Welcome back to the Target Zone:

I hope all of you are enjoying these beautiful North Idaho days we have been experiencing.  I can say that thanks to our awesome staff, over the last few weeks, I have finally been able to reduce my "honey do" list around the house.

When I sat down to write this email I thought, 'this will be quick...it is summertime and there is not much to write about'.  WRONG... Oh my gosh, we have so much happening at CTS.  I will do my best to keep this short and informative.

There is so much to be excited about, from the awesome weight loss that much of the staff is experiencing, to the addition of the best piston AR rifle line in the country, to the stocking of a comprehensive line of tactical gear, to John Farnam returning, to the most complete selection of trauma response supplies in the area and much more.

We are contemplating a Facebook page and all the associated activity for Center Target Sports.  We have avoided this as we are not well versed in the Facebook culture.  However, it seems to be the future.  If you think we'd be wise to start a Facebook page or any of you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact Peggy at peggy@centertargetsports.com

Don't forget that our entire CTS family is here to help you in any way we can.  If you have questions about gear, tactics, techniques or classes, don't hesitate to ask us.  We are  here for and because of you.  It has always been our goal to develop long term relationships with all of you.

Gun magazines and books can only go so far with regard to your education or understanding of what can often be more complicated than one might think.  Our staff has a wealth of knowledge about the things we do here.  Take advantage of this expertise as it is free and offered with no strings attached.

Laser Simulation System is on its way.

lasershot

We have received the first disbursement of our Grant and have ordered our new Laser Simulation's system. This system will have a positive impact on just about every training program we have. From basic shooting to the most advanced defensive scenarios imaginable. We are particularly excited about our new FREE to children "Hunter Ethics, Safety, and Animal Anatomy Seminars" that will be held starting in September. (see the class schedule below)

In September we will be offering a program that is designed to reinforce or introduce new shooters to all the concepts and skills taught in the various hunter safety programs available. This program is open to all ages. For participants under the age of 16 it will be FREE. Participants will participate in a very realistic video hunting scenario. Armed with a rifle they will decide which animal, where to aim, take the shot and then the entire scenario will be evaluated with the participant for the purposes of reinforcing safe ethical hunting practices.

With this system the skeletal structure and vital organs can be made visible so the participant can determine if they made the appropriate shot which would result in an ethical harvesting of the animal.

Parents, this is a great opportunity to get your young or inexperienced hunters some very realistic hunting exposure. This system is very similar to what the pilots use to learn to fly. We will be offering these seminars throughout the year but will increase the frequency up to and throughout the hunting season.   Hope to see you on the hunt!\

        -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

pfpdThis morning the Post Falls Police Department honored CTS for our ongoing support of their Victim Services Unit.  Since 2005 through our "Refuse to be a Victim" classes we have donated $6700 to the O.A.S.I.S. program.  We were very humbled and appreciative of the recognition.  However, our efforts are so miniscule in comparison to the great work done by not only the Victim Services Unit but the entire Post Falls Police department.

As you know, I teach in police departments and at law enforcement conferences across the country.  I can honestly say that I would put our local PD up against any department I have ever worked with.  The professionalism and dedication exemplified by these men in woman is something we should all be proud of.  Please take the time to help and support the PFPD whenever possible.

A Little Less Weight Around Here...weight loss

Many of you have noticed and we thank you for all your comments.  For those of you who have not been in lately, I am referring to the weight loss and general overall improvement of our health here at CTS.  Since starting a "FOR FUN" weight loss challenge approximately 8 weeks ago, 7 employees participated and have lost a combined weight of over 125lbs.  (Cam actually won the prize for highest percentage weight loss.)

Two participants (Kelly and Ed) have decided to continue the contest to shed the unnecessary weight they have been carrying around for too long.  They have both set goals and established healthy and fun checks and balances (talking trash to each other) to help each stay the course.  Ed's personal goal is to lose a total of 70lbs.  He is more than halfway there and with any luck should see his  goal weight by the end of the year.

Thanks again to all of you for your support and concern.  A special thank you to my staff for caring enough to even come up with the weight loss contest in the first place.  To spend time with this CTS team is truly an honor and a privilege.

MEMBER ONLY FUN SHOOTS...

Moving the "member only" FUN shoots from Sunday mornings to 5pm on a weekday has been a tremendous success.  The comments we have received from the participants and the increase in members who take advantage of this free event is proof enough for us.  So the weekday Fun shoots are here to stay.

The August fun shoot will involve moving and shooting and will require the participants to utilize many of the skills and techniques practiced in previous fun shoot events.  Do you think you can maneuver through the airplane fuselage and take out the bad guys without hitting a passenger?  Well, show up on Aug 16th at 5pm and find out.

See you then...

Remember these Member Fun Shoots are just that...FOR FUN!...they are not a competition and will teach you some new skills....it's also a great time to spend time with Ed and ask questions.

AR Armorer Course - August 5th and 6th

Register Now as this class will Sell Out!

It is Back...  This class had 5 people signed up for it before we even knew the date we would offer it.  Limited to 12 students, the popularity of this course speaks for itself.  This is the most comprehensive AR Armorer training available anywhere.  If you have ever wanted to know and understand this very popular weapons system, this is the class for you.

armorEach student will  assemble and disassemble the AR rifles we provide many times during these two full days.  In fact, when you begin the class we will issue you an AR rifle that is in ziplock sandwich bags.  That's right the AR we provide you is completely disassembled when we start the class.  You will completely assemble the lower receiver and then move on to the upper receiver.  No part of this rifle will go untouched.

