Welcome back to the Target Zone:

I can't believe it is October.  As  I write this issue I am reminded of how quickly time flies and that we will soon be celebrating our 7th year in business.  On a personal note, in a few weeks Peggy and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary.  Talk about time flying!!

The fall season brings an increase in activity at CTS.  Stephanie and Ken along with the entire staff are well into the process of getting the facility ready for all of you.    In addition to an increase in the activity level, many have recognized the increase in inventory both in quantity and selection.  We continue to tweak our inventory to meet your needs.  It is all about providing items you need and are not widely available.

We are especially excited about all we have accomplished with our AR rifles and Tactical Gear sections.   From the addition of the PWS rifles (see article below) to the largest selection of tactical gear and First Aid Trauma gear.  If you need these items... we have them.

Stephanie Soars to New Heights!!

steph flag

Here is a picture of Stephanie making sure Old Glory proudly waves above the CTS facility.  The heavy winds recently broke our flag rope and it needed to be replaced.  As you all know, there has been a lot of weight lost around here among the staff, however when it came to leaning the ladder against the 25 foot flag pole...well you can see for yourself.

Stephanie

In the News Again!!

steph moose

Talk about getting attention.  Stephanie rightfully deserves it again.  Pictured below is her Bull Moose taken on Monday Oct 10th.  She worked hard for this beautiful moose as they seem to be a lot more scarce this year than last year when her husband bagged his moose in the same Idaho hunting unit.  Congrats Stephanie... you make us all very proud.

FREE Youth Hunter Seminars...

Huge Success !!

 lasershot

Our new video simulation system is here.
We are excited about how this equipment will be integrated into our extensive  training programs.  This system will have a positive impact on just about every training course we offer, from basic shooting to the most advanced defensive scenarios imaginable.

So far we have conducted 4 new FREE "Hunter Ethics, Safety, and Animal Anatomy Seminars".  This program is designed to reinforce or introduce new shooters to all the concepts and skills taught in the various hunter safety programs available. This program is open to age 10 and above.

We have full rosters and a waiting list for each of the remaining seminars.  Thanks to everyone for making these seminars a phenomenal success.

Accepting Resumes

We were recently left with an opening when Chris left the CTS family for a full time job. We have had great success in the past by soliciting resumes for part time employment from our patrons. We are again asking any of you who are interested in becoming part of our team to submit a resume. CCW permit required.

 A Special Thanks...

A Special Thanks... Last month a concerned student/member and his wife (also a student/member) recognized the fact that many women in the Post Falls area have a need for additional personal protection training. Knowing the effectiveness of Peggy's "Refuse To be a Victim" (RTBAV) class this couple graciously donated $100.00 to the OASIS woman's program of the Post Falls police dept.   We are excited to report that 5 woman were able to attend our last RTBAV class due to the tremendous concern, compassion and generosity of this special couple. You know who you are...and we thank you so very much.

As you know 100% of our tuition for this class (RTBAV) is donated to the OASIS program. That means that this gift was actually a double win for the OASIS program.

Continuing Education important to CTS...

Continuing Education...  ed rogersSounds like I am trying to justify my expense report to a government accounting agency or the IRS. Fortunately, since I own the business and am married to the bookkeeper that is not the case. Rather, my continuing education is critical to the programs I teach here and around the country.
Whether my students are civilians or armed professionals, they are all deserving of the most up to date cutting edge information available.

Cutting edge training taught by well respected tactical/defensive instructors is not inexpensive and certainly not often offered in our area. To ensure that I am able to perform to someone else's standard and am also able to keep my course content fresh and realistic for my students we justify the expense.

A great example of this is a recent couple of classes I took under the instruction of Pat Rogers. Not to be confused with Bill Rogers of the Atlanta, GA area. There is certainly no lack of recognition when it comes to Pat in the armed professional world. He is the very respected and dedicated teacher of the "art of the gun". Pat is all about gun fighting period! After spending 5 days with him it became very clear to me that we share the same opinion about winning gun fights not just surviving them.

People often ask me why I continue to take classes after more than 30 years of teaching firearms. My answer is an easy one. I learn every day, from instructors like Pat Rogers, Bill Rogers, John Farnam, Massad Ayoob, Rob Pincus, etc, from fellow armed professionals and certainly from my students. We must never stop learning or pushing ourselves out of those nasty training comfort zones.

CTS is a Chief's sponsorchiefs promo

Many of you know, the Santos family is a hockey family. Peggy and I love the Spokane Chiefs. So it seemed only fitting that we sponsor the team in some small way this year. Here is a picture of the on ice promotion that we are sponsoring.

Please let us know if you attend a Chiefs game and see the promotion. It would be nice to know what you think of the promo as we try to reach new customers in the region.  We are also the sponsors of the "shots on goal" and any "shoot out" that might occur.

