Welcome back to the Target Zone:
I can't believe it is 2012 already. I guess it is to be expected as I was just getting into the grove with 2011. Now it's time to start all over again. We sure ended 2011 with a bang and our local Food Bank was a big winner thanks to all of your support. This picture is deceiving as it does not show just how much food in volume and in weight that was in the back of my truck with your donations as Peggy and I made the delivery. Thank you to everyone who donated and congratulations to Gerry Sword for winning the gift certificate to CTS in our drawing.

Also ending the year on a high note, we had 114 people at the Dec free clinic and over 45 at the Jan clinic. February promises to be another well attended clinic as the topic is "Travel Safety". (see below) Please don't forget to send in your ideas for future clinics. We do these for your benefit and no one knows better that you what we should be offering.
Our biggest news of the New Year is that as of Jan 9th our winter hours will include Mondays from 11am to 7pm. We'll decide around Memorial Day whether to continue during the summer months.
Speaking of FREE Clinics.
The great folks who run our International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) league on Sunday mornings will be conducting our March FREE clinic on Sunday March 18th at 7am. That's right..7 AM!! Since the group meets the 1st and 2nd Sunday of each month at 7AM we thought that was the best time for the clinic too! A special thanks to the IDPA group for providing this awesome opportunity for anyone with an interest in IDPA to attend this clinic which will answer all your questions and satisfy your curiosity on this exciting shooting sport.
I am so excited to have Michael Janich teaching here at the end of March. Mike is the Host of Personal Defense TV on the Outdoor channel that airs every Wednesday evening. He will be teaching his TWO Day Martial Blade Concepts and Skills Progression seminar on March 31 and April 1st. (See below).
A special thanks to all of you for your patronage and support during the holiday season. We finished the month of December with a new record month in sales, new memberships sold, gift certificate sales, and range use.
TURNING HEADS... Take a look below at the new wrap on my truck. The first rule in advertising is to "Let them Know Who you Are and What You Do". After looking at this truck as I drive down the road can there be any doubt as to Who we are and What we do?

You may have noticed that our Advanced Carbine class that we teach at the Fernan outdoor range will be offered twice this year. This is because of you. This class has become so popular that we needed to add another offering. We call this an advanced class because it teaches advanced carbine techniques seldom offered at other schools.
As a reminder, I wanted to mention that the Basic Carbine is the prerequisite course for Advanced Carbine. Last year we had a number of students that could not get into the Advanced class because they did not complete the Basic course. Take advantage of the Basic class offerings and be ready for the Advanced classes in June and August. Advanced Carbine Class

I am very excited about the Member Fun Shoots...both with the number of participants and what we have been able to accomplish. We have started something new in that we are asking the participants to pick the topic for the upcoming month's Fun Shoot.
The February member Fun Shoot topic will be "Basic Techniques and Moving While Shooting". So if you are a member and want practice in these areas...show up and join the fun on Fri, Feb 17 at 5pm.

Center Target Sports continues to be a collection point for used cell phones and toiletries for the Post Falls Women's shelter (OASIS). Just bring in and leave with Peggy. They will also accept PJ's, robes, slippers and toiletry bags. If you're travelling and have checked luggage, collect all those unused bottles in your hotel bathroom and bring them back for us to donate to OASIS. Every little bit helps. Thank you.

AR Headquarters Up and Running!
PWS and BRC Leading the Way....
 | BRC Tan AR |
We are so excited to see the tremendous response to our AR Pro Shop "The AR Headquarters". We have made the decision to only carry reasonably priced higher end AR's. We looked hard and long before we decided on which manufacturers would be best suited for our customer base. The AR's we stock are at the top of the list with respect to quality, performance, service and durability.
Any gun store can offer you the DPMS, Bushmaster, and Olympic Arms class of AR's. We have decided not to stock these rifles as most of you have made it quite clear that you want more for your money. Stocking rifles from these two very high quality AR manufacturers, we feel we can best serve your needs.
We are so proud to announce the exclusive distributorship for the Eastern WA,
 | PWS Woodland |
North Idaho region of Black Rifle Company (BRC) rifles and accessories. With the addition of the BRC to our very popular Primary Weapons System (PWS) line of rifles we feel very confident in meeting all your AR needs. We can now offer AR's in 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, .338 Spector, .458 SOCOM, .500 Beowolf,.300AAC Blackout, 762x39 Russian, 5.45x39 Russian and of course the .223/5.56 Nato.
As you see, we are your AR Headquarters. Quality AR's do not have to cost an arm and a leg. Both these manufacturers are dedicated to producing quality firearms and accessories that everyone can afford and enjoy for many years to come.
In the next few weeks look for our new AR display and some very special new AR programs. |
MICHAEL JANICH HERE! A Very Special 2 Day Program Limited to Only 24 Students GREAT News... A few months ago I was teaching at TREXPO East in Washington DC. At that LE conference I met Michael Janich and we really hit it off. Like many of you I have read his books and of course seen him many times on Personal Defense TV on Wednesday nights on the Outdoor channel. I asked him if he would teach here at CTS. He does very few open seminars these days as his time is so limited. He agreed to try and fit in a class after his international training calendar was complete and we Win!!! Mike is one of the best (if not the best) knife fighting Instructor in the world. Many times we have been asked about offering a knife class here at CTS. My answer has always been "We will when we can get a very good instructor". Well, we have the BEST in Mike Janich. So here is your chance to participate in Michael's Two Day Seminar on March 31st and April 1st. The title of this training is called "Martial Blade Concepts Progressive Skills Seminar" and the cost is $225.00 before February 15th. After Feb 15th the cost will be $250.00. NEW Program Announced: "PIMP MY AR"
You have seen "Pimp my Ride" on TV, well now at CTS you can "Pimp Your AR!" Very similar to the TV show where owners of old beater cars have them transformed into the latest and greatest in both appearance and performance, you can now do the same to that AR you have had around the house for years.
 | TURN THIS Beater Into... |
Look at the picture to the left and see below how easily it can be transformed into a beautiful and functional rifle.
 | INTO THIS!!! |
We will stock the Upgrade kits that will allow you to make this beautiful transition from the basic to the show piece.
Below is just one of the CTS exclusive "Pimp My AR" upgrade kits. We will have a number of choices and products along with all the assistance and advice you need to make the changes you desire.

