Welcome back to the Target Zone:
WOW! Can you believe this is the 4th of July weekend? Where has this year gone? Well, I have lost track of time to the point that June came and went without me sending out a newsletter. That is why this newsletter is a double issue covering both June and July. Sorry...
Last weekend we had a great day at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club. It was our annual trek to this awesome facility to teach my Advanced Carbine class. It was the first time in three years that we did not get rained on.

The picture to the left shows the 16 students who attended the class shooting their rifles one handed. I know that brought a smile to a number of you pistol students as you can see my philosophy of having the ability to shoot and manipulate your firearm with both hands includes the rifle. Yes, that's right. The students shot, loaded, cleared malfunctions and much more with both hands and one handed as well.
Everyone including the re-takes were excited about the new format and the changes we have included in the Advanced Carbine class. We have modified our Basic Carbine class as well so don't hesitate to re-take the basic class as you will see a significant difference from the last time you took it.
_________________________________________________________
Just a reminder...if you're signed up for a class at Center Target Sports, please make sure you check the website/in house flyer/or call a staff member to make sure you have all the required equipment for the class. When you wait until the class begins to buy a holster or ammo, you hold up the entire class and everyone gets frustrated. Thank you.

A special thank you to Kelly. I know many of you appreciate all that Kelly does for you when you come into our facility. We are so lucky to have her as a member of our team.
What most of you don't know is she is an awesome task oriented employee. In fact, in the last few months, she wrote a Grant (Video Simulation System) request for us. Last week we were notified that we received the grant. Great job Kelly!!
This new state-of-the-art simulation system will allow us to improve and expand every facet of our training programs. From the handgun familiarity classes to the most advanced defensive/tactical classes we will be able to raise the bar and challenge students like never before.
Look for a FREE youth hunters "Test Your Skills" program that we will be offering as soon as we receive the equipment. This simulation system will allow us to put shooters/hunters through a virtual hunt scenario. After the shot is taken we will be able to review and see the actual shot impact and we will be able to verify a hit or miss to vital areas and reinforce ethical hunting practices.
This is just one way we intend to use the simulator and also provide a very important service to our community. These "Test your Skills" seminars will be free to all youth hunters under the age of 16.

New Items Arriving Daily...
Tactical Gear.. Tactical Gear.. Tactical Gear..
Because of your requests we have established some exciting new relationships with some of the top tactical gear manufacturers in the country. We continue to seek out US manufacturers whenever possible.
Viking Tactical is one of the companies we are very excited about. From the way their tactical slings are flying off our shelves, I'd say you all are excited as well. I do have to admit they have developed the best two point sling I have ever seen. They have solved all the negative things I hated about the typical two point sling. So if you are in the market for a very versatile sling, give them a try. We are also stocking their battle belt, tactical gloves, weapons light mounts and much more.
Tactical Tailor is a Northwest company that makes exceptional gear. We have sold their products in the past and have special ordered from them for years. Now we are stocking a much larger selection of their gear.
Personal Protective Systems is another Northwest company that we are excited to be associated with. Bar none, they make the Very Best plate carriers I have ever seen. Their equipment is designed by guys who wear it in the real world with their life on the line everyday. We will stock two models of carriers both of which are capable of holding hard plates or soft body armor.
NEW SUMMER STYLES AND COLORS ARE HERE!
The Woolrich truck has arrived and they left behind the New summer colors of concealed carry specific shirts. Don't miss this opportunity to pick up a comfortable, functional, and stylish shirt that is designed to accommodate your concealed carry needs.
The shirts feature a magnetic fake button on the front bottom and a Velcro "Quick Release" side seam both allowing quick access to your firearm. These shirts are the best we have been able to find in the marketplace and I guess we would expect no less from a company like Woolrich. |
I Need a Sling... Which Sling? I need a Sling... Which Sling?