OC (Pepper Spray) Class offered November 2nd

 sabre

OC class is one of our seldom offered classes.  That should not reflect on the appropriateness or effectiveness of OC spray as a defensive tool.  In fact, I carry it as a less than lethal option every day.  It is appropriate for people who carry a firearm as well as those who would rather not.

This 3 hour course will explain pepper spray history, chemicals in use today and their differences, reactions to OC, Stream vs. Spray vs. Fogger deployment types, Brand selection, Strength/Heat determination, and the Use of Force Model. Students will learn and demonstrate: drawing, holding, engaging, verbalizing and moving with an OC unit; demonstrate in role-play the proper techniques of positioning and using OC sprays; Demonstrate accurate spray techniques; and explain proper decontamination techniques.

Monthly Training Tip! ipsc

Competitive Shooters Vs. Defensive Training...

They say timing is everything. Today, I agree. As I was deciding what to write about for this Monthly Training Tip I received a DTI Quip from one of my most respected mentors John Farnam. John wrote about a recent rifle course he taught which was made up of defensive minded shooters and shooters from the competitive sport shooting world.   I have also witnessed in my defensive classes many of the issues and or traits that John discussed. So, topic for this column dilemma...SOLVED!

Let me first make it clear that I do believe there are many positives to be gained by participating in shooting sports. You have the shear thrill of the competition, increased interaction with your equipment, shooting under some level of stress and shooting scenarios out of your control just to mention a few. The focus of my comments today will be directed more to the negative elements that we need to be aware of.

As more and more competitive shooters become interested in defensive shooting I have noticed the ability to hit the target ratio go up among my classes. You might say, "That's a good thing". Not necessarily.  I believe with all my being that your ability to manipulate your firearm and understand the dynamics of a lethal encounter is critical to your ability to win the fight.

As an example, sport shooters will often immediately drop their firearm after shooting to evaluate the success or failure of their shot placement (score). This very bad technique in a real gunfight could get you killed. Oh in a real fight I would never do that you say... I say yes you will. You will fight as you train. Let's look at just a few of the things wrong with this behavior. First of all when the firearm is lowered to look at your shot placement, you are most often standing still, looking at the target and not following the target (attacker) to the ground or looking for additional threats, you are more than likely emotionally starting to relax and not at the peak of your mental game. Worst yet you have probably moved your trigger finger to the index position before you have confirmed that the attacker is truly neutralized.

Training must incorporate real world possibilities or we are training to fail. When we teach or train under repetitive courses of fire we start to form bad habits. These habits lead to an inability of the student to be flexible. Lethal encounters are dynamic, chaotic, quick, often in diminished light, and never predictable.

We never know what to expect from any lethal encounter and it's absolutely unrealistic to think that we should. Some of the ways I incorporate realistic performance training is through the manipulations we teach and require in all circumstances. For instance, I had a patron contact me in my office informing me there was "a crazy guy" shooting in the lane next to her. Her interpretation that this guy was "crazy" was due to the fact that after shooting his target he brought the gun close in to his body and looked in all directions before holstering. I immediately went to investigate. What I found was one of my most advanced students doing as he has been trained. He was shooting his target, following it to the ground, making sure it was neutralized, then coming to the compressed high ready, doing a 360 degree scan, tactically reloading and then reluctantly re-holstering.

Realistic training must also not allow for the standard response to a threat of 2 rounds. The two round response is not acceptable. In our defensive classes we use terms that are sometimes confusing with respect to rounds fired at the target. These terms will differ between instructors but for the most part they are widely accepted or at least understood. Below is an attempt to clarify the most often used round count terms.

  • Standard Response - Two shots on target
  • Non Standard Response - Any number of shots (shooter choice) between 3 and 9 shots
  • Double Tap - One shot picture and two rounds fired quickly
  • Controlled Pair - Two shots fired with a good sight picture established for each shot

We also need to practice the things we don't do well. This takes discipline. We always like to feel good about ourselves or more specifically our performance. This often leads to a lack of support hand shooting, moving while shooting, and one handed manipulation practice. These areas are normally challenging to a lot of us...so we don't practice them. The reverse should be the case. We need to incorporate them into our training. In a recent Blog about my training classes by an unknown student, the student wrote, "Great class, but if you take a class from Ed Santos, you better know how to shoot with your support hand". I did not see this as a criticism, but as a complement.

We must not fear failure in training. This is the only way we will identify our weaknesses and gain the insight to adjust our training practices to allow for the greatest potential for the ultimate victory. John Farnam has said many times, "We train to impress our enemies not our friends". I believe that too often the opposite is the case.

Train hard, train with a purpose, train realistically, and push yourself...then the real learning takes place.

Be Safe......