Cleaned and Polished Brass Now Available!
We have started to offer cleaned and polished brass as time permits. We will try to always have the more popular calibers available. However, based on the groups who use the range, the ammo they shoot, and our ability to get in after they leave to collect the brass we may not always have what you are looking for. If you have a specific caliber that you are looking for let us know and we will try to collect it for you.
The Furry is in stock. A 500 lumen flashlight you can hold in one hand or put in your shirt pocket. Just two years ago the thought of a 500 lumen flashlight that would run for 90 minutes let alone be small enough to put in your hand or small pocket would be unheard of.
Well, today it is a reality and quite a performer. I demonstrated it at the member fun shoot this month and it was met with more than a few oohs and aahs.
Are you a Glock Girl? If so, we have Glock Girl short sleeve T-Shirts in stock. This picture makes it look like Stephanie is wearing a long sleeve shirt but she is not. She has a black long sleeve shirt under the short sleeve Glock Girl T-shirt.
So there you go a fashion tip without even asking :-) I just realized, it is a pretty scary thing to have me giving any type of fashion advice... |

Monthly Training Tip!
Choosing a Concealed Carry Holster!
For all practical purposes, the holster should be considered a "part" of the firearm. The holster and related equipment go hand-in-hand with an effective self-defense capability. When choosing a holster for concealed carry, no expense or effort should be spared. Due to the fact that most concealed carry self-defense situations are reactive in nature, there will be very little time for the defender to waste in dealing with inadequate equipment, especially a holster that does not allow a smooth, fast draw.
So then consider this: Without the right holster, and not having the proper training and proficiency at using it, the owner may never have the opportunity to tell anyone that it did not work! You do not want to have to find out in an armed confrontation that your concealed carry holster was not the right one. It is for this reason and others that concealed carry holsters be selected based on the following:
PRIMARY SELECTION CRITERIA FOR CONCEALED CARRY HOLSTERS:
- A holster that works well with your style of dress. In some cases, this is one of the more important criteria. Concealment allows you the element of surprise and avoids the unfortunate or uncomfortable circumstances of accidental exposure
- Retention from both disarm attacks while engaged in a hand-to-hand confrontation and everyday usage, which could dislodge the gun from the holster.
- Protection of trigger group -trigger guard is covered by holster and the holster does not cause the safety or catch to disengage
- ACCESS-EASE AND SPEED OF DRAWING- This includes allowing for a complete, high grip on the handgun and a fairly straight line draw to the target and line of sight.
- COMFORT (a holster/gun combination that the shooter is comfortable with is one that they are more likely to carry and less likely to be in the way of other things)
- FIT AND FORM (a good holster is molded or formed to the specific handgun, and maintains this characteristic in the long term. This will have an effect on both retention and on access)
- QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP AND MATERIALS (this is where the buyer may see a wide variety of quality, among various manufacturers)
- EASE OF REHOLSTERING - A concealed carry holsters should allow rapid, one-handed, unassisted reholstering.
OTHER CRITERIA for concealed carry holsters, accessories, and carry positions will depend on the following:
- Needs of the owner: potential threat level, and function desired
- Priorities in terms of holster selection (from the criteria above) - concealability, comfort, ease and speed of access, retention, and of course, cost
- Clothing Preferred versus needed to maintain concealment and access.
- Weather/Climatic Influence and its affect on worn attire
- In some cases, the handgun owner may choose to change gun size based on the season and resultant attire changes. The handgun may have to be relocated on the body based on climate influences and attire. Every effort should be made to not downgrade the defensive capability.
Physical Limitations
- Women are confronted with anatomical considerations that differ from men when dealing with concealed carry of handguns. It is a fact that most handgun and accessory designs are based around the needs and anatomical priorities of men. For women, several considerations predominate and must be considered:
- Hand Size-smaller on most women than on men (grip size and trigger reach affected and handgun design will be a major consideration)
- Armpit to Hip Distance is shorter on most women than on men (holsters may need to be lower on the belt to allow proper drawstroke)
- Hips-wider on most women than on men, affecting rake and cant of holsters
- Body Size-for the person whose midsection or range of motion are limited, this will have a dramatic effect on concealed carry
- Physical Strength-some handgun and holster designs put a weaker person at a disadvantage. Although training and some techniques can help to remedy this, there are some designs that are more conducive to the weaker shooter.
- Gun size and weight versus all of the above
- Cost - Though the primary consideration of many, considering the importance of carrying a defensive handgun, and the variables surrounding deadly force confrontations, the proper equipment is one variable that the person can control in advance of the event.
