Welcome back to the Target Zone:

I can't believe how quickly time flies.  We are again as you will read below planning on the arrival of John Farnam for another class.  We are only a week or so away from hosting Michael Janich and it seems like only yesterday when we were teaching an LE program in DC (almost a year ago)and I asked him to teach his class here at CTS.

Speaking of time flying, we celebrated Steph's 3 year anniversary with CTS last week and Happy Birthday to her on April 2nd!

MEMBERS ONLY Alert...

If you're a member, the next time you are in and in fact every time you are in for as long as supplies last please ask a staff member for a FREE pass that you can give away.  This pass is good for a FREE range day with the purchase of a box of centerfire ammo.

A perfect opportunity to introduce someone to the CTS experience and they will thank you for it.  The passes expire May 30th so be sure to ask for them.  Good for friends, colleagues, mechanics, waiters, massage therapists, doctors, anyone you want to thank.

Out with the old and in with the new...

Since adding the Pro Shot cleaning line and seeing the huge improvement in these solvents and cleaning/lubricating accessories we have decided to clear out some of the previously stocked cleaning supplies. Now is the time to realize some huge savings on select cleaning products, while supplies last.

SPECIAL Clearance Sale!

adcorp

We are selling an Adcor Defense AR piston rifle and an Adcor piston upper at below cost. If you are looking for a quality piston rifle or upper you will never find them at below cost again. Take advantage of these prices while they last.

We are totally committed to the PWS rifle and the Black Rifle companies and we need the wall space to display our inventory. We did not make this decision lightly and  judging from the feedback from many of you who are already shooting either the PWS or BRC firearms we were right!

AR Soft Cases and Viking Battle Belts.

With the tremendous increase in the demand for AR's and accessories and the popularity of our defensive classes we have increased our product inventory. We now stock every size soft AR case for your convenience. No excuse not to protect your AR investment as you transport your rifle and associated accessories.

If you are progressing to the more advanced level of defensive classes you will soon recognize the importance of a quality holster/magazine carry system. Once you try a Battle Belt setup you will never go back to the old holster on your dress belt again. The Battle Belt provides you with a very modular method of setting your gear up to best fit your needs. This when combined with the easy on and off of your equipment is hard to beat.

A major benefit that cannot be overlooked is the comfort factor. The Battle Belt allows you to carry all your gear for hours or even days without any discomfort on your hips or lower back.

Tom Tested Items!

tom keys

I don't know many people who are as hard on gear as our employee Tom. So we decided to capitalize on his ability to find fault or favor in items we offer in the retail area.   We have decided to "Tag" inventory items that Tom has personally tested, evaluated or uses.

Look for these tags and understand that as we say around here, "If it is Tom proof it will typically out last the rest of us". Shop with confidence when you purchase a Tom tested item. Thanks Tom.

AR Armorer Kits are now in stock...

The AR Armorer kit that we put together is an opportunity to purchase the unique AR specific tool necessary to completely disassemble/reassemble, modify or build from scratch your AR rifle system. Our intent is to keep the cost to a minimum so we left out of the kit common tools that most people will already own and have on their work bench at home. By doing this we focused on Armorer specific tools that are hard to find and we capitalized on our ability to purchase in bulk which saves you money when you purchase the kit as opposed to the individual tools.

These kits seem to sell as fast as we can put them together so please bear with us if we run out of inventory from time to time. We will do our best to keep 3 in stock at all times. Let Steph know if you want one and we're out.

                                    ATTENTION

MICHAEL JANICH STUDENTS

If you are enrolled in the March 31st April 1st two day Martial Blade Concepts Course taught by Michael Janich, please read the following information.

Due to the overwhelming demand for range access we have decided to move the Michael Janich class to Old Harley Davidson building on Appleway in CDA.  It is west of Hwy 95, and next to the Shilo Inn.  The class will start at 8am both days and plan on staying until 5pm.

Equipment suggestions are as follows: Students will need a purpose-designed training knife-ideally one that replicates their actual carry knife as closely as possible. It is also recommended that they have eye protection (shooting glasses or goggles) and an arm guard (a McDavid thigh wrap works great). As for clothing, comfortable street clothes and tennis shoes work best.

We are offering a couple Special Pricing packages on equipment for this class.  This Reduced pricing is available ONLY to students enrolled in the class and purchases must be made prior to March 31st.

Package #I is a Spyderco Training Knife and McDavid Neoprene wrap for 15% discount.

Package #2 is 20% Discount on a Spyderco Matching set of Training and real knifes.

Package #3 is 10% off any McDavid Neoprene wraps.

Also, Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS).  Just bring in and leave with Peggy.  They will also accept PJ's, robes, slippers and toiletry bags.  If you're travelling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS.  Every little bit helps.  Thank you.

Member Reservations!

