Welcome back to the Target Zone:

August is almost half over and I am just getting this newsletter finished.  Sorry for the delay...where does the time go?  A very special thank you to the 178 people who participated in the August FREE clinic.  What a treat for us to see all of you that night and what a great example to show the County Prosecutor how many people in the area are concerned about CCW issues.  I personally was very proud of my students who again demonstrated their knowledge of all things concerning CCW .  From all accounts the evening was a huge success and I believe there  was a lot of solid information shared by everyone.
CCW Clinic
I need to thank a few people in particular who were instrumental in the success of this clinic.  First and foremost the two attorneys who gave of their time and experience.  No way this clinic is so informative and beneficial without their participation.  Defense attorney Michael Palmer and Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh, Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!!!  Al Gregory, many thanks for your support.  The extra chairs and the professional PA system you provided were a tremendous help to us.

Mike Arhutick (Videographer Extraordinare), thank you Mike for all the hours and effort you put forth on our behalf behind the camera and the editing computer.  Your work truly exemplifies your ability and passion behind the camera. Last but certainly not least my tremendous staff.  Ladies and gents...  thank you for all you do...not only on these free clinic nights, but every day.  You are the best staff Peggy and I could ever hope to work with.   As many of our customers routinely tell us ...You Guys are the best customer service team in the region.

We are always looking for new Free Clinic ideas so keep them coming.  Please send Peggy an email with your clinic ideas.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS CTS FREE Swap Meet
Sat August 28th

swapmeetDon't worry about having enough stuff to have a table.  We all have a few items we want to get rid of or trade for something else.  This is the perfect opportunity to trade, sell, haggle or do what ever to clean out your shooting closet.

Bring a blanket, a card table, a chair or what ever...  Just sign up and let the trading begin at 0800 on the 28th.  We will  block off a section of our parking lot and allow anyone to set up a table and exchange, sell or trade or just giveaway shooting related items.  You know the holster or magazine that you will never use again.  Or how about all that ammo for the hunting rifle you sold two years ago?

You may bring any shooting related items for your table with the exception of FIREARMS.  Sorry, with our FFL at this address we can not allow any transferring or private sale of firearms.  As long as everyone respects the No-Firearm transfer policy we will continue this FREE swap meet concept a few times a year.

Misc Info...

We are now offering a Bersa Owner's orientation class in our schedule.  Remember we offer a FREE owners orientation class with every firearm purchased here at CTS.  This class is of course offered in addition to the FREE range day that is included in your firearm purchase.  So many of you have been purchasing Bersa's lately that we decided to add the class to the normal rotation rather that having you coordinate with us for a special class.

It is important to point out that this class is FREE if you purchased your firearm from us.  However, any of our orientation classes are available to anyone at a cost of $40.00.  Many of you have purchased your firearm elsewhere and taken our class for the $400.00 fee.  It is a great value to have an hour with our gunsmith and truly learn about your firearm from an expert.

Statistically, many firearm accidents occur due to operator ignorance of their firearm.  We are committed to do everything possible to prevent this from happening.  So whether you purchased the firearm from us or not I hope to see you in an orientation class soon.  No reservation is necessary.  Just check our schedule and show up.

Also....

It has come to our attention that many people think we are a private shooting club or that it is very expensive to shoot here.  We are neither of these things.  In fact the national average for shooting lane across the country is $10.00 per hour per lane.  WE charge $17.00 for the entire day.  Stay as long as you like and shoot as long as you like during regular business hours.

Want an even better deal?  Our individual membership allows unlimited use of the facility during regular business hours for as little as $24.00 per month with a one year commitment.  If you pay for the year up front rather than with monthly payments you receive a 10% discount on any class over $50.00 or non CCW classes.  Take a few classes a year and the membership pays for itself.

REMEMBER... At CTS you may always repeat any class completed forever for FREE!

Defensive Handgun I

I want to take this opportunity to explain why Defensive Handgun I is so important.  As you know, Defensive Handgun I is a prerequisite to many of our more advanced classes.  I have often said my one word definition for Def HG I is "manipulation".  This is the emphasis of this class.  Firearm manipulation is essential to proper technique, skill deployment and proper tactics under stress.

Many of our advanced classes require the students to perform skill sets that are often reserved for the most advanced student or in many facilities they would never be allowed or introduced in a civilian firearms class.  In order for us to get the most out of classes like CCW Street Survival or Combative Handgun Skills, students should know how to manipulate their firearm safely.  Everyone should know and be familiar with the basics like reloading methods, the use of cover, shooting while moving, situational awareness, ballistic considerations and shooting from nontraditional positions.

