Welcome back to the Target Zone:
As I write this July newsletter I am waiting to board a plane from St Louis back to Spokane. It appears this flight will actually be bringing me home to summer weather. I hope this is more than wishful thinking as I am ready for sunshine and not all those clouds and rain that I left behind last week. Summer is always exciting for so many reasons but this summer is particularly exciting for our CTS family.
We have big things planned as you will read about in more detail below. The biggest news we have is the transition from our normal Swap Meet event to a much more comprehensive celebration we are now calling our Summer Shooting Expo. We hope this will become an annual customer appreciation celebration.
For the first time we are offering a second Advanced Carbine class in the same year. This would not be possible without your continued support of our facility and programs. And don't forget if you've taken this class before, you can take it again for free, just call to get on the re-take list.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
As you will read below, we are trying to help the Northwest Blood bank, Post Falls Food Bank and Toys for Tots during our Shooting Expo on August 11th.
We feel confident that it will be a great day for everyone including those three very worthy causes. However, Peggy and I and the entire CTS staff are in need of your commitments to donate blood. We told the NBB that the shooting community would come together and provide the blood donations that are so desperately needed during this time of year. Please call ahead and sign up for an appointment to donate on the 11th. Their collection efforts at other venues have been challenging at best...Let's show them what the CTS family of shooters is capable of doing. After all, this is the only way we want you to donate blood at our facility.
***************************
Heads up...we will be closing early on Sunday Aug 19th for a staff function...hours will be 10am-2pm that day

We Buy Used Guns and will be happy to sell your gun on consignment for you. We try to keep a large selection of used guns on hand. But we are selling new and used guns as fast we can get them in. So the time has never been better for you to get cash out of that firearm that is just collecting dust.
It will cost you nothing to bring it in and get an idea on what value your firearm has. Just see Cam or Ken or Ed.

BOB FOSTER FOR SHERIFF
Many of you know how passionate I am about the Kootenai County Sheriff's department and how I feel about the need for new leadership within that organization. I have dedicated my life to training Law Enforcement officers around the world. I spent over 9 years as a Reserve Deputy in the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department. I am very concerned about the current state of our local Sheriff's Department.
The people of Kootenai County and the men and women who work for the Sheriff's Department all deserve an agency led by a progressive thinking, compassionate, experienced, and best qualified Sheriff possible. That is why Bob Foster is my choice for Sheriff. We cannot allow this vitally important agency within our community to continue to operate the way it has for so many years. Now is the time to elect a leader that will establish a Sheriff's Department that will be responsive to the community's needs, tough on crime, work within its budget all while providing a work environment where its employees will be proud to be a part of and ultimately serve this community like never before.
Over the next few weeks I will be more actively endorsing Bob and I would encourage you all to take the time to research and see if he is the right man for the job in your mind as well. It will be an uphill battle for sure. Bob dropped out of the Republican primary as he saw the writing on the wall with respect to the splitting of the votes. Bob is a republican who is running as an independent. I believe he is the best person for the job and I believe the voters of this county will recognize that as well and come Election Day we will make our voices heard by electing a conservative independent Sheriff.
Mark your Calendar for Bob Foster event on September 7th at Center Target Sports facility...More to follow.
Rumor has it that Bob will be at our Aug 11th Shooting extravaganza if you want to meet him sooner!

Due to your continued support of CTS, we've decided to continue with our Monday opening hours. They will remain Pam-7pm and we will be open on Labor Day.
*********************************
Don't forget to send Peggy your vacation or business photos showing your Center Target Sports logo shirt or hat. She's started posting them on the bulletin board to your left when you enter the range. Voting will be in September.

Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS). Just bring in and leave with Peggy. They will also accept PJ's, robes, slippers and toiletry bags. If you're traveling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS. Every little bit helps. Thank you.
**Thank you to all of you who have been bringing in toiletries. CTS is the ONLY one collecting for the Shelter.

Announcing Our First Annual Summer Shooting Expo! August 11, 2012
A CTS Customer Appreciation Celebration!

