Welcome back to the Target Zone:

I know it is the middle of February and I am just getting this newsletter out, sorry!!   Peggy and I have not stopped since the beginning of the year. As many of you know, January is not only a very busy time for the range but it is also our buying show period. We start with the SHOT show in Las Vegas and end with the Acusport show in Texas. It is a two edge sword as the schedule is hectic but the new items we are able to feel, touch and ultimately bring back to you in North Idaho is worth it. Please see some of the many new items listed below.

I do appreciate this opportunity to share my thoughts and information with all of you so I guess I'd better get going. I want to talk a bit about coming to class prepared. We teach all levels of training in a variety of classes. For the most part this occurs with little or no disruption. However, because our Defensive level classes are so comprehensive, students who show up without the items listed in the "Required Equipment" section of the class flyer and the class listing on the website cause a disruption in class. It sounds so simple but our defensive classes for example, build in content to a very advanced level and the whole class suffers if we have to stop for equipment issues. It is never a problem due to student experience as the classes are designed to progress at the rate of the entire class. But when we can not even begin the class because we are trying to outfit someone, it can be very stressful for me and certainly not fair to the rest of the students who arrived with the required equipment. Please ask our staff if you have any questions about equipment requirements.

Now a word about range rules. We have been very busy lately and that is a good thing. We have even had a minimal waiting list for lanes from time to time. This is not a bad thing as it means we are healthy and will be here long after I am gone. But, back to safety. We are always most concerned about safety. Those concerns become even more critical to us as we get busy. The range rules are read to everyone before access to the range the first time you come in to shoot. In theory our computer system maintains this info forever. As with any system, occasionally, a name is dropped or not saved for some reason. When this happens you will be asked to sign the range rules again. We appreciate your patience when this happens. Looking at it from our perspective, our staff would have much preferred just getting you on the range without repeating the process. But, as is the case in all liability issues, we must be thorough.

As for the rules themselves...THEY MUST BE OBEYED. It amazes me how someone can be processed through the rules, hear them, acknowledge and sign them, and immediately go out onto the range and VIOLATE them. We will be cracking down on range violations and recording violations in the patron's history. If a patron accumulates 3 violations they will be banned from the facility for 90 days. Any further violations after the 90 days will result with a permanent removal from the range.

One of the most violated range rules is people handling firearms outside of the shooting stall. This violation normally occurs when casing or uncasing firearms from their carry bag or case. Remember this must ALWAYS be done in the shooting stall. When this rule is followed, there will never be a firearm on the back counter in the range area. Handgun or long gun there should never be an uncased firearm on the back counter in the range areas.

As a perk to members, we allow you to reserve one lane for one hour up to 48 hrs in advance. It is important that these reservations be made at least 3 hours in advance. You can't come in at 5 min to the hr (when all lanes are occupied) and reserve a lane on the next hour and expect us to remove a shooter from the lane. Hopefully this makes sense to all of you and you understand our position. The good thing about the waiting list those few times we do have one is that it is almost never longer than 30 minutes.

Many have commented on the new video loop playing in the lobby. A very special thanks to member and friend Al Gregory for all his efforts in creating this awesome video. Al is also responsible for taking the picture of the new truck wrap on my Dodge and the new Tactical Services website. Thanks Al.

                      ******************

Janich        THANK YOU... it's full!

The response to the Michael Janich Knife class has been overwhelming.  It filled in less than 10 days.  We do have a waiting list as people may cancel in an emergency....If so, we will call the list in the order they called in.

                            ****************

The March Member Fun Shoot topic will be "Shoot, Don't Shoot, shooting from barricades and drawing from a holster".  So if you are a member and want practice in these areas...show up and join the fun on Monday March 12 at 5pm.  Those who show up will pick the topic for next month's Fun Shoot.

Holster is required for this Fun Shoot !

We Are the Nation's newest Spyderco dealer....

In an effort to have all your knife needs covered we have entered the world of Spyderco tactical knives and trainers.  We will have all your training knives in stock at unbeatable prices if you choose to use a Spyderco knife in the Mike Janich class next month.

spyderco
Dull Edge Trainer Version Knife

People say to the Spyderco design team, "you must design in the dark because your knives look so strange." The unique and recognizable Spyderco appearance is a result of designing ergonomic functional tools rather than applying lipstick and nylons to a pocketknife. They may look curious, homely, whatever, but they will never be called unusable or undependable.

Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing. In their million-dollar testing facility they examine edge retention with a CATRA machine, look for rust development with Q-FOG, check the force needed to open and close a knife. They also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat-treating and actively search for higher quality, performance enhancing steels and materials.

