European Commission approval of new indication for Roche's Pegasys offers hepatitis C patients a second chance for a cure. Pegasys is the first and only pegylated interferon to be approved for treatment of up to 72 weeks in treatment-experienced patients. Roche announced today that the European Commission has approved Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a [40 KD]) plus Copegus (ribavirin) for the retreatment of hepatitis C patients who were not successfully treated with an initial course of interferon alpha (pegylated or non-pegylated), either alone or in combination with ribavirin. Although exciting advances in the treatment of hepatitis C have been made in recent years, a significant number of patients do not achieve treatment success (sustained virological response [SVR], widely equated to cure1) with their first treatment. This results in a large and growing population of patients who urgently need alternative treatment solutions. Today's approval provides a significantly broader indication for Pegasys and establishes a new standard of care for treatment-experienced patients with the most difficult-to-treat virus.

| Volunteer Update - 2009 Health Fair Casting Call |
| As we enter into a new year Hep C Connection will depend heavily on volunteer assistance to reach others in the community. Each year Hep C Connection spends endless hours during the month of April reaching thousands of Coloradoans at Health 9 Fairs. This year we need you! If you have a free day during the week or time to spare on the weekends, your volunteer time would be greatly appreciated. Time and dates for many fairs are still to be determined, however if you are interested in helping spread the word, please contact Kara Armstrong at karmstrong@hepc-connection.org or by phone at (720) 917 3972. She will be happy to add you to her Health Fair outreach list. Being on this list offers you to receive updates and announcements to health fair opportunities that you can consider donating a few hours to. Any necessary training will be provided at no cost to you. |
| Have You Ever Tested For Hepatitis C, We Need Your Help |
Have you tested for hepatitis C in Colorado? If so, the health department needs our help. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is looking for people who have tested for hepatitis C and willing to share their personal experience. Personal scenarios might include; how the testing experience taught you ways to reduce your risk, or by testing, you learned that you are hep C positive and it helped you to make better everyday choices regarding your diet or maybe how to talk with your doctor. Another example might be you learned you don't have it, but discovered other community resources that can help you. Regardless, if you or a loved one has hepatitis C, each person is uniquely affected. Please consider enriching someone's life by sharing your personal experience. Individuals can share their story by using first name only or anonymously if preferred, whichever is most comfortable. If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact Stewart Thomas, Medical and Marketing Liaison with Hep C Connection at (720) 917-3970 or DeAnn Ryberg, Viral Hepatitis Coordinator, at State Health at (303) 692-2674. |
| Got Gift Cards |
|
Did you get a gift card this year that made you think "I'll never use this." Each year billions of dollars in gift cards are put in a drawer and never used. While economic times are hard and making financial donations has become difficult Hep C Connection has found a way to keep your donations coming. If you are one of the many who will be sticking a gift card in a drawer this season please consider putting it in an envelope and donating them to us instead. Gift card donations can be used for volunteer thank you's, testing incentives, and auction items each year for Hep C Connection.
Hep C Connection's mailing address is: 1325 S. Colorado Blvd. B-302
Denver, CO 80222. Thanks! |
