Fueling Sorry For OPEC?

As prices drop like a rock can OPEC even stop it?  Do we all remember when crude hit it's high of $148/ barrel?   No one ever thought we would see what we have over the past 4 months.  The barrel fell below $60 just a couple of weeks after OPEC cut production by 1.5 million barrels a day.

Several OPEC countries, including Iran, one of the largest suppliers said they can't make money and reinvest into the infrastructure with those lower prices.  Do you feel bad for them?  I don't.  OPEC has now called for another meeting to cut production even further, this one is scheduled for December 17th.  OPEC  President Chakib Khelil said a reasonable price range should be somewhere between $70 and $90 per barrel.  Funny, I didn't hear him say that when it broke $100 per barrel and raced up to the $140 per barrel mark.  Was the 5 letter word on his and every other member's mind G-R-E-E-D ?

As the Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced earlier this month, U.S., usage will have its first fall in consumption since 1980. Yes, some of it we know has to do with the depressed economy that we are in.  Though our view is that the country stood up and took action only when the price got too high.  Companies enacted idling plans, reduced their speeds, paid closer attention to tire pressure and maintenance.  Individuals cut back on their driving, began to carpool and took public transportation. For all of our conservation efforts we now have reasonable fuel prices.
Greetings!

In this month's newsletter we address different ways to keep your company healthy.  Earlier this month I was in San Francisco at one of the largest oil industry events.  It's a great city with wonderful food, fabulous sights, diverse cultural influences and probably the best city in the country to observe the usage of alternative fuels. It is truly amazing that with all of the different modes of transportation there wasn't smoke or carbon emitting from them.

They utilizes buses that run on electricity, CNG,and bio-fuels to name just a few.  The taxi cabs use E-85 propane and almost all are equipped with GPS devices to get them to their destinations more efficiently, reducing their mileage and time idling in traffic. They have BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) for their subway system. At the airport they utilize a computerized electronic shuttle to transport travellers between terminals and rental car providers. Providing this shuttles dramatically reduces the number of buses that would be required to do the same service.  And of course, there are the world famous cable cars that make hiking across the city significantly easier.  In addition they also have fuel cell city cars and natural gas police cars.
This city is both clean and fun.

I applaud the San Francisco area and thank them for being progressive and providing cleaner air.

We appreciate everyone who took part in the survey two weeks ago and if you haven't had the opportunity to there is still time to fill it out until the end of the day.

Sincerely,

Fuel Is Cheap, Who Needs Maintenance?

You and your company does.

Just because you are not paying $5.00 per gallon for diesel does not mean that you shouldn't still be emphasizing the best practices that we became mindful of while the prices were high.

Here are 5 quick steps to keep things in check:

1.  Change oil filters before they become too dirty and start getting clogged.

2.  Change the oil and the filters when they are due,  This may not improve efficiency but it will help your engine maintain proper performance.

3.  Use synthetic oils and lubricants.  they offer a slight fuel efficiency by reducing friction.  More importantly they have extended service life and therefore less oil to recycle over the long-term.

4.  Air everywhere-

 a. Check tire pressure daily, for every 10lbs per sq. inch tire is below, you suffer .5% in fuel economy.

b.  Check the air intake system to make sure nothing is restricting air flow to the engine.

5.  Be sure to use the proper tires for the load.

Keep Your Company Healthy

We all know how difficult it is when anyone calls out sick.  We scramble to cover routes phones and workload.  The issues are only compounded when they are out for several days.

Flu season is here.

10% of Americans get the flu each year.  That is almost 300,000 people.  Out of those people, 200,000 will require hospitalization and sadly 36,000 people will die as a result of the flu and its complications.  This situation is real so let's try and stop it in it's tracks from effecting your company.  The best way to do this is by utilizing preventive maintenance for your staff.

Provide or encourage your employees to receive immunization.

Washing your hands- provide your employees with alcohol based lotions or gels to kill and disinfect germ before they can spread.

Keep your distance from anyone that has the flu. It is more contagious if you a within 3 feet of an infected person.

Tell your employees, "If you have the flu STAY HOME!!!!"

These tips along with basic common sense should help keep your office full of staff and your trucks rolling right through the winter.

Can GPS Really Help Your Company?

Q: Lately, we've heard quite a bit about how GPS technology helps fleet owners reduce fuel cost. What are some specific ways that GPS mapping and reporting can help?

A: It's important to be sure that the GPS solution you're evaluating offers an engine idling report. This report identifies vehicle operators who have exceeded company policy, relative to acceptable engine idle levels per day, and can be e-mailed to managers to take corrective actions when these instances occur. Immediately after implementing GPS, fleet owners have informed us that their idle times have decreased from hours per day to minutes per day per vehicle. Given the fact that most vehicles consume one half to a gallon of fuel for each hour of engine idling, there is potential for a significant amount of fuel to be wasted without a tool to regularly monitor idling time. Also, solutions which offer a "bread crumb trail" mapping feature, clearly illustrate the actual routes taken by mobile workers. This information can be used to improve route efficiency and eliminate unauthorized use of company vehicles. Finally, speeding can be monitored and e-mail alerts can be sent to management when predefined speeding thresholds are exceeded. These are all ways that GPS technology can significantly reduce fuel expense.

Q: How can GPS have a positive impact on labor costs?

A: GPS implementation leads to greater efficiency by enabling more direct routes from job to job, re-routing drivers stuck in traffic and eliminating unauthorized use of company vehicles. Recent studies have shown that GPS solutions reduce overtime pay by almost 10% over the course of a year.

Q: In a tight economy, how do companies justify an investment in GPS?

A: Many high quality GPS solutions cost less than $2 per day per vehicle, but return 3-4 times this in financial benefits. As the economy continues to slow down, many prudent fleet operators are seeking out ways to reduce all possible operational costs and gain a tool that provides real-time insight into their daily operations. Old ways of doing business do not work in today's difficult marketplace.

Q: Do you have any suggestions on eliminating the "big brother" objection sometimes associated with GPS tracking?

A: Yes, management has to provide a clear explanation as to the medley of benefits provided by GPS to their company and their mobile workers. GPS is an efficiency tool which can help the company save money on fuel, labor, maintenance and insurance costs, leading to greater profitability. A financially stronger company generally leads to greater security for the entire workforce. In terms of the mobile workers, management must point out that GPS will increase their safety while they're on the job. If an issue occurs, real-time location information can be used to locate the worker quickly. Also, disputes involving customer arrival and departure times can be eliminated utilizing GPS reporting, as well as false claims against the mobile worker.

Q: How is MMR different from other companies who provide GPS technology?

A: We take the necessary time to thoroughly understand our prospective customers' needs and objectives, and then recommend the right mobilitysolution. We've learned early on in our business that not one technology fits all needs.

Q: What types of companies benefit the most from your GPS solutions?

A: MMR has customers in a wide variety of vertical industries including service-based companies (HVAC, electricians, plumbers), construction, distribution, transportation, and state and local governments. The key here is that all of these entities were looking to improve efficiency, and reduce the costs of their mobile operations.

Q: If a company is in the early stage of evaluating the benefits of a GPS solution, how can the fleet owner see first hand how the software operates?

A: MMR provides online demonstrations requiring only an internet connection, a telephone and about 20 minutes of their time, with no need to leave the comfort of their office.