Pictured on the left is master gunsmith "Gio" evaluating the students assembly skills.

All students of this class will have an opportunity to purchase AR components and AR specific tools at discounted prices.

5 Day

Comprehensive Handgun Course

firing lineI guess the word is out as we are overwhelmed by requests for another 5 Day Comprehensive HG class.  The last two classes have sold out and a few of you have asked me to up the number of students to 20 from 10.  I really can't do that and keep the integrity of the class and expect the subsequent results this class has demonstrated.

As I write this newsletter, Ken has 6 or 7 names of people who want to register for this next class offered September 19th-23rd.  If improving your shooting skills is what you want to do, this is the class for you.  Every student in the last class improved their score by over 100 points by the end of the class.  On a 300 point max score that is a significant improvement.  I am most proud of this course as it is designed to improve all shooters regardless of your skill level.

Monthly Training Tip!

They Are Not Standing Still...

The Department of Justice statistics state the average civilian gun encounter is from a distance of 0 to 6 feet, typically in diminished light. What they don't state is that they are seldom experienced without movement. So it seems very logical that I write about the ENGAGEMENT OF MOVING ASSAILANTS AT CLOSE RANGE (15 YDS OR LESS).

Any concealed carry holder should be prepared for the fact that any and all opponents may be moving, or more than likely will be once the shooting starts. This can even more complicate our ability to defend ourselves with a firearm, especially a handgun, and make appropiate decisions that could improve your ability to win the fight. Our training for confrontations should reflect the need for engagement of a moving assailant. This month's training tip will address hitting with small arms at closer range (15 yards or less).

FACTORS AFFECTING THE MOVING ENGAGEMENT

There are many factors affecting our ability to put effective rounds on the threat. First we can't lose sight of the statistical reality of a zero to 6' encounter. The opponent may be turned sideways (especially if moving laterally,) so their amount of exposure is less (a person is usually 9-14 inches thick when viewed from the side.) The combination of side profile and movement along with swinging arms will make the target appear narrower that they are.

The close position of the attacker may require you to utilize short range movement, which can greatly affect your stance and upper body/arm positioning while tracking with the target. If you are behind cover your range of motion will more than likely be limited in tracking, unless you are exposed too, or the opponent is moving farther out into your field of view.

You may not be alone or may be confronted by a multiple opponent scenario. The presence of bystanders and having an adequate backstop can be a potential problem. As the assailant moves, a bystander or non-deadly force actor may quickly get in the way of your muzzle. How about an assailant moving among others who are threatening, but who do not necessarily justify shooting?

The combination of varying levels and distances of threats, difficulty in making rapid and multiple threat ID, our ability or inability to guarantee every shot as a hit, and the short time and space that we may have to do all of this exemplify the potentially dynamic and challenging nature of a gunfight. The general rule of "shoot-look-shoot" certainly may apply as a moving opponent may immediately cause you to lose track of the status of other opponents, as well as bystanders. How about shooting an opponent who is moving away. If they are still armed and continue to shoot and/or threaten you with a firearm, then be prepared to keep shooting. If they are moving away and no longer possess a deadly force tool, this may present itself as a situation where firing may not be justified.

This of course, depends upon the circumstances, particularly, if you are still in jeopardy at that point.   Just keep in mind, if they are moving and shooting and you are standing still, who is easier to hit? In complicated situations like these, sound tactics, such as spontaneous use of movement and cover, may be applicable.

In general, exposure time may be very short, especially when in a building or other enclosed structure, such as a parking garage. So there will be little time for anything but quick reactions and getting the gun on target rapidly.

Let's talk about some techniques that may help us win the fight. Leads-There should be no need for a lead when engaging a moving assailant at close range. Given the average range of most confrontations, a projectile fired from most centerfire handguns travels in excess of 800 feet per second. At these velocities and higher, there is no need to lead at distances (15 yards and less) as the bullet covers that distance much faster than any human (particularly the vital areas) can move.

The reason that most shooters tend to "trail" the target, is due not to target speed or lack of a lead, but lack of proper follow-through during the shot process (by stopping the swing of their gun while firing.) In some cases, though, a small lead of a few inches, or keeping the front sight just inside of the leading edge of the moving opponent's chest may be useful (but not a replacement for sound fundamentals.)

Fundamentals Can Help...

Square the body with the target, "driving" the gun with the target, firing and moving your gun with target as it moves. Fire until the threat stops, becomes incapacitated or until they disappear from view.

The sight picture is the key, especially on a moving or less exposed target. Keep the front sight on the intended area of impact. Take a defensive class with me and you will learn firsthand that Pointed shooting is not as effective in a moving engagement as you might think. So try to index or focus the front of your gun on the target. A well practiced shooter may be able to index the gun on target very well, and possibly achieve hits without using the sights. In either case, follow-through is the key to hitting the mover.

Keep the trigger moving when you are firing and do not stop your tracking of the target. Stance and body position can be a key factor. A flexible lower body and slightly forward upper body are necessary. Continue to square the body with the threat and turret or pivot as you drive the gun with the opponent. To my defensive students - does the term "Dynamic Grip" ring a bell?

Oh!! Don't forget to get to cover as quickly as possible, as you will more than likely be exposed.

Be Safe......