Don't let the name fool you...there will be much more than shooting at this event. Not that we need more than shooting. This will be an action packed day and we will not only be showing our appreciation for all your support we will be helping the community as well.
This year it is all about you, AND our community. We will be hosting an Inland Northwest Blood Drive, Collecting Toys for Tots, and collecting for the Post Falls Food Bank. So let's take a quick look at the events planned for August 11th. Of course we will have our annual FREE Swap Meet, but this year we are providing FREE range time, firearms and targets for you to test fire that firearm you are curious about (specially priced ammo will be available for this test firing).
We are trying to get as many manufacturer's representatives as possible here to show you the latest products. A Laser Shot video contest with prizes will be going on all day. We will have large quantities of ammo for sale at drastically reduced prices. We are now trying to do some bulk buying of items to offer you at blow-out prices. We will advise as these purchases are made. BOOMER the Bear, the Spokane Chiefs Mascot, will be here for the children. There will be games and prize drawings as well as many giveaways throughout the day. Free Hot dogs and Drinks will be available as well.
How cool is it to have the Inland Northwest Blood Drive here at CTS. After all it is the only way we want anyone to bleed at CTS. Anyone who donates blood at this event will be given a free "Blood Donor" t-shirt and a FREE day pass to use the range. The free pass is worth $17.00 and you will be helping our local blood bank which is in desperate need of blood. The summer months are always stressful for the people who maintain our blood reserves. This is an opportunity to really help our community.
I believe the powers to be don't have any idea how many donations we will generate this day. I told them the shooting community will surprise them with their generosity. Folks make me proud and commit to donating on this day. My biggest fear is that we don't generate enough donations to justify their staff working on a weekend and bringing out their beautiful collection vehicle. We are encouraging everyone to call CTS and sign up for a specific time to donate blood. Please figure on about 30 minutes time from start to finish if you have an appointment. Ask for Stephanie, she's keeping the sign-up sheet.
We encourage you to reserve your Swap Meet spot early. (Remember there's no charge). You can sell anything you want (other than firearms) at your table. You can turn into cash many of those non-shooting items that have been collecting dust around the house. This will be a well advertised event and we expect large crowds.
Mark your calendar for August 11th...9am-2pm! |
Hard to Find Firearms - Now In Stock!
Many of you remember the firearm and ammo shortages of the last National election year. I can assure you we are doing everything possible to stay ahead of this anticipated repeat performance. We are leveraging every industry contact to stay on top of their allocation lists. We have just received two firearms that many of you have been asking for. The S&W Governor and the SR 1911. They won't last long and they are few and far between.... If you have a hard to find gun on your wish list...let us know and we'll let you know when we get it.

August 13th Free Clinic - Survival Measures
Thanks to a suggestion from one of our members we have decided on the topic for our August FREE clinic. We will examine the many issues concerning survival in crisis. Topics such as preparedness, shelter in place, basic provisions, emergency communications, water filtration, rations, etc.. We'll also cover survival techniques while traveling.
This should be a fun clinic with a lot of useful information. This topic is high on the list for a lot of people. Especially given the tremendous devastation we have seen as a result of the storms and flooding that has crippled communities across the country. No one is immune from disasters natural or otherwise.

MICHAEL JANICH
is coming back!
Oct 27 & 28
Don't miss this opportunity to train with Michael Janich. You have watched him as the host of Personal Defense TV on Wednesday evenings. Now you can experience first hand why he is recognized as one of the best Martial Blade Instructors in the world. Last year Michael's class filled within 6 days of our newsletter announcement. We had over 20 names on a waiting list and had to turn away so many students that Michael has agreed to return to us here in the great Northwest.
If you took the class last time he was here this is a great opportunity to further refine your skills. Students have asked if it is the same class as last time. The basic presentation is the same as this is a system that Michael has developed. However, as you know, none of us who attended the first class came close to perfecting any of the skills and techniques presented. We all need as much exposure to these elements as we can get.
I was again the first name on the signup list as this is a class I can not miss. Please join me in making another fantastic showing of the Inland Northwest support of Michael's Martial Blade Concepts.
$275.00.
Since this is not a Center Target Sports class the "take a class forever for free" does not apply and there are no refunds.