One of the most requested items in our store is a sling. However, more time than not the customer knows they need a sling but they have no idea which one they want. The confusion is not without reason or justification.
As the popularity of the AR platform has grown, there has been a proliferation of tactical slings as well as techniques to go with them. There are wide variances in terms of design features, intended applications, and quality, and this is an accessory that is often overlooked or underused. In some cases, the results of not having the right sling could be unfortunate or even catastrophic. Considering the types of situations that would call for use of the tactical shoulder mounted firearm, this is an area worth investigating. What follows are helpful considerations and particulars on slings.
Justifications and Applications for a sling on an AR or special purpose shoulder weapon include all or most of the following:
(1) Retention. The gun is less likely to be pulled away from or turned upon shooter. Some slings can also be combined with specific retention techniques to maximize their use.
(2) Transition Being able to rapidly transition from the shoulder weapon to the handgun while under fire is an extremely applicable skill. In many cases, the operator can access their handgun faster than they could clear many forms of stoppages or perform a reload, should that situation occur. Although there are many methods for transitioning without slings, there are even better ones that involve slings. Having the right length and type of sling is integral to the transition process
(3) Hands-Free Use In the event that an additional task must occur needing both hands, such as having to move in to handcuff, performing an extraction, when mounted on an ATV, motorcycle, horse, aircraft, or watercraft, and other situations. At a minimum, the sling should allow for the operator to maintain control of the firearm while performing another task with both hands.
(4) Shooting Support and Specialized Shooting Techniques Although many "2 point slings" allow for this, now some "wraparound" tactical slings do this and more. But, in many cases, a sling that can be rapidly wrapped to add support can be a decisive factor in making the shot.
(5) Alternative Carry Modes The sling may allow for other methods of carry for specialty situations (such as motorcycle, ATV, etc). Some personnel prefer to have ambidextrous capability. While others may prefer to carry the shoulder arm in some special manner tailored to their operational needs. There are now slings on the market to fit virtually every need.
Here are some recommendations in terms of features for a suitable sling:
Solid Hardware and Mounting Features.
Adjustable. Since no two operators are the same size, neither should be the sling. In addition, consider that when changing seasons and clothing, and when wearing soft versus hard body armor, the sling length may need to change. Some multi-purpose slings allow for infinite adjustability while others were not made for personnel wearing gear.
Low Noise. This can be a major consideration for a number of armed professionals. It is best to start out with a low noise system. A combination of tape and/or rubber bands may aid in this process.
Single Point, Two Point, Three Point, which one is best?
They all have their benefits and detractions. Make your decision on what your mission requirements are. Is varmit hunting your primary use of the rifle? How about CQB or 3 Gun? You see, each discipline has its unique requirements and potential for the sling system you choose.
Years ago I was an advocate for the 3 point sling. For the last few years I have been using a single point sling. Lately I have been testing the two point sling made by Viking Tactical. I have never been a fan of the 2 point sling primarily because of the many restrictions that are part and parcel to the 2 point design. However, Viking has re-engineered the restrictions out of their design. So the simplicity of the two point without the restrictions make it a very attractive choice for many people. I am really becoming a fan of the Viking! Thanks Tom :-)
Keep in mind that each has their strengths and weaknesses and you should always choose what suits your needs best. Beware of ads that make great claims and slings that are either too complicated or imitations of better slings. Also give consideration to both who designed the sling and who is making it. If either have a reputation for tactical experience or quality manufacture, you can bet that they have "done their homework" and are offering something that has been thoroughly tested and evaluated.
Cost and Justifying a Sling Purchase-this is a predominant factor in purchases, and most slings vary in price from $20-80. Some of the better ones are well over $35. But many personnel who have used the better slings can attest to the fact that the advantages and applications offered by these certainly justify themselves, and that a tactical sling is certainly needed by more personnel than the mere "rifle strap" so commonly affixed to many AR rifles and other tactical firearms out there. Most personnel with these better products would agree, that they can get more out of their shoulder mounted weapon and they have more options available to them operationally.
Finally, make sure the sling will function as designed and in the variety of circumstances that you could encounter. If possible, use it during a course and during all training sessions. And locate personnel who have been using the sling to find out how it has worked for them. The moment you find yourself in a serious situation is not the time to find out that a piece of gear does not work. Test what you are buying thoroughly. As the saying goes, "it is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."
Well maybe. |
