Welcome back to the Target Zone:

WOW... Best Range in the USA!!

Thank you all for the hundreds of congratulatory emails, phone calls and gifts concerning our selection by SHOT Business magazine as BEST Range in the USA.   As you know Peggy and I as well as our entire staff were humbled and proud to be recognized by such an honor.

I must say that this honor as well as any others we may receive would not be possible without the phenomenal support we receive from all our members and patrons.  In Fact, another National Award we have received since the SHOT award and as of yet not announced is the GSSF award.

That's right, Center Target Sports was picked by the GSSF division of Glock, Inc. as the BEST Indoor range in the USA.  Especially exciting to us is that this award is the result of our patrons writing in to Glock to sing our praises.

Matt Chen Will Be Here!!

Matt is our regional GLOCK Representative and he will be here During The February 19th GSSF Match between 9am and 2pm.  Bring in your Glock pistol and have Matt inspect and replace any necessary parts for FREE.  That's right he will look at and inspect your firearm and answer any questions you may have about your firearm.glock

He will also have with him every model Glock pistol for you to examine and test fire.  We will have special pricing incentives on any Glock pistol sold while Matt is here.  Don't miss this opportunity to talk directly to a Glock representative.

REMINDER:  Shooters under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent in order to shoot a handgun.  Shooters between the ages of 18 and 21 may shoot a rifle without a parent or guardian present.  Federal law limits the sale of handgun ammunition to shooters over the age of 21. Please don't ask us to break the law and risk our license.

Member Lane Reservations

Just a reminder.  Members are able to call ahead and reserve a shooting lane for one hour per day based on availability.  We recognize that due to the tremendous popularity of our training programs we sometimes have the tactical bay tied up limiting access to all 15 lanes.  Rest assured we are working to limit these bottlenecks through creative class scheduling.

In an effort to guarantee our members access to a shooting lane, we are dedicating two lanes in the fixed bay to member only reservations.  This is how it will work.  These lanes will be open to any walk in shooter if no reservations exist when the walk in shooter is requesting access.  If a member wishes to reserve a lane for a specific hour and no one else has reserved one of the two member lanes for that time, they will be given the reservation.  Any walk in shooter prior to the reserved time will be allowed to shoot on the open lane with the understanding that they may be asked to vacate the lane at the time of the arrival of the member with a reservation.

Members will be allowed a 5 minute grace period for late arrival.  Reservations will be forfeited after that time.  Members who no-show for 3 reservations within a one year period will forfeit their right to make reservations.  All reservations must be made by contacting a staff member in person or by phone.  We will not take phone messages or emails for reservations.  Please have your member number ready.  Reservations can only be made 48 hours in advance.

A special thank you to Bob and Pat Crossman of Kickers catering. Peggy and I recently purchased a donated catered meal that Kickers offered at a Post Falls charity auction.  Wow, what a meal!  They did a great job and everyone enjoyed their delicious homemade food.  If you ever need catering, give them a try.

 SILENCERS In Stock...sparrow

Many of you have asked for us to debunk the myths of silencer ownership and the purchase procedures.  I am happy to report that we have not only removed the red tape in the purchase process but we are now stocking 22 cal and .223 silencers.

We are stocking Sparrow 22 cal and Advanced Armament .223 silencers.  The purchase process is very simple.  You come in and purchase the silencer of your choice.  We will fill out the appropriate paperwork.  You take the paperwork to the Sheriff for his signature and also get 2 NFA fingerprint cards completed.  You then bring the packet back to us and we will mail it off for approval.  We will retain the silencer until we receive the approved paperwork back from ATF.  When we receive the approval we will call you to pick up your silencer and then you are on your way to a new shooting experience.

FREE Clinic In February:

Our February FREE clinic promises to be enlightening.husband wife

HUSBAND and WIFE Team Defense.  Imagine you are like the couple pictured to the right.  You're in a public place having a cup of coffee and a pastry.  Shots ring out...What do you do?  Where do you go?  Do you get involved?

The Feb clinic will be all about couples or just friends for that matter defending themselves or the innocent.  After all, your choices in defense are so different based on how may of you there are or how each member of your group is armed or not armed.

For instance, a couple where both parties are armed with a firearm will choose tactics very differently from a couple that only one member is armed.  This is the essence of the Feb FREE clinic.  I promise there will be something for you to consider/think about regardless of your couple status.

Come join us on Tuesday, Feb 15 at 6pm for a very educational FREE clinic.  Register early please.

FREE Clinic In March:

There will not be a free Clinic in March as we're working on putting together a big event in April....more to follow...still getting all our commitments lined up.

Miscellaneous STUFF!!

Just a few last minute items.  We are in need of a Button Maker system.  Preferably the 2.25 size buttons. We would like to use these buttons for our staff to wear and alert you of special items of interest and policy changes or sales etc...

If you have or know of someone who has a button machine that is gathering dust, we would be very interested in purchasing it.  Please contact Stephanie at 208-773-2331 or email Peggy at Peggy@centertargetsports.com.

New Special Order Policy...

Effective immediately a 50% deposit will be necessary on all special orders.  We have resisted this option up until now, however, so far this year we have brought in many items costing hundreds of dollars only to be told that the customer no longer wants or needs the item and we're left holding bag so to speak.  Some special orders have been on our shelf for months before the customer comes in to pick the item up despite multiple calls from our staff.

We hope you understand.  We have no problem special ordering what you need but we can't keep bringing in items and then never completing the transaction.

SENIORS and MILITARY - New PUNCH CARD!

You asked for it...we got it!  Effective immediately we now have a new punch card for our seniors and active or retired military patrons.  The punch card is good for 5 visits at a cost of $55.00 and then you get one visit free.  Please ask our staff for the Military or Senior punch card if you qualify and remember punch cards can be shared with someone of the same status.