Another Friend Lost I understand as we get older we experience the loss of friends more frequently than we did when we were young and carefree. However that doesn't make losing a dear friend any easier to experience or even understand. 2012 will go down in my mind as the year I lost two close friends. A few months ago I wrote here of the loss of my friend Bill Smullin and now I am writing of the loss of my friend Mel Westlake. Melvin (Mel) Westlake passed away on June 23. He was a dear friend, avid supporter of the NRA and the local Friends of the NRA committee, passionate hunter and a longtime trap shooter. He was a loving father and husband.
In the last few months Mel was focused on starting a youth trap team at one of the local high schools. Mel was my friend and I enjoyed having breakfast 3 to 4 times a week with him whenever I was not on the road. I will miss Mel, the local shooting community suffered a huge loss and our prayers are with his wife and family. |

Seldom Offered But Back Again...
For the Second Time This Summer...
Advanced Carbine at Fernan Rod and Gun Club!

Don't miss the most comprehensive Carbine class offered in the Northwest on August 18th at Fernan Rod and Gun Club outdoor range.
To the left is a picture of the Advanced Carbine class we just finished. The students here are practicing one hand only AR shooting.
As an advanced class there is less than 1 hr of classroom and approximately 7 hrs of shooting on the range. We will pickup where we left off at the end of basic carbine and move into a comprehensive format covering the carbine and also handgun transitions. Please make sure you check out the list of required equipment prior to registering for this class.
Advanced Carbine
Advanced Defensive Shotgun August 12th

Given the tremendous popularity of our Home Defense Shotgun class and the many requests for more advanced shotgun skills we have developed and are offering the advanced Shotgun Skills class. This is the shotgun class that teaches weapons transition, offensive and defensive techniques to include door breaching and skipping shot.
Defensive Shotgun 2 TACTICAL PISTOL _ September 8&9 It is that time of year again, Tactical Pistol Class to be exact. This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region. This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios. These are real world scenarios in a very real setting. Each student will participate in at least 6 scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force. Register Now! Tactical Pistol 5 Day Comprehensive Handgun Sept 24th - 28th. I guess the word is out as we are overwhelmed by requests for another 5 Day Comprehensive HG class. The last two classes have sold out and a few of you have asked me to up the number of students to 10 from 20. I really can't do that and keep the integrity of the class and expect the subsequent results this class has demonstrated.
Students are already signing up for this Sept class. If improving your shooting skills is what you want to do, this is the class for you. Every student in the last class improved their score by over 100 points by the end of the class. With a 300 point max score, that is a significant improvement. I am most proud of this course as it is designed to improve all shooters regardless of your skill level.

Welcome our 2 new employees
We continue to grow our staff to best serve your needs. Who would have thought that our staff would ever grow to 13 employees. This is only a reality because of the tremendous loyality and support of our patrons. Peggy and I along with our entire staff are very greatful to to all of you for your continued support.
We take the process of hiring staff members very seriously and we always strive for the best. The best is what I believe we have in our two newest employees. Both Dennis and Duane each bring unique qualities and great people skills to our staff. Please take the time to introduce yourself and help us make them feel welcome.
Meet Dennis Mader,
Dennis and his family moved to Idaho about 20 years ago after his retirement as a Special Agent, for the State Attorney General's office. During this time he was also a district firearms/ training officer, and was certified by the FBI in their training methods. He is a graduate of the CHP, DOJ, and the DEA National Academies, and holds many POST certificates.
We are particularly excited about the tremendous Antique Firearms knowledge Dennis brings to CTS. He is a long time student of historical firearms and their development, which has continued to today as a pastime and a real interest, so if you have any questions about that old or vintage firearm, please ask him. He is a Co founder of SASS, Cowboy Action Shooting.
· Dennis is a member of the following:
· Cody Museum
· Sharps Collectors Association Co Founder/Life
· Colt Collectors Association
· Single Action Shooting Society Co Founder/Life
· NRA Life
Meet Duane Wilcox
Duane grew up in Spokane and Elk, Washington. He is a fulltime Firefighter for Spokane City and previously served in the US Navy for 7 years as a Firefighter/Search and Rescue team during Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
He has been a rifle shooter for many years and has recently added Glock 19 to his arsenal. He and his family enjoy camping, spending time at the lake, dirt bike riding, mud bog racing, competing in car shows, target shooting, as well as snowmobiling, and skiing in the winter.
Duane is married to his beautiful wife for 16 years, together they have 3 beautiful daughters who are all looking forward to improving their shooting.

