Welcome back to the Target Zone:
Where does the time go? My schedule has been so hectic these past few weeks that I have decided to combine the April and May newsletters. There is so much going on in our industry especially with the election year fallout and CTS is no exception. As you will read below we have hired two new staff members in an effort to keep up with the demand for service.
Below please see my words on the Sheriff race here in Kootenai County. Even though I am not running this year, I have strong feelings about this race. What ever you do, Please vote for what the candidate stands for and not for his name recognition. We need change in this mismanaged agency and vote for who is going to make the change. But by all means...please get out and vote as this is our first opportunity in years to make a significant change in the Sheriff's dept and a change that the citizens of Kootenai County deserve.
We are already seeing tremendous demand for firearms and ammo. Stephanie and Ken are working very aggressively leveraging every vendor possible to keep the flow of ammo and firearms coming. We have more firearms in the vault and more defensive ammo in stock than ever before. One vendor last week sent us an email asking if we wanted a particular firearm. They said they had 223 in stock and felt they would sellout in a few days. They sold all 223 pistols in 7 minutes. We responded to their email in less than ten minutes but all 223 guns were gone. Never fear, we will do our best to make sure we do not have a repeat of 2008.
It is time to mine our lead again. We will be mining our bullet traps between May 6 - 12. This is a long process, but our contractor will do everything in his power to finish ahead of schedule. We appreciate your patience as we will experience limited lane availability during the mining process. We will be open with at least 5 lanes available all the time.
New Floors
How do you like our new floors in the range? We love the new high gloss caramel colored floors behind the firing line. They certainly add to the upgraded look we are striving for and are very practical when it comes to keeping them clean.
We will soon be adding some new signage in the range so please adhere to these friendly reminders. One category of new signage you will soon see is a series of signs along the back counter in both ranges. These signs will say "Do Not Handle Firearms Here". The purpose of these signs is to remind everyone to CASE AND UNCASE ALL FIREARMS IN THE SHOOTING STALLS. We will be increasing our emphasis and do appreciate everyone complying with this very important safety rule.
________________________________
Several years ago we were struggling to fill our afternoon range time and started a 2 for 1 program from noon to 3pm, M-F. Now we are so busy during this time frame that we're still going to offer the program, but we're changing the rules a bit. If you come in on the 2 for 1 deal, you'll be sharing a lane. Now that we are experiencing waiting lists, we feel this is only fair. Thank you for your continued patronage.
___________________________________________
Just a reminder to all our shooters that we do not allow birdshot in our range and we don't allow any rifles above a .223. If you use either of these in one of Ed's classes that doesn't mean you can use them when on your own time. Thank you for your understanding.
**********************************
Due to your continued support of CTS, we've decided to continue with our Monday opening hours. They will remain 11am-7pm and we will be open on Memorial Day and Labor Day, but we will be closed on July 4th.

MICHAEL JANICH is coming back!

Kootenai County Sheriff Race
The citizens of Kootenai County have a unique opportunity to effect much needed change in the leadership of the Kootenai County Sheriff's department. Current Sheriff Rocky Watson has decided not to run for re-election and a number of candidates are seeking our vote. I believe we must evaluate very closely what these candidates are saying. We must look beyond any individual name recognition or previous experience and vote for the candidate that will make the changes in this agency that the jail deputies, patrol deputies and this community deserve.
Throughout this current campaign candidates across the board have superficially discussed deputy retention and training, the jail, salaries and of course the budget. When the budget is discussed some candidates continue to blame the county commissioners for a lack of funding. For these candidates a real dose of reality is necessary. I am so tired of the commissioners being blamed for the lack of funding when in fact the 20+ million dollar Sheriff's budget is presently mismanaged. We would all like to have more money to spend each year, but we adjust our spending and allocate our income to best serve our family's needs. This is something very few of the candidates are talking about. In fact one candidate has indicated that if elected he would address the administration pay matrix before the deputy's pay issues. In essence he is saying that he and 7 other administrators would be sharing approximately $52,000 in additional income.
I have read a number of letters to the editor indicating that one of the candidates has over 20 years experience in the sheriff's department and his election would make for a smooth transition. I believe a smooth transition is not what is needed in this agency. How many changes will be made by electing someone who has been part of this broken system for so many years? The many years of experience and specifically the many years of perpetuating a system that has resulted in a top heavy administration with way too many chiefs and not enough Indians, is precisely the reason why we should not vote for the "years of experience and smooth transition".
My biggest fear in this election is that too many voters are going to vote for name recognition without really looking at the issues and any particular candidate's stated improvement plans for the Sheriff's department. We deserve better! These candidates have had over a year to develop a comprehensive plan for change and the ultimate improvement of the agency's fiscal condition, workforce morale, and services provided to this community.
Candidates in general are missing a tremendous opportunity to separate themselves from the pack by not discussing specific possible solutions such as a re-allocation or restructuring of the budget, jail policies, prisoner classification, Deputy promotions and pay adjustments and a complete restructure of the administration.
My biggest disappointment is that no one candidate has presented a comprehensive plan and we as a voting community are allowing this to happen. Are we all so complacent about one of the most powerful elected positions in the community? I hope we are not, but if indeed we are I guess we deserve a "smooth transition" and an agency with so many internal problems that will no doubt continue to perpetuate the same realities we have in place today (at least for the next 4 years).

