More Record Highs

Crude, Diesel and Gas prices make a clean sweep.

$117.75 Crude
$4.143 Diesel
$3.50 Gas

It's Earth Day and all major petroleum products are setting new record highs.  Is Mother Earth trying to tell us something?

What's driving the prices up?

Everything!

                ·        Violence in the Nigerian region

·        OPEC ministers saying they are not going to raise output anytime soon.

·        Market fears

·        A continuing weak U.S. dollar

·        You name it; we have it going against us.

The U.S. Department of Energy predicts that diesel will hit $4.50 per gallon, nationwide, in the next couple of months.  Gas is supposed to peak at $3.60, but there are places in the country already paying that much.

It really is hard to believe that our newsletter, dated 3/3/08 had U.S. D.O.E. diesel at $3.658, on 3/31/08 it was $3.964 and on 4/21/08 it reached $ 4.143.

If only all of our retirement accounts went up by that same 13.2% over 49 days.

Controlling the Controllables

As we all know from the article above, fuel isn't getting any less expensive.  We've all heard the predictions, projections and prognostications about what is going to happen with diesel fuel prices.  We believe it's pretty clear that no one really knows.  Therefore, the only true things you can worry about are the things within your control.

How can your company control its fuel variables?

1.      Have a fuel program

2.      Price Insurance (Hedging)

3.      Review all pricing

4.      Monitor MPG

5.      Idle Policy

6.      Fuel Card Program - with solid controls

7.      Benchmark your costs for all deliveries

8.      Educate your drivers about fuel costs and what they need to do to reduce fuel usage

9.      Unless your managers, truly understand the fuel industry, don't let them manage the program

10.   Audit all fuel deliveries

Controlling the controllables is not a one-time solution.  It needs to be reviewed, monitored and followed up on.  If not, your company is probably leaving thousands of dollars on the table every month. Need help?

We want to thank everyone that took the recent survey we sent out.  Results for our contest will be issued in an upcoming newsletter.
