Welcome back to the Target Zone:
June is here and I find myself wondering where has the time gone. In looking at my upcoming travel schedule I realize that I am totally booked for 2012. We have even scheduled the first teaching assignments in Vegas and Chicago in 2013. July is but one example of my hectic travels and as a result I'm sorry to say won't be having a free clinic or member fun shoot in July.
I wanted to share another example of the positive affect someone properly trained and legally carrying a concealed weapon can have when innocent people are confronted with violence. A few weeks ago one of our students (first name Doug) was in the Salt Lake area on business. As he walked along a store front he came upon a man who had gone into one of the stores and purchased a kitchen knife and was now randomly stabbing innocent people. Doug was able to draw his concealed carry firearm and hold the knife welding man at bay until police arrived. Doug was properly trained and understood all the legal requirements for the use of deadly force and as a result was able to come to the aid of the innocent.
I can assure you that morning when Doug strapped his concealed firearm to his side he had no expectation that he would need it that evening. The fact remains that he understands that the firearm must be available if it is going to do you any good and that he should carry at all times when legal. GREAT job Doug you set the standard and we are all very thankful for your courage and your actions in helping save the lives of innocent strangers that evening.
We are always looking for gun locks. If you have any gun locks sitting around your house you'd like to donate to CTS we would be happy to take them. It is critical that all firearms be accompanied by a gun lock. We provide a gun lock with every firearm we sell. Now that we are buying so many used firearms we are having to purchase locks to accompany the firearm when sold. Any lock that we receive will allow us to keep the price as low as possible. In addition we often have customers who have firearms in the home but don't have any way to secure them. Any donated locks we have would allow us to pay it forward and provide a free lock to someone in need.
I will be teaching in Billings, MT, at the awesome Three Sights indoor range August 4 & 5. Combative Handgun and Low-Light Tactics are the two classes being offered. If you have any friends in the Billings area you may want to recommend they participate. This is the closest (out of the immediate area) that I will be teaching in 2012.
Many of asked so we wanted to pass along the fact that we try at every opportunity to be Green. We recycle all our paper targets, brass, and lead here at CTS. We even recycle our filters. One of our members (Harley) routinely picks up our paper and cardboard and deposits it all at local school recycle bins to support their recycle efforts.
***************************
Heads up...we will be closing early on Sunday Aug 19th for a staff function...hours will be 10am-2pm that day

We have added some new signs in the range so please adhere to these friendly reminders. One category of new signs is a series of signs along the back counter in both ranges. These signs say "Do Not Handle Firearms Here". The purpose of these signs is to remind everyone to CASE AND UNCASE ALL FIREARMS IN THE SHOOTING STALLS. We will be increasing our emphasis and do appreciate everyone complying with this very important safety rule.

Several years ago we were struggling to fill our afternoon range time and started a 2 for 1 program from noon to 3pm, M-F. Now we are so busy during this time frame that we're still going to offer the program, but we're changing the rules a bit. If you come in on the 2 for 1 deal, you'll be sharing a lane. Now that we are experiencing waiting lists, we feel this is only fair. Thank you for your continued patronage.
___________________________________________
Due to your continued support of CTS, we've decided to continue with our Monday opening hours. They will remain 11am-7pm and we will be open on Labor Day, but we will be closed on July 4th.
*********************************
Don't forget to send Peggy your vacation or business photos showing your Center Target Sports logo shirt or hat. She's started posting them on the bulletin board to your left when you enter the range. Voting will be in September.

**Thank you to all of you who have been bringing in toiletries. CTS is the ONLY one collecting for the Shelter.

It's time for our CTS Annual Swap Meet
We are planning a huge day of fun and excitement for the entire family. We will have a number of manufacturer's reps present to display their products, demo shoots, games and of course the FREE swap meet space for anyone to sell their items. You may sell anything but firearms on our property during this swap meet. So if you have that old holster or that fishing pole that hasn't been used in years and you want to convert it into cash...collect it all up and bring it to the swap meet and have some fun. We do ask that you call ahead and reserve your table space. 208-773-2331. We provide the space, you provide the table and merchandise and it is all free. We are trying to coordinate with the Inland Northwest Blood bank to have a blood drive during the swap meet. If we are successful, anyone who donates blood will be able to shoot for free on the 11th. In addition we will have food, games and even a visit from the Spokane Chiefs mascot Boomer the Bear. |

June 5th Free Clinic-Reloading

Call the range to reserve a seat for this clinic. 6pm. 773-2331
Due to Ed's travel schedule there will be No Free Clinic in July
August Free Clinic - Survival Measures
Thanks to a suggestion from one of our members we have decided on the topic for our August FREE clinic. We will examine the many issues concerning survival in crisis. Topics such as preparedness, shelter in place, basic provisions, emergency communications, water filtration, rations, etc.. We'll also cover survival techniques while traveling.
This should be a fun clinic with a lot of useful information. This topic is high on the list for a lot of people. Especially given the tremendous devastation we have seen as a result of the storms and flooding that has crippled communities across the country. No one is immune from disasters natural or otherwise.