I would like to again explain our member reservation policy. As you know members are able to call ahead and reserve a shooting lane for one hour based on availability. We implemented this system due to the tremendous popularity of our training programs and the fact that there are times when the tactical bay is tied up which limits access to all 15 lanes. In addition to the reservation system we are also working to limit these bottlenecks through creative class scheduling.

classroomIn an effort to guarantee our members access to a shooting lane, we have dedicated two lanes in the fixed bay to member only reservations. This is how it works. These lanes are open to any walk in shooter if no reservations exist when the walk in shooter is requesting access. If a member wishes to reserve a lane for a specific hour and no one else has reserved one of the two member lanes for that time, they are given the reservation. Any walk in shooter prior to the reserved time will be allowed to shoot on the open lane with the understanding that they may be asked to vacate the lane at the time of the arrival of the member with a reservation.

A few issues have surfaced since our reservation system was implemented. I hope to clear these up here. Reservations will not be accepted before 48hrs and there must be at least 2 hours notice between the reservation and the desired reservation time. Because we never have more than 2 lanes available at any given time, members can't make reservations for non-members.

Members are allowed a 5 minute grace period for late arrival. Reservations will be forfeited after that 5 minute grace period. Members who no-show for 3 reservations within a one year period will not be allowed to make future reservations. All reservations must be made by contacting a staff member in person or by phone. We will not take voice mail or email reservations. When making a reservation you must give your member number.

If you have any questions about our policy please ask a staff member.

A Friend Lost

A few weeks ago I had lunch with a dear friend as we often did when he came intosmullin town.  A few days later he passed away.  His passing is a terrible loss to me and my staff here at Center Target Sports as well as the shooting community around the world.

Bill Smullin of Prichard, Idaho was the founder and creative genius of the Surelock Holster manufactured by his company "Holsters Plus".  Bill and I had a unique friendship.  He appreciated the way I promoted his invention and respected the fact that we maintained the value of his holsters by never discounting them or selling them to discount houses that approached us over the years.

I believe the Surelock III holster is the best Kydex holster made.  We have sold hundreds and I have always taken pride in telling students throughout the country when they show up for one of my classes wearing a Surelock, "The guy that made that holster is my friend".

I will miss my friend Bill and all our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Bev and their family.

Rest In Peace, Grumpy!

A New Look

Thank you to everyone who has commented on our "New Look" in the retail area. The changes are still taking place but, it is encouraging to hear all the positive comments about the new paint, cabinets and lighting. A special thanks to my staff for putting up with the mess and more importantly cleaning up after my mess as we have been making many of the improvements while open to the public and taking care of customers.

CTS is a special place. We strive to provide Better Products, Better Service and a Better Experience. Part of the experience is a first class facility in function and appearance. We hear you and we are trying at every opportunity to deliver. Look for more improvements to come in the next few weeks.

John Farnam Returns In August!

farnamKeeping with tradition for the 4th year in a row my friend, mentor and colleague will be here August 11th and 12th teaching Basic/Intermediate Defensive Handgun. Many of you know I am very particular about allowing outside instructors to teach at CTS. We turn down requests from many instructors every year. I know the importance of students experiencing training from a variety of sources but I believe the variety of instruction should not be a compromise in quality.

John Farnam is one of the best firearms instructors in the country. Simply put that is why we invite him here to teach you. John is to on the range training what Massad Ayoob is to court room testifying. They each are the best at what they do.

If you have a chance to take a John Farnam class don't miss it. You will be forever changed. Unlike other traveling instructors who try to fill classes in the Northwest but lack the enrollment to run the class (and have to cancel) John's classes will always fill.

Need I say more.....?

 door jammer

The Ultimate Door Stop Device.

We've found a super heavy duty adjustable bar that will prevent any door from opening until you want it to.  Of course you can buy door jammers that are less expensive but I have never seen another version even close to this quality in material and construction.

This bar is engineered with far-superior quality and addresses common points of failure in cheaper doorjammers. Now isn't that peace of mind worth it? Sometimes you really DO get what you pay for! This bar is made of 16 gauge, powder coated steel. There are no plastic parts. This bar installs in seconds, no tools required. The bar has a flex head and the foot is 2"x4" rubber coated, steel, articulating, non-marring, providing for a solid grip.

Great for Home, Apartment, Dorm, Traveling, extends from 36" to 51". This bar works great on carpet, tile, concrete, or wood.

And the best part...it's made in North Idaho.

The KRISS Is On Its Way...  Our Newest Machinegun....

kriss

We are expecting delivery of our newest full auto machinegun on Fri March 23rd.  Oh how sweet it is!

The concept and design of the KRISS is unmatched in modern machinegun design and it is still something of revolutionary. The recoil of the .45ACP cartridge is driven down instead of back into the shoulder, and this makes the gun much more controllable than a standard .45ACP sub gun.

