| Serve On The Board of Directors For Hep C Connection |
Do you have an interest in giving back to your community? If this sounds like you, Hep C Connection is accepting applications to serve on its Board of Directors. These critical volunteer positions help us reach our mission by planning, fundraising, and overseeing programs and the financial well-being of the organization. Board members serve for three-year terms with the possibility of being re-appointed to a second term. They attend Board meetings every other month at a central Denver location. In addition, our Board members are active participants in at least one committee, make donations that are personally meaningful to them, introduce new people to the organization, and raise funds through event ticket sales or corporate sponsorship requests. Board members use their professional expertise to guide us in many ways. Strategic planning, marketing, finance, and public health are just a few of the areas where we could use your expertise. Contact Ann Eckman-McDougal by phone at 303-620-5697 or by email at anneckman@rmpbs.org to express your interest and receive more information about this opportunity. Applications will be accepted through August 15, 2008, with terms beginning January 1, 2009. Help us develop awareness and educate about hepatitis C and support those who have the virus through our many programs.

New Abbott HCV Drug Starts Study The Antiviral Global Project Team is pleased to announce the initiation of our first clinical trial of ABT-333, a polymerase inhibitor being developed for use in treatment of HCV infection. This Phase I study, M10-351, will study the safety, tolerability, antiviral activity and pharmacokinetics of ABT-333 in healthy volunteers and HCV-infected subjects. The study synopsis has been posted on the global repository of on-going clinical trials: www.clinicaltrials.gov.
We are very excited to enter Clinical Development with our first compound for treatment of Hepatitis C, the fruit of several years of work by our Antiviral Discovery Team at Abbott. Additional compounds, targeting HCV polymerase, as well as several other targets are in preclinical development, and we hope these will also enter human trials in the near future. |

Austria, Silibinin was provided by ROTTAPHARM-MADAUS free of charge. AUTHOR SUMMARY: - iv. silibinin has potent antiviral activity against HCV. - This effect is dose dependent, and independent of peginterferon/ribavirin. - iv. silibinin was well tolerated. - oral administration of silymarin was ineffective. AUTHOR CONCLUSIONS: - iv. silibinin may be useful for treatment of nonresponders to peginterferon/ribavirin. - the optimal dose and duration of silibinin therapy remains to be studied. - Studies of the pharmacokinetics of silibinin are mandatory. - The mechanism of action is unknown. | National Viral Hepatitis Poster Contest Winner Shares Her Story |
Lindsey Crum from Denver, Colorado named Grand Prize Winner! The artwork submitted by Lyndsey Crum from Denver, CO was declared the grand prize winner, and the winners named in each of the three judging categories are: Therese Mushock from Atlanta, GA (winner in both the General Hepatitis Awareness category and the Hepatitis C awareness category) and Kayla Langhans from Colfax, WI (Hepatitis B awareness).
Read Lindsey's inspirational story that lead to the creative winning Poster:
"Working for the planned Colorado School of Public Health has opened many doors for me, professionally and creatively. Due to my communications role with the CSPH, I subscribe to several news feeds from various health related agencies and foundations. I learned about the national hepatitis poster contest from one of these headline emails. Immediately I was excited and wanted to submit a design in order to tell the story of my own connection to Hep C. After a few minutes of thinking about the poster contest, reading the rules, and visiting the CDC Hepatitis website, I knew exactly the design angle I would take - illustrating my personal connection to Hep C. Adding in my personal affinity for social networking and visual identification, I decided to play off the six-degrees game normally associated with actor Kevin Bacon. But I realized "degrees" was not enough, the connection needed to tell my story. The story is me and three members of my family. How is it that these four people are connected? They are connected because of me and the silent connector - Hep C. Without giving away names and relations, I wanted to illustrate this connection. I chose to use profile images rather than real pictures to indicate a level of anonymity and illustrate that the connector and connected can be anyone. In fact anyone and everyone could ask, "What are my degrees of Hep C." After designing the poster I showed it to my husband. One of the connected is on his side of the family and died due to liver complications caused by Hep C. My husband cried when he saw the poster and I knew immediately, "This is it; this is my design, my story, and 'my degrees of Hep C.'" The poster contest is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Division of Viral Hepatitis and the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR). Entries were received from the general public and asked for creative approaches to raise awareness about specific types of viral hepatitis. The winning posters will be distributed to CDC partner organizations and showcased on CDC's Web site. For any additional information about the National Viral Hepatitis Poster Contest, please contact the Poster Contest Director, Marcia Miller at (404) 718-8539 or mfv9@cdc.gov. | Hep C Connection Offers Testing at Motorcycle Rally |
Hep C Connection will be participating in the Ladies Run of Colorado in July! The Ladies Run is a motorcycle rally designed for female bikers (although men are allowed to participate, too!) that is celebrating its 22nd year of female camaraderie. The event starts in three different locations in the state - Colorado Springs, metro Denver, and Fort Collins - and then all riders meet up in Fairplay. The event will be held July 12th and 13th. The cost of the event is very reasonable for riders, only $13 for pre-registration or $15 the day of the event. The Ladies Run donates all proceeds to charity and Hep C Connection has been a recipient of funds in the past. This year Hep C Connection will have a booth in Fairplay on July 12th and will be offering free and confidential hepatitis C testing to individuals with risk factors. For more information visit http://www.ladiesrun.com/Home.html. Stop by our booth and say "hi" if you decide to join in the fun! |
| AIDS Walk Colorado 2008 - Join Our Team |
Saturday, September 6, 2008, thousands of people will come together in Denver for the 21st Annual Colorado AIDS Walk. The 5K walk/run will start at beautiful Cheesman Park and will take participants through the historic Capitol Hill area. The support received last year helped Colorado AIDS Project and the fundraising teams of more than 30 AIDS service and education providers in Colorado raise vital funds for the fight against HIV and AIDS. This year Hep C Connection is out to help again.
Thirty percent of HIV/AIDS patients are co-infected with Hepatitis C. The AIDS Walk plays a very important piece in the Hep C Connection mission. By joining forces with Colorado AIDS Project we are able to enjoy the benefits of a large campaign without incurring the costs of managing an event. Seventy percent of the funds we raise will go directly to Hep C Connection and the Co-Infection program.
Hep C Connection supporters can join the Hep C Connection Team to raise money and participate in the walk. Supporters who are not local or do not want to walk can also simply make donations.
To join the team, you can call Stewart Thomas at (720) 917-3970, or go to www.AIDSwalkcolorado.org, and select "Register" on the main page. You can choose to join a team or register individually. If you would like to join the Hep C Connection team, go to "Join a Team" and scroll to Hep C Connection on the team list. Stewart Thomas is registered as the Hep C Connection's Team Leader for this year's walk.
For supporters who would like to simply make a donation. Go to www.AIDSwalkcolorado.org, click on donate at the top of the main page and select team donation. From this page you can scroll to Hep C Connection and make a donation. If you are not comfortable making an online donation checks can be written to "AIDS WALK COLORADO". These checks can be mailed to Hep C Connection's office and will be delivered the day of the race.
Hep C Connection has many great supporters. We appreciate all the funds that we've received and hope that everyone will take the time to consider donating to this cause. We look forward to walking with those who can make it and will continue to keep everyone updated on our progress.