As a customer you probably don't think about this, or much care, but it allows Spyderco to put forth a promise. When you purchase a Spyderco you are buying a high-quality reliable cutting tool designed and manufactured for peak performance and ergonomic comfort.

As they say...Those Who Know Carry Spyderco. Come in and see for yourself.

Seldom Offered But Back Again...

5 Day Comprehensive Handgun March 5th - 9th. I guess the word is out as firing linewe are overwhelmed by requests for another 5 Day Comprehensive HG class.  The last two classes have sold out and a few of you have asked me to up the number of students to 20 from 10.  I really can't do that and keep the integrity of the class and expect the subsequent results this class has demonstrated.

Students are already signing up for this March class.  If improving your shooting skills is what you want to do, this is the class for you.  Every student in the last class improved their score by over 100 points by the end of the class.  With a 300 point max score, that is a significant improvement.  I am most proud of this course as it is designed to improve all shooters regardless of your skill level.

Terminal Ballistics March 3rd. Don't miss this opportunity to get real answers to thoseammo stopping power, knockdown power myths.  During this 8 hour course students develop an understanding of terminal ballistics and the elements and physiological factors necessary for high stress shooting skills.  Critical decision making and survival are the cornerstones to all practical exercises included in this course.

A bullet proof vest will be shot as well as 3 dimensional targets designed to improve the students understanding of tactical anatomy.

Terminal Ballistics Class

Defensive Shotgun 2 Course Offered !

breechingDue to the popularity of our Home Defense Shotgun courses we have added an advanced shotgun class we call "Defensive Shotgun 2".  Don't miss this class if you want to explore and experience the tremendous diversity and flexibility of the shotgun weapons system.

This class is scheduled on March 24th and again on April 29th and includes a breaching demonstration and an in depth look at advanced shotgun versatility.  Students will learn one hand operation and malfunction response.  We will use the shotgun pattern data to deploy the shotgun in situations that one would not ordinarily think of the shotgun as being capable of solving.

Don't miss this opportunity to take your shotgun knowledge and skill sets to the next level.

 Defensive Shotgun 2 Class

Defensive Handgun II

With a Tactical Pistol class on the horizon...now is the time to get the pre-requisites out of the way.  We have been offering a number of DEf HG I classes so students will be ready for Defensive HG II which is scheduled on March 18th.CCW gun

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in Defensive HG I (CTS-201). Students will learn and practice the skills and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets.

Monthly Training Tip!

Over the years many students have come to CTS to learn advanced defensive shooting techniques. In many cases, students have lacked basic shooting skills and firearm manipulation skills. This despite telling me they have taken numerous classes from other schools or big-named instructors.

This article is to provide some insight to basic Defensive Shooting skills. Let's first start with the shooting stance or as I often refer to it as the "anchor point". This is the position from which you want to begin and end a fight.  It should be a stance that allows for a stable, mobile, and balanced fighting platform. This anchor point (stance) should not fall apart under stress and capitalize on Gross Motor Skills and not rely on the ever diminishing fine motor skills which will deteriorate under life and death conditions.

Your performance of any task will suffer during body alarm and the massive adrenaline dump that brings with it the hormone Cortisol and many others. You must learn the basics well. In order to produce accurate hits with a handgun, you need to do all of the following: grip and hold the handgun securely; maintain a stable and balanced stance; aim the handgun properly and maintain good aim for follow-up shots; control the handgun's recoil; and operate the trigger in as controlled a manner as possible.

Basic principles that must be followed in a stressful conflict are the same that we preach during training. See below:

  • The Anchor Point stance Defensive Shooting is about fighting with a handgun. To gain the advantage in a fight, you need to adopt a stable, balanced, and mobile stance. Balanced so that you are not thrown over by the gun's recoil or anything else. Mobile so that you are not a stationary target. Movement seizes the initiative may help you achieve dominance.

I often observe students "Water Skiing" shooting with a backward lean. Many stand too rigid like a pole, and many stand square to their target with both feet parallel. None of these stances are aggressive fighting stances.

  • The higher the hand is to the handgun's bore axis, the easier it is to control the gun during recoil in order to deliver accurate follow up shots. You can make the bore axis sit lower in the hands by gripping the handgun with your master hand as high up on the back strap as is possible. This increases your control over the gun whether you are shooting with one hand or two.