For sheer firepower on target the .45ACP KRISS and its unique recoil management system has the potential to take significant market share in the police and military market.

No one needs to shoot a machinegun...but trust me; it is an experience you should not miss out on. Enter the Kriss 45, now you are bordering on the definition between need to and want to. Come in and see for yourself.

mg shirt Speaking of Machine Guns...

We have a new machine gun program.  Per your requests we have created a machine gun package that includes the gun rental, two magazines of ammo and one of our new Machinegun T-Shirts for $50.00.  If you do not want the T-shirt package you may rent the machinegun and two magazines for $35.00.

Both require the daily range fee if you are not already shooting in the range.

Monthly Training Tip!

This month let us review... With a recent increase in the number of Mistake of Fact or Questionable shootings across the country I believe this review is timely. In class I have often expressed my concerns with some of the more popular Castle Doctrine or some of the so called Shoot First laws touted by some States. The recent controversy surrounding the neighborhood watch shooting of the 16yr old in Florida comes to mind. Have you all taken note that now the Federal government is looking into this shooting. How many times have you heard me say in class "in high profile cases States are always subject to Federal intervention"?

Before we begin this review I want to remind you again as we state in every class, I am Not an Attorney and I am Not offering any legal advice or legal opinions. Anytime you have a legal question, you should ask an experienced attorney.

Anytime the use of deadly force is in the news it is accompanied by arguments on both sides of the gun control and 2nd Amendment right issues. My immediate concerns are more towards your freedom to walk the streets and or keep all the possessions you have worked so hard to accumulate throughout your life.

In every CCW class I teach I go to great lengths to emphasize the many moral, ethical, criminal and civil issues surrounding the use of deadly force. I spend a great deal of class time using scenarios and or real world examples of our criminal and judicial processes in action. At the basis of all these elements is what we call the "Double Nickel".

OK, before you read on, please try to list the double nickel items. Hint, I am referring to the 5 things that must be present in order to use deadly force and the 5 things that I want you to say to the responding officers. If you were successful at naming the double nickel items then pat yourself on the back...You made me proud. If you failed to name them and you carry a concealed weapon you are at a much greater risk than those brought on by any bad guy.

For review here are the five things that must be present in order for you to use deadly force: Immediate and unavoidable danger of death or grave injury to the innocent. Coupled with your ability to articulate that the threat had the Ability, Opportunity, and was acting in Jeopardy.   Here are the 5 things I want you to say to the first responders: You are the Victim, Identify any physical evidence, identify any witnesses, tell the officer you are ready to sign the complaint, and last but not least, tell the officer you will be happy to cooperate with the investigation as soon as you have spoken with your attorney.

OK, now that we have that out of the way, let us review some of the critical issues that are often lost in these deadly force discussions. An important consideration is the Ability i.e... weapon or no weapon issue. We all realize the obvious here. If there is no weapon present we have an increased burden to convince the court that deadly force was justified. We get into real trouble here if when the incident is looked at in retrospect the reasonable and prudent person comes to the conclusion that there was no real danger of serious injury. We are going to be held to a higher standard and must always guard against those who foolishly believe that a CCW holder is always looking to use their weapon.

In this area of ability/weapon or no weapon we can sometimes see a deeper connection to jeopardy as it pertains to the ultimate level of the threat. In the absence of the weapon jeopardy, the elements of jeopardy will go a long way to supporting our claim of death or serious injury. For instance if the threat does not display a weapon but in his attack he states for all present to hear "I am going to beat you to a pulp" or "I am going to smash your face through that window" our claim as to the seriousness of the attack, and the ultimate necessity for deadly force will be easier to prove.

The mood of the court is always a concern. We must realize the scrutiny we will be subjected to after any lethal encounter. These encounters often happen at a distance of zero to 6 feet, in diminished light and in a very short time period. The courts will have as long as they need to dissect everything that happened and all that you did. Despite Justice Holmes ruling that states "detached reflection is unnecessary in the face of an upturned knife" you will at some level be second guessed. My intent here is not to scare anyone out of using deadly force when it is necessary. My intent is to remind us all of the seriousness of using deadly force and how important it is to know the elements necessary and how we should conduct ourselves after such a traumatic life changing event.

As to what I am about to write, I can hear my more advanced students laughing out loud. AWARENESS, AWARENESS, AWARENESS...will keep you safe. Heard that before? I know some of you are laughing, but do you all see how awareness can have a dynamic impact on all we have been discussing here?

If you are aware of your surroundings you will certainly be in a better position to make decisions that will ultimately be more effective, appropriate, and easier for the masses (your jury/peers) to understand. After all, this is ultimately what it will come down to... were your actions justified, legal, and appropriate to the circumstances?

Think about it.... Be Safe...Ed
