Welcome back to the Target Zone:
WOW !!! Where did Oct Go?
No you didn't miss the October newsletter. I did not get it out in time so we decided to combine Oct and Nov in this issue. Sorry, but I have been on the road 24 out of the last 35 days.
Speaking of the road...A special thank you to our staff at CTS. Peggy and I were able to get away to China together because our awesome staff held down the fort while we were away. We were able to enjoy our China experience because we knew that CTS was in good hands. Thanks again Stephanie, Ken and the rest of the staff.
Above is a picture of us on the great wall. We had an awesome time and I am looking forward to teaching there 2 or 3 times in 2011. A special treat was bringing back a couple of copies of my book "Rule the Night Win the Fight" now printed in Chinese. The pictures of Steve Stubbs still look the same in Chinese as they did in the English version. The Chinese said he was so intimidating looking, he doesn't need a gun!
New members that joined in Sept and Oct that did not receive hats because we were out of them, please let our staff know the next time you are in...we have a new supply.
Member fun Shoots. The attendance at the monthly fun shoots has been down. Not sure if that is because of the time of year or if interest is dropping. We will try it for a couple of more times. If the attendance does not pick up we will discontinue them in the future. Please let us know if you find these fun shoots of interest as we are trying to give our members extra time with Ed.
A special thanks to all our members and patrons who continue to spread the good word about our facility. A recent survey has clearly shown that most new shooters to CTS were referred to us by your word of mouth. We can not express enough, our gratitude to all of you for your referrals. Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!
Our gun owner orientation classes continue to grow in popularity. These one hour classes are FREE to you if you purchased your gun from us. However, these classes are available to anyone for a fee if you have a gun that you did not purchase from us. The classes are taught by Cam our gunsmith and are designed to provide new owners a complete orientation to their specific gun. Students learn how to load, unload, assemble/disassemble, clean, maintain, transport and store their new firearm. Just look at the monthly calendar for the scheduled orientation class for your specific make and model of firearm, or call the range for days and times.
REMINDER: Shooters under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent in order to shoot a handgun. Shooters between the ages of 18 and 21 may shoot a rifle without a parent or guardian present. Federal law limits the sale of handgun ammunition to shooters over the age of 21. Please don't ask us to break the law and risk our license.
Parents, remember our Youth HG familiarity class is a great way to introduce your child to professional firearms instruction. We require that at least one parent accompany the student in class at no cost. If you have firearms in your home you should consider enrolling your children in this fun, safe and educational class. What better way is there for you to spend time with your young shooters.

Big Changes - Big News!!!!!
We are constantly evolving. Change is a constant aspect of life. We have a number of changes to inform you of in this article. Some of the changes are mandated by insurance requirements, some are health and safety oriented and some are the result of us wanting to offer better services or perks to our patrons.
FREE GUN RENTAL: FREE Gun rental for all CTS members. That's right, from now on all our members will be able to rent any rental gun we have available for FREE. (Except full auto). We want to encourage our members to try multiple guns before purchase or just afford them the opportunity to experience a new firearm at no cost. Of course you will still have to purchase CTS ammo to use in our rental guns! (That's an insurance issue.)
INSURANCE WAIVER: It is that time according to our insurance carrier. All shooters will have to complete a new "FIREARMS EXPERIENCE WAIVER". This is the 3rd time in 6 years we have had to do a 100% waiver update so I guess that's not too bad. We have however, automated the process this time around so we hope it will be an efficient update. Your patience in advance is appreciated as the staff works through this process.

LOANER EYES AND EARS: Due to Health and Hygiene concerns, we will no longer loan eye and ear protection. The transfer of body oils and fluids on these items has caused an industry wide concern. Even with the aggressive cleaning between use, we feel it is not worth the risk to our patrons. Most shooting ranges have already implemented this program. We wanted to make sure we had a good solution or alternative to offer our patrons before we made a policy change and we believe we now have the solution.
We have found a great pair of eye protection that we are able to sell for $3.00. If you keep them in the plastic bag they are packaged in they will last for years scratch free. As for the ear protection, we will now sell the soft moldable ear plugs for $1.00 each. These are capable of being used many times over and provide an NRR rating of 30. (If you're unclear how to properly wear them for the best protection...ask one of our employees to show you.)
We have increased our stock of low-cost conventional ear muffs for those of you who desire to use them over the soft inserts. Another option is to purchase the custom molded ears that we produce at CTS. To help with the transition on ear protection, we will offer a 10% discount on all custom molded ears until Dec 31st.
CLASS REGISTRATION: Since so many of you sign up for the next level class or an additional class during the day your are attending a class, we have decided to offer you a discount. Anyone who registers for a class on the same day they are attending another class will receive a 10% discount on their new registration. This offer is not available to students attending a class as a "no pay retake" and can not be combined with any other discount.