  • The "Crush Grip", you cannot grip a handgun too hard or too strongly. In real combat, defensive shooting means you are fighting for your life. Are you going to be relaxed at such a time? The answer is, of course not. You are going to be holding onto your life support system, your weapon, as if your life depends on it-and it does. Get used to it now. A crush grip or convulsive grip will make your handgun more difficult for your opponents to take away from you. A crush grip will help you control a powerful handgun's recoil or the snappy recoil of a not so powerful mouse gun.

  • The front sight, the bullet will go where the muzzle is pointed. To assure that the muzzle is pointed where you want the bullet to hit, you must have a reliable way of indexing the muzzle on target. That is the purpose of the front sight. The front sight helps you align your handgun's muzzle with your point of aim on the target. This is usually accomplished in coordination with the rear sight. Verifying that the front sight is centered in the rear sight notch is called sight alignment, and superimposing your aligned front and rear sights onto your point of aim on the target is called getting a sight picture. The more precise your shot or shots need to be, the smaller your target, or the greater your distance from your target, the more precise your sight alignment and sight picture need to be, and the more time you will need to take those precise shots.

  • Trigger control helps the shooter maintain sight alignment and therefore muzzle alignment as the gun is fired and immediately afterward. Afterward is called follow-through. It means giving the bullet enough time to exit the barrel by keeping the gun directed at the point of aim while breaking the shot, and subsequently, recovering your point of aim after the gun travels through its arc of recoil so that you can prepare for a follow-up shot. The goal of defensive marksmanship is to achieve combat accurate hits as fast as possible.

Combat accurate hits are defined as shots that inflict disabling damage on the opponent. In any fight, the fighter who lands the first good hits on his opponent has the edge. In a gunfight, this translates into shooting well placed bullets into your opponent before he hits you! It is foolish to sacrifice accuracy for speed. You can't miss fast enough to win a gunfight.

Distance, target size, and speed are all factors in that determination. The shooter may have the precise sight picture of the conventional marksmanship manual. They may have a similar image in line of sight, seen quickly and less than perfectly (Col. Jeff Cooper's concept of 'flash sight picture'). Out to roughly seven yards with a handgun, the front sight sitting above the rear sight is adequate for a heart-area hit, and can be indexed even in secondary or tertiary focus.

  • The smooth roll Good trigger control is the most important aspect of getting good hits. It becomes even more important under stress. Poor trigger control is one of the biggest reasons for dropped and errant shots. It is logical that to keep the muzzle on target, the shooter needs to smoothly operate the trigger. The goal is to smoothly press the trigger all the way rearward without hesitation until the shot breaks and then to ride the trigger forward as the trigger resets for the next shot. Trigger control can be practiced through dry fire in addition to live fire; so can the other fundamentals of marksmanship.

Practice Drill - Live Fire Focus Drill:

The following live fire drill is called the One Hole Drill.

This drill makes use of the principle that if you aim small, you will miss small.

Start out at a reasonable distance from your target. Don't be ashamed for this to be nine feet!

Pick a small spot on your paper target as your point of aim. You can draw a one inch circle in black magic marker to mark the spot. Go through your Anchor Point checklist of marksmanship fundamentals as you focus on your aim point. Punch your handgun out toward your aim point, as you focus intently on your front sight and acquire a sight picture. Your front sight should be in sharp focus as contrasted with a relatively slightly blurred target and rear sight. Recognize that you can only visually focus sharply with your eyes on one object at a time.

Keeping your gun steady (you should be in a power stance, with a high-handed, two-handed hard grasp on your handgun), smoothly roll your trigger rearward as you stay focused on your front sight. Watch your front sight as the shot breaks and through the gun's arc of recoil. Don't peek over your gun to see the shot!

Hold your trigger to the rear as the gun recoils and then ride your trigger forward until it resets as the gun settles back on target. Now, prepare for your next shot by taking up any slack in the trigger. Take a string of shots without checking where those shots went, and then after shooting the string, lower the gun to a ready position and check the results of your work.

Your goal is a perfect one inch group. You want to exercise your fundamentals at the target distance at which you are working until you attain a perfect one inch group, and when you do, you can then move backward to a greater distance (e.g., 5 to 7 to 10 to 12 to 15 to 20 to 25 yards, and so on). You keep moving backward (increasing the distance) until you can no longer shoot a perfect group at a given distance, and then you stay and work at that distance.

This drill will increase your accuracy and marksmanship skill in live fire.

In Summary - Without a solid foundation in the fundamentals, advanced shooting techniques fall short. Defensive and combat oriented shooters need to create the discipline to practice their fundamentals regularly in order to keep their edge and maintain their advanced skills. Understand your Anchor Point and know how to apply the Anchor Point theory to your shooting while training so that it becomes second nature when it counts.
