes I feel we have forgotten how to feel content... we acquire something, but we want more... we complete a task, but we are still not happy because there's more to do... we try out best, but it's still not good enough.

In fact, I think many people feel that they should NOT feel content because they equate contentment with complacency.  But there is a distinct difference!  Complacency while involving a feeling self-satisfaction is also coupled with unawareness.  But when we are truly content, we are also very aware.

When we marry awareness with our desire to want more for ourselves, we can grow and improve without letting that desire extinguish our contentment.  And in that regard, I think we could take a lesson from the Peruvians.

Here's to your contentment!