Spotlight Member of the Month!!
Meet Al Gregory our November spotlight member. Al is in the range about 5 times a week on average. He is always willing to help with anything that furthers the shooting sports and is a tremendous asset to the North Idaho shooting sports community. Thanks Al for all you do for us and the shooters that support our facility.
Each month we will randomly select a member from our roles to be the Spotlight Member of the Month. The spotlight member will have a reserved priority parking place (appropriately marked with a sign), receive 10% off all targets and ammunition for the month that they rein as spotlight members.

Seeking the Unwashed
You ask "What or Who are the Unwashed?" The Unwashed is what I call the people who have not yet experienced the fun and excitement of the shooting sports. They have not yet immersed themselves in the shooting sports experience. We are in search of these people. With your help we can go a long way towards providing a very positive first time shooting experience to your non-shooting friends.
With the change in weather we are experiencing many people turning to indoor activities for their recreation and leisure pursuits. We would love for those people to consider CTS as an alternative to the more traditional indoor activities.
After all, the shooting sports offers so much more than the time spent doing the activity. At CTS patrons can learn life saving skills that will last a lifetime. They can build family memories and insure the future safety of children and adults alike.
Take a moment and think about a friend or relative that is currently shooting activity deficient. Why not pick up the phone and invite them to experience the shooting sports as your guest. Many people never participate in the shooting sports because they are intimidated and have no one to share the experience with. You can solve that.
Recently we had an older woman who drove to our parking lot on three different occasions. Each time she was too intimidated to come in on her own. Finally she got up the nerve to come in and check us out. Long story short, she had a great first time experience and is no longer one of the Unwashed. In fact, she is now a regular and has introduced two of her friends to shooting.
Here's the challenge: Bring a first time shooter in to experience what we have to offer. Inform our staff that your guest is a first timer and we will give you a 50% discount on the "first timer's" range fee.
Together we can make a difference. We can continue to make the North Idaho region a Mecca for shooting sports and shooting activities in general.
Thank you...

Special Warning... Attn: Reloaders In the last few weeks we have had a number of shooters experience equipment failures on the range. In every case the reason the firearms failed and came apart was homemade reloaded ammunition. Luckily, no shooter/reloader received more than a few minor cuts and maybe a change of underwear now and then.
We have been lucky, but let's not depend on luck. I can not emphasize enough the necessity to pay attention to detail when reloading. Please reload in an environment that allows you to concentrate without interruption. Modern firearms are typically pretty well made. However they are not designed to handle the extreme chamber pressures associated with double powder charges, the incorrect powders or primers, etc.If in doubt about what you are doing don't hesitate to seek information or guidance from someone who knows. Don't take a chance with such a serious issue. Your safety, the safety of those around you and of course the value of your firearm are all in the balance. |

NEW Course at CTS!!! A HUGE SUCCESS
AR Armorer Course
On November 6th Center Target Sports offered the most comprehensive AR armorer's course ever seen in the Northwest. Students had a great time as they had the opportunity to completely disassemble, inspect and rebuild a complete AR rifle.
This was the first time we offered this extensive course. We tried to do it in 10 hours which turned into 12. We ran this class as a Beta test and when we polled the students at the end of the day they unanimously agreed that the class should be a two day class to allow for more disassembly and assembly time. So from now on this will be a two day class. Two days will also allow me to expand the troubleshooting section of the class.
A special thanks to Gio Gentilini a Master Gunsmith who assisted in the instruction of the class. What a treat to have him present in the classroom for most of the day. Gio, thanks again for all your help. A little bird told me that Gio will be a permanent fixture in future classes as well.
In case you missed it, below is a bit of info on the class. Because of the demand we will be scheduling another (this time 2 day) class in Feb.

Each student will leave with a very enhanced knowledge of the weapon system, assembly, tear-down, repair, diagnosis and maintenance of the AR-15/M-16 rifle. All rifles, parts, tools and materials will be provided for the student to participate and accomplish the class objective.
We will provide all Rifles and Tools...

Pressure Signs: What To Look For...
Notice the difference in how flat these primers are. Examining the flatness of your fired primers is the best way to read chamber pressure. It's important to keep an eye on this when you're reloading. These 4 fired cases clearly show the different degrees of chamber pressure, and this is an accurate representation when reloading any caliber. If you pay close attention to your fired cases, and you slowly work your way to hotter loads, you'll avoid seeing any of the "serious" pressure signs.
|
- Very mild load (this is too mild).
- Mild load.
- This is an ideal load (could go just a bit hotter).
- Absolute Maximum load (approach this pressure very carefully).
|
Some brands of primers have a noticeably harder cup than others. This difference in hardness can cause a slight variation in your pressure readings. Seating bullets too short or too long will affect chamber pressure considerably, and some types of powder will increase pressure as the outside temperature increases. When you develop maximum loads in the winter, beware of the pressure increase when using those handloads in the heat of summer. Happy reloading and be safe! When in doubt about any aspect of your reloading please seek out expert advice. Do not take a chance with your safety and or your equipment as you work up that perfect load. Don't hesitate to contact the powder manufacturer, the reloader manufacturer, or one of the many online forums on reloading. A word of caution with respect to online forums; verify through multiple sources any load data that is listed in the forums. |