We have Two New Team Members
We continue to experience tremendous growth and support from our patrons. Peggy and I along with the staff are very appreciative of your loyalty and patronage. We take the process of adding to our team very seriously and we always strive to find the best. We are very excited to introduce you to Dennis and Duane. Once you meet them you too will realize that they are indeed two of the best. Please take the time to introduce yourself to them the next time you are in the store.
Meet Dennis Mader
Dennis and his family moved to Idaho about 20 years ago after his retirement as a Special Agent for the State Attorney General's office. During this time he was also a district firearms/ training officer, and was certified by the FBI in their training methods. He graduated from the CHP, DOJ, and the DEA National Academies, and holds multiple POST certificates.
Dennis is also a long time student of historical firearms and their development, which has continued to today as a pastime and a real interest, so if you have any questions about that old or vintage firearm, please ask him. Dennis is a Co-founder of SASS, Cowboy Action Shooting and a member of the following:
· Cody Museum
· Sharps Collectors Association Co Founder/Life
· Colt Collectors Association
· Single Action Shooting Society Co Founder/Life
· NRA Life
Meet Duane Wilcox
Duane grew up in Spokane and Elk, Washington. He is a full time Firefighter for Spokane City and previously served in the US Navy for 7 years as a Firefighter and on the Search and Rescue team during Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
He has been a rifle shooter for many years and has recently added Glock 19 to his arsenal. He and his family enjoy camping, spending time at the lake, dirt bike riding, mud bog racing, competing in car shows, target shooting, as well as snowmobiling, and skiing in the winter.
Duane has been married to his beautiful wife for 16 years. Together they have 3 beautiful daughters who are all looking forward to improving their shooting. Make a point of introducing yourself the next time you're in.

John Farnam Returns In August!
Keeping with tradition for the 4th year in a row my friend, mentor and colleague will be here August 11th and 12th teaching Basic/Intermediate Defensive Handgun. Many of you know I am very particular about allowing outside instructors to teach at CTS. We turn down requests from many instructors every year. I know the importance of students experiencing training from a variety of sources but I believe the variety of instruction should not be a compromise in quality.
John Farnam is one of the best firearms instructors in the country. Simply put that is why we invite him here to teach you. John is to on the range training what Massad Ayoob is to court room testifying. They each are the best at what they do.
If you have a chance to take a John Farnam class don't miss it. You will be forever changed. Unlike other traveling instructors who try to fill classes in the Northwest but lack the enrollment to run the class (and have to cancel) John's classes will always fill.
Need I say more.....?

New Products
Our apologies...The KRISS Really Is On Its Way...The manufacturer had a recall and we got caught in the middle... Our Newest Machine gun should be here in the next couple of weeks...
Oh how sweet it is!
No one needs to shoot a machine gun...but trust me; it is an experience you should not miss out on. Enter the Kriss 45, now you are bordering on the definition between need to and want to. Come in and see for yourself.
Speaking of Machine Guns...
We have a new machine gun program. Per your requests we have created a machine gun package that includes the gun rental, two magazines of ammo and one of our new Machine gun CTS-Shirts for $50.00. If you do not want the CTS-shirt package you may rent the machine gun and two magazines for $35.00.
Both require the daily range fee if you are not already shooting in the range.
Pretty in Pink
Seems like anything pink is flying off the shelves these days. I can't believe the number of pink guns we have sold. Some patrons are even painting the engraved letters in their firearms with pink paint.
In an effort to satisfy your requests we have a full selection of pink shooting bags and totes in stock. So if you have that special female shooter in your life that seems to have everything, you can now surprise her with a special pink gift.
Michael Janich Training Videos...
Although not yet in stock, we are expecting delivery any day of a full selection of training videos produced by Michael Janich. Don't miss out on what I believe to be the best Martial Blade concept videos available anywhere. Michael is one of the most passionate and dedicated blade use and defense instructors I have ever met.
We waited a long time to add a knife program to our facility. We waited for the best. When I met Michael I was teaching in Washington DC and I just knew he was the man to bring the knife program to CTS. We did and it was a tremendous success. You may remember that the class sold out in 6 days and we had a waiting list of over 20 people.
These videos are a great opportunity for you to get familiar with Michael's teachings and learn from the best.
P. S. He's coming again in Oct.
If you're interested in Michael's next class, send an email to Peggy and she'll send you the dates as soon as we get them. peggy@centertargetsports.com