Cam is the MAN...

We know many of you rely on Cam's expert gunsmithing abilities.  We are also aware of his enormous skills and as such we have Cam teach our FREE firearm orientation classes.  Lately, however, many patrons are interrupting him when he is teaching a class in the class room.  We ask that you kindly wait until he is finished with his class before you solicit his help.

His classes are scheduled in advance and are for a specific time and duration.  If needed you may ask our staff when Cam will be available and return at that time.  I have instructed Cam to not disrupt his class for customers that interrupt him when presenting.  I hope you understand the courtesy and would expect the same response if you were the person in the class trying to maintain a very specific train of thought without interruption.  Thanks...

New Credit Card Minimum!

Effective immediately we have established a new credit card minimum purchase of $10.00.  You would not believe the volume of credit card transactions we process each month.  Some patrons want to charge two 25 cent targets on their credit card.  The processing cost of the transaction costs us more than that.  Again, I hope you understand.  We are committed to doing everything possible to keep our overhead down so we can keep the shooting affordable for everyone.  Thanks for your support and understanding.

Dry Practice - Not Dry Fire and the Benefit of Mixing In Some Dummy Round Drills

Last week I completed another 5 day comprehensive handgun class.  One student in particular had a very difficult time concurring a TRIGGER PRESS ISSUE.  This is a subject I believe deserves another look.  I have written about  Dry Fire practice over the years.  In an effort to better explain the intent of the process, I am now calling what was once known as dry fire, DRY PRACTICE since the gun never actually fires.

Many people get tremendous benefit from Dry Practice however, some people with severe trigger issues do not see much improvement with dry practice alone.  For those unique challenging students I have had great success by combining Dry Practice and Dummy round drills.

First let's explain why I believe this combination has proven to be so successful.  It comes down to our subconscious quickly learning that in dry practice there is NO recoil to deal with.  When this happens the shooter is not gaining much in the way of learning recoil management during dry Practice drills.  So we need to mix in the Dummy round drills to keep the subconscious guessing.

I will describe the dummy round drills first then the proper way to Dry Practice (DP).  The most obvious fact is that Dummy Round (DR) drills must take place on the range as live fire is taking place.  The first step is to set up your Dummy rounds in the magazine or cylinder.  You can have a partner disperse the dummy rounds indiscriminately throughout the magazine.  If you are alone, just load some dummy rounds in random order in multiple magazines.  Mix up the magazines and you will have no idea when a dummy round may be in the chamber.

When you have your magazines set up then go to the firing line, take up a good position and start shooting for accuracy.  In other words with the target at 15 - 20 feet away try to shoot all the rounds in the same hole.  When the hammer falls on a dummy round in the chamber the gun should not move.  If you jerked the trigger and the gun moved on the dummy round you can bet the gun moved and the trigger was jerked on the live round shot and your target will reflect the same.  In order for this to work or for you to get the maximum benefit from the drill, as soon as you recognize what happened, immediately praise yourself by saying "That's What It Feels Like" or criticize yourself by saying "That was BAD".  This immediate recognition and praise or criticism will have a dynamic effect on your performance.

Now let's look at Dry Practice done properly.  I believe that dry practice drills are one of the most effective practice techniques you can do to improve your shooting skills.  I am talking "Biggest Bang for Your Buck" here, no pun intended...well maybe. The benefits are tremendous but if done recklessly or if safety is taken for granted the hazards can be tremendous as well.

First let's talk about dry practice and the damage to your gun concerns.  I would not recommend dry practice with any 22 cal firearm.  The firing pin on the 22 cal is located on the rim, and therefore the firing pin could be damaged when allowed to strike the hardened steel area surrounding the chamber that is normally protected by the soft cartridge rim.   As for center fire handguns, don't worry about dry firing unless you have an old collectable classic piece that has monetary or sentimental value.  My primary center fire handguns all have thousands of dry practice cycles through them without any damage to them.

Safety must be the primary concern.   I never dry practice in the same room with real ammunition.  I always dry practice when I am alone for maximum concentration.  Below are the Safety Procedures I follow every time I begin a dry practice session:

  • Establish a practice area and make sure it is free of any live ammunition.
  • Try to insure your privacy when selecting a practice area.  Possibly lock a door or post the area with a no ammunition allowed sign.
  • Clear your firearm and all magazines of live ammunition.
  • Establish an appropriate backstop for the caliber firearm in use.
  • Double and triple check that your firearm is clear and safe.

As you begin to practice, make sure all your movements are realistic.  Train as you will fight.  Do not take any short cuts.  Make every effort to stay true to the techniques you are trying to master.  Wear your duty gear or carry your equipment as you normally would.

The DP practice sequence should follow a natural progression.  Don't move to a new technique until you have mastered the skills you are currently working on.  For example, many people think DP is only a method of mastering trigger manipulation.  This is NOT the case.

DP exercises can and if done correctly will help you in every aspect of firearm manipulation skills.  They will allow you to develop proper draw techniques, malfunction recovery, presentation smoothness and many more aspects of gun fighting.

I believe you should DP at least 5 times for every live round fired.  So if you shoot 50 rds a week in live fire, you should DP at least 250 times.  Never DP for more that 10-15 minutes per session.  If interrupted, STOP and start over another time.  Make sure you are calling every shot and you are aiming at a target that allows you to immediately access your DP performance.

If you have any DP questions, don't hesitate to ask next time you are in the facility.  Try this skill development technique and watch your shooting improve before your eyes.

Combine Dry Practice with some Dummy round drills when at the range...You will soon see the benefits.  Oh by the way, the student in the 5 day class with the huge trigger issues, improved his final test score by almost 100 points in just 4 days...  this combination of practice drill does work...  Good Luck!!
