Greetings from Camp!
Thinking of summer camp brings back such great memories: playing games, meeting friends, and learning new skills in a group. If you have pain in your knee or hip that requires a joint replacement, you can relive the camp experience at Joint Camp!
Joint Camp at St. Francis is an award-winning program that is dedicated to the comprehensive care of hip and knee replacement patients. It combines extensive pre-operative education, outstanding patient care, and group-focused therapy in an environment created to enhance faster healing and recovery.
Once in Joint Camp, you'll take part in a comprehensive education class called "Prehab" that lets you know what to expect before, during and after surgery. Patients most often have better recoveries when they're more educated and prepared for the surgery experience.
At the hospital, you will meet a group of people who have just been through the same experience as you -- your fellow Joint Campers. You complete your physical therapy as a group -- and while therapy is hard work, it also includes games that rival summer camp, like putting competitions and even Wii Sports tournaments!
The focus of Joint Camp is on wellness: patients are encouraged to dress in their street clothes, walk and move around as soon as possible after surgery, and reminded that they are not sick, they are simply recovering from surgery and soon will feel better than ever.

Excellence in Hips
Summer weather often draws people out of their homes and into many activities. For the elderly, this can mean an increased chance of having a hip fracture. If someone in your family or in your neighborhood is at risk for a hip fracture, make sure they know about St. Francis' Geriatric Fracture Program.
This program is one of the first in the country to prioritize and streamline the care of hip fracture patients, in order to ensure the best possible outcomes. Unlike at other facilities, hip fractures at St. Francis receive priority care, often getting patients from the ER to surgery in less than half the time of most other facilities. Faster surgery means faster pain relief, which also leads to a decrease in delirium rates -- which are often found in patients who must wait days for surgery and be on narcotic pain medication.
After just one year of the program's implementation, it has been shown that 85% of patients in the program return home after the fracture (instead of a national average of 55%), the average length of the hospital stay has been cut in half, and the infection rate has dropped to 0%.