AR Armorer course
AR Armorer Kits are now in stock...
The AR Armorer kit that we put together is an opportunity to purchase the unique AR specific tool necessary to completely disassemble/reassemble, modify or build from scratch your AR rifle system. Our intent is to keep the cost to a minimum so we left out of the kit common tools that most people will already own and have on their work bench at home. By doing this we focused on Armorer specific tools that are hard to find and we capitalized on our ability to purchase in bulk which saves you money when you purchase the kit as opposed to the individual tools.
These kits seem to sell as fast as we can put them together so please bear with us if we run out of inventory from time to time. We will do our best to keep 3 in stock at all times. Let Steph know if you want one and we're out.
TACTICAL PISTOL COMING June 23th and 24h
It is that time of year again, Tactical Pistol Class to be exact. This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region. This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios.
These are real world scenarios in a very real setting. Each student will participate in at least 6 scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force.

Monthly Safety Tip!
A Look at Home Invasion
Given the rise in home invasions that we are experiencing throughout the country I thought it best to write a safety tip rather than a training tip in this newsletter. I can only imagine the horror associated with the frightening and potentially dangerous crimes that can occur to a family experiencing a home invasion. I believe the greatest impact to us is the fact that the one place that we think of as our sanctuary has been violated.
When robbers force their way into an occupied home, apartment or hotel room to commit a crime it is classified as a home invasion. Many police agencies and the Department of Justice statistically record the crime as a residential burglary or a robbery making it difficult to track the crime of home invasion. The frightening thing about home invasion is that it is often motivated by a variety of criminal intentions. Usually the intention is robbery.
Burglary Vs. Home Invasion
Burglars work mostly during the day when a residence is more likely to be unoccupied. Burglars will avoid a confrontation and will usually flee when approached. Most burglaries do not result in violence unless the criminal is cornered and uses force to escape.
Home invaders in contrast, work more often at night and on weekends when homes are more likely to be occupied. The home invader will sometimes target the homeowner as well as the home. Likely targets may include a woman living alone, a wealthy senior citizen or a known drug dealer, for example. It is not unheard of for a robber to follow you home based on the value of the car you are driving or the jewelry you are wearing.
The greatest violence usually occurs during the initial sixty seconds of the confrontation and home invaders often come prepared with handcuffs, rope, duct tape, and firearms. Some in-home robbers appear to enjoy the intimidation, domination, and violence and some even claim it's a "rush." I believe the longer the invader is in the home the stronger their position. As they pass the time they are gathering intel, i.e. the knife on the kitchen counter, the bat behind the door, the cell phone on the coffee table and so on. An important point to remember is that isolation breeds aggression. Behind your closed doors you are more susceptible to more violence that you would be if attacked on the street.
Invasion Trends
The most common point of attack is through the front door or garage. Sometimes the home invader will simply kick open the door and confront everyone inside. More common is when the home invaders knock on the door first or ring the bell. The home invader hopes that the occupant will simply open the door, without question, in response to their knock. Unfortunately, many people do just that. Home invaders will sometimes use a ruse or impersonation to get you to open the door. They have been known to pretend to be delivering a package, flowers or lie about an accident like hitting your parked car.
An Ounce of Prevention
Methods of preventing daytime burglaries will go a long way to preventing forced entry home robberies. If you can delay a home invader at the point of entry then you have a chance of deterring them or have time to call the police. Solid core doors, deadbolts, reinforced strike plates and hinges, and additional window blocking devices will stop most forced entries.
Often the weakest link in home security is the family that fails to lock doors or windows or who open doors without question. The best defense against home invasion is education and planning. Parents should hold a family meeting to discuss how to answer the door when someone knocks and how to attack if your home is invaded.
Remember these important security steps:
- Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, and window security devices
- Keep your doors, windows, and garages locked at all times
- Use extended length screws to secure strike plates and hinges
- Use the door peephole BEFORE opening the door
- Keep lights on around the exterior to help you see clearly
- Do not trust a chain-latch as a barrier to partially open the door
- Never open the door to strangers or solicitors
- Call the police if the stranger acts suspicious
- Alert your neighbors to suspicious solicitors
- Have an escape plan in mind for your family
- Train family members on where to go and what to say. This plan should include your children. If someone can escape, the invaders will have lost their advantage of privacy and time.
- Use your alarm systems & consider a cell call out system
· Never stop thinking if you are held captive. Stay calm and take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves.
· Often, police are asked if people should resist invaders. There is no set answer for this, as it depends on the physical and mental capabilities of each person.
· Don't fight over property with an intruder. Let them have the property; it is not worth your life and can be replaced.
· Never follow the intruder from scene, call 911 and get the best description you can get.
