Switch Your Focus for a Leaner 2009
by Rick Kattouf II, author of "Forever Fit"
A new year is upon us, and health and fitness goals tend to
dominate our wish list. Conventional thinking says that if one wants to
lose weight, cardiovascular exercise and calorie restriction is the key
to success. So, here we go: we start to run, get on the elliptical, and
take spinning classes. Now that we are in the groove, all we need to do
is reduce out caloric intake and the weight will just fall off.
In the first few weeks you notice a few pounds are gone, but
sooner than later, the weight loss is stagnant. It seems only right
then that we need to work out more and/or harder and definitely cut
calories even more. We then begin to skip meals because this will help
weight loss, right? We also begin to pick up the exercise intensity.
Reality quickly hits you and you realize things are just not working;
you are not losing weight, what is going on?
If this vicious cycle sounds familiar, it is time to switch our focus. Read more...

Snack Happy!
If you're trying to get more nutritious foods into your diet, snack time can be a challenge. It seems that many on-the-go foods are not so good for you. But, healthy snacks are important -- they can boost your metabolism and keep you from overeating at mealtime.
Here are some of our favorite picks for healthy snacks -- pick one up the next time you're at the supermarket:
- Hummus and veggies. Tribe Hummus now makes a convenient 2 oz. single serving that you can enjoy with cherry tomatoes, carrot chips or celery sticks.
- Fresh fruit. Winter is the perfect time to reach for citrus fruits that are loaded with healthy vitamins. Our favorite? Clementines! Not only are they delicious, but they're easy-to-peel, seedless, and only around 50 calories.
- Almonds. Full of fiber and healthy nutrients, almonds are a great choice when you want a crunchy snack. They are not a low-fat food, so be sure to watch your serving sizes.

Need Exercise Inspiration?
Isn't it ironic how fitness resolutions are usually made during the coldest time of the year? While the weather may not be cooperating with your fitness goals, you can still get a great workout in the comfort of your own temperature-controlled home.
St. Francis physical therapists have developed video demos of three essential exercises for women, to help you build strength and muscle tone. All you need are some comfortable clothes and hand weights: |