THE HEAT IS HERE...and our Windows Are Open
Windows, screen doors, skylights, patio doors, you name it, we tend to leave all these open when we are trying to get the air moving in our homes or garages.
Remember, when you leave these areas exposed to the public they tend to compromise your security. In the tracks or thresholds, place limiting devises like steel pins, rods or other methods of controlling the opening size. Don't forget that while we have these areas open we often pull back the shades, drapes, or curtains. Now passers by can see everything you have on display in your home or garage including yourself and your family. Out of sight out of mind can be a good thing when it comes to preserving your belongings.

Monthly Shooting Tip!
The Dynamic Grip and UNSIGHTED or MID-SEQUENCE FIRING METHODS So-called "point shooting," "instinctive firing," and other combat handgun aiming techniques are often misunderstood or misinterpreted. What I am referring to is handgun shooting techniques that do not have the shooter consciously acquiring the sights of the handgun at the moment of firing. These are either unsighted or mid-sequence firing methods. They can be termed as unsighted as they do not intentionally make use of the sights of the pistol, at least in terms of focus. I use the term mid-sequence as this refers to any handgun firing technique or position of the weapon upon discharge where the handgun was either not up to the shooter's line of sight, or was brought up to the line of sight, but did not receive focus on the sights, or was performed at some point during a natural draw stroke. There are various names and techniques that describe this genre of shooting. Part of the confusion and subsequent controversy may lie in the fact that there are so many different techniques, names, methods, and variations. With this in mind, it is often easy to overlook the practicality or utility of any given technique. Certainly, no one technique can work in every situation or for every shooter. Some situations where a handgun firing technique that does not permit full extension, front sight focus, or a conventional two-handed weaver or isosceles technique may be necessary when the shooter must fire immediately from the holster or drawn position. The shooter may have to react very quickly in very close quarters, where extension of the weapon is not feasible or would risk losing retention of the handgun. Some examples would be a stairway, when carrying a heavy load, or when in a vehicle and the weapon can't be brought up to the line of sight. POINTERS MID-SEQUENCE SHOOTING: Some components of the unsighted shot or mid-sequence engagement that you should consider are having the handgun in the field of view or cone of vision. Ideally, you should have the handgun (and thus the sights) up to the line of sight. Have what I often refer to as a "Dynamic Grip" and bore alignment with the shooter's forearm, with the axis of the bore parallel to the forearm, especially in the case of one-handed shooting. Even rearward pressure on the trigger, with the uptake of trigger slack continuous on the draw stroke and throughout the extension, where the shot breaks right at the moment of full extension of the handgun to where it is aligned on the target. Keep the eyes focused on the target, preferably on a pinpoint object or other part of the opponent in the vital area, synchronized with the trigger press, giving a finite point by which to ensure hand-eye coordination. If possible, fire the gun in one motion, with one set of synchronized muscular contractions. Don't shove the gun, as this may cause jerking or bucking of the gun, lock the wrist and the elbow(s) if possible. Don't limit all firing to one unsighted or mid-draw position. The shooter may be able to engage with the first or a few follow-up shots, then attempt to finish firing at a more stable or sighted position. With any shooting where the handgun is not within the line-of-sight to the target, the shooter will need to establish muscle memory and subconscious memory to ensure that the technique will work under stress, particularly if hand-eye coordination and support of the weapon of more necessary dependent on the exact technique anticipated. As with any technique, perfect practice makes perfect skill sets. Good luck.