MICHAEL JANICH
is coming back!
Oct 27 & 28
Don't miss this opportunity to train with Michael Janich. You have watched him as the host of Personal Defense TV on Wednesday evenings. Now you can experience first hand why he is recognized as one of the best Martial Blade Instructors in the world. Last year Michael's class filled within 6 days of our newsletter announcement. We had over 20 names on a waiting list and had to turn away so many students that Michael has agreed to return to us here in the great Northwest.
If you took the class last time he was here this is a great opportunity to further refine your skills. Students have asked if it is the same class as last time. The basic presentation is the same as this is a system that Michael has developed. However, as you know, none of us who attended the first class came close to perfecting any of the skills and techniques presented. We all need as much exposure to these elements as we can get.
I was again the first name on the signup list as this is a class I can not miss. Please join me in making another fantastic showing of the Inland Northwest support of Michael's Martial Blade Concepts.
Early bird sign-ups $250.00...after Father's Day $275.00.
Since this is not a Center Target Sports class the "take a class forever for free" does not apply.

We now have in stock the most accurate barrels for the AR platform that I have ever shot. The Noveske Polygonal rifled barrels are here. Quality Leather Belts
Have you ever reached for your gun to draw it out of the holster and it moved all over the place. The holster sagged, the gun was not held in place for you to properly grip it. Well, this is often the result of the holster not being supported by a quality dress belt.
Finally we have solved this problem. We have partnered with a local leather professional and are now offering these Idaho made high quality leather belts. Come in and see for yourself what a quality gun belt feels like.

Welcome our 2 new employees
We continue to grow our staff to best serve your needs. Who would have thought that our staff would ever grow to 13 employees. This is only a reality because of the tremendous loyality and support of our patrons. Peggy and I along with our entire staff are very greatful to to all of you for your continued support.
We take the process of hiring staff members very seriously and we always strive for the best. The best is what I believe we have in our two newest employees. Both Dennis and Duane each bring unique qualities and great people skills to our staff. Please take the time to introduce yourself and help us make them feel welcome.
Meet Dennis Mader,
Dennis and his family moved to Idaho about 20 years ago after his retirement as a Special Agent, for the State Attorney General's office. During this time he was also a district firearms/ training officer, and was certified by the FBI in their training methods. He is a graduate of the CHP, DOJ, and the DEA National Academies, and holds many POST certificates.
We are particularly excited about the tremendous Antique Firearms knowledge Dennis brings to CTS. He is a long time student of historical firearms and their development, which has continued to today as a pastime and a real interest, so if you have any questions about that old or vintage firearm, please ask him. He is a Co founder of SASS, Cowboy Action Shooting.
· Dennis is a member of the following:
· Cody Museum
· Sharps Collectors Association Co Founder/Life
· Colt Collectors Association
· Single Action Shooting Society Co Founder/Life
· NRA Life
Meet Duane Wilcox
Duane grew up in Spokane and Elk, Washington. He is a fulltime Firefighter for Spokane City and previously served in the US Navy for 7 years as a Firefighter/Search and Rescue team during Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
He has been a rifle shooter for many years and has recently added Glock 19 to his arsenal. He and his family enjoy camping, spending time at the lake, dirt bike riding, mud bog racing, competing in car shows, target shooting, as well as snowmobiling, and skiing in the winter.
Duane is married to his beautiful wife for 16 years, together they have 3 beautiful daughters who are all looking forward to improving their shooting.

Monthly Safety Tip!
Why Should We Train?
As the number of people choosing to exercise their right to concealed carry increases so does the chance of a CCW holder becoming involved in a critical situation. Just look above to the mention of our student Doug in Salt Lake City. I am often asked questions like "Why train?", or "Will training really make a difference?"
The fact is just about anybody can grasp the basics of firearms safety if they take the time to read and heed the manual that comes with the new firearm that they just purchased, but being able to use it effectively and safely during a critical (life and death) situation is another story all together.
Let's consider the CCW holder for example. Many states issue concealed carry permits and the requirements for issue differ greatly by state. Many states require some form of formal training and some do not prior to receiving a permit.
A firearm, when used for self defense, is a tool like any other that you may have in the work shop. Like many tools it can be lethal if misused or handled improperly, in the case of a pistol there is also the fact that you very well may be imprisoned for improper use of it even if you thought you were in the right.
For those that choose to carry a concealed pistol, it is imperative that you receive the proper training on when and when not to draw your weapon, and even more importantly when to actually discharge it if you have to draw. We know from our experience and what our students are telling us that, the old excuse of "I was afraid for my life" does not cut it anymore. If you are involved in a shooting where you are the shooter, you can be sure of the fact that you will be going through miles of red tape to justify your actions. This justification will be both from a criminal and civil perspective.
Knowing when not to shoot is just as important as knowing when to shoot, getting charged for murder or manslaughter for defending yourself or your family is a very real possibility if the situation is not handled correctly (even then, there have been cases where the individual was more than right in their actions, but was still charged with a crime).
There is also the aspect of safety. Shooting yourself while drawing your weapon kind of defeats the purpose. Accidental discharge when not faced with the intensity of a critical situation is an all too common occurrence and one must realize that as the intensity of the situation increases so does our need for sound firearm fundamentals.
If you own a pistol (or own and carry a concealed pistol) and you have not had any formal training, I strongly suggest that you attend a safety and defensive shooting course. Not only will it significantly cut the odds of an accidental injury to yourself or others, in the case of an actual shooting incident it can be a really good point in your favor that you were trained when and when not to shoot.
This is one of the most critical reasons why we require all our CCW students to qualify with their firearm. The state may not require the shooting evaluation but we believe it is very important to you, our program, and the community as a whole. Knowing the legal lethal force guidelines and applicable laws is critical to your ultimate survival of the incident and the courtroom.
The Second Amendment is in place for a good reason, but it is up to all of us to ensure that the bearing of arms is done in a responsible and safe manner that does not endanger the rights that the Second Amendment guarantees (or send you to jail in the process of defending yourself or your family on a technicality).
Why train?.....Need I Say More?