Defensive HG I is the class that makes this happen for our students.  It is the bridge between target/recreational shooting and shooting to win a fight.  In fact, students who complete this class have more firearm manipulation training than a police cadet at the police academy.  Is Def HG I a building block?  You bet it is.  This class is an introduction to proper manipulation not the end all.  You may think that Def HG II is the end all. If so, you would be wrong.  Def HG II is where we introduce some very advanced manipulations in preparation for the student's enrollment into Tactical Pistol.  My one word definition for Def HG II is 'Refinement'.  That's right it is in this class that we truly learn to refine our basic and advanced manipulation skills.

Peggy is scheduling Defensive Handgun I just about every month so that we can meet the demand.  I hope to see many of you in defensive Handgun I soon.  Believe me you won't be disappointed and when you find yourself in one of the more advanced classes you will be glad you are proficient in the manipulation of your firearm.

New Products In Stock..

As far as new products go this month they could be summarized as "Useful, Unique and Practical".

necklace
The Gatekeeper Door Stop/Alarm is a very good addition to any traveler's bag.  Why not take this device on your next trip.  In the hotel or in the home it is a very practical way to gain a measure of additional security.  Not only do you have the benefit of an additional physical block, but this device when activated sounds an ear piercing alarm that is sure to alert you and scare off the intruder.

necklace
With hunting season only a few weeks away, now is the time to break out those rifles and scopes.  We have just the tool for keeping your scope lens clean without the fear of scratching that very expensive lens.  The Leupold Lens Pen is a must have for anyone who has quality glass that they want to preserve.

The clipdraw is a method of carry that many of you have been asking about.  We now have in stock the clipdraw system for the Glock Pistol.

clip draw  This easy-to-install, spring-steel belt clip eliminates the holster, reduces bulk, improves concealment, and gives a sleeker profile. It is clip mounted on a supplied replacement slide cover plate and extends along the right, or left side of the slide. You can now carry your pistol conveniently tucked in your waistband, pocket or boot.  This accessory does not interfere with your slide function. This is a simple - No-gunsmith installation.

Monthly Safety Tip!

The Immediate Aftermath...

Interaction with Responding Officers

At the CCW Free Clinic held a few weeks ago many of you asked about your actions immediately following a critical incident.  What do I do when the police arrive? In an effort to further clarify some of these concerns, I thought I would hit on what I call "The 3 Zones of Safety" and what I believe are the 5 things we must make the arriving officers believe as soon as possible.  Of course, this must be accomplished without compromising our legal position either from a criminal or civil perspective.  Specifically, in this situation you have just shot an attacker.  Now that the police are on their way...What do you do?

The Three Zones of Safety.

Notification , The Call for Assistance - Zone 1

This is the notification zone.  The zone furthest removed from you.  This is right after the incident and the police must be notified.  You or someone else makes the 911 call.  The police need to know you are the victim and they should be given your description.  Limit this description to the basics such as height, weight, hair color etc...  Avoid describing things that may change such as wearing a hat or glasses.

The Buffers - Zone 2

The buffers are more or less the greeters to the first responders.  Have someone meet the responding officers when they arrive. This should be someone you can trust who repeats the message stated above or at the very least the information must not be contradictory to what was said above.

You - Zone 3

This is the area in your immediate proximity.  (You standing over the body, or in a position of safety)  Everything about you must be non-threatening to the arriving first responders.  Make sure they can clearly see you upon arrival.  Comply with their instructions immediately.

Establish the FIVE Necessary Elements

Now that the police have arrived, what do you do or say?  Many defense attorneys would suggest you say nothing at all until you are in the presence of your attorney.  I do not believe this is the appropriate thing to do.  Don't get me wrong, I do not want you speaking about what you actually did.  But, I do not want you sounding like a bad guy to the first responders.  After all you are NOT a bad guy.

There are 5 elements we need to establish to the first responders.  These elements will be established by your direct statements and by the indirect inference of those stated actions.  Let's take a look at the 5 elements.

1-     You are the VICTIM

2-     Identify any physical evidence

3-     Identify any known or potential witnesses

4-     Notify the officer you will sign the complaint

5-     Notify the officer that you will fully cooperate with the investigation after you have met with counsel.

Unfortunately our system often assumes the person injured on the ground is the victim.  Make it clear you are the victim.  EX: "OFFICER I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE HERE, THAT MAN TRIED TO MURDER ME".

Identify any physical evidence.  EX: "THAT IS THE GUN HE TRIED TO SHOOT ME WITH, THERE IS THE BRASS CARTRIDGE FROM THE SHOT HE FIRED".

Identify any witnesses.  EX: " THAT MAN SAW EVERYTHING, I BELIEVE THEY SAW IT AS WELL".

Every day in the officer's world, who signs the complaint?  The victim usually signs the complaint so let him know you are ready to sign.  EX: "OFFICER I WILL SIGN THE COMPLAINT".

Last but not least notify the officer that you will cooperate with his investigation.  EX: "OFFICER, I WILL BE HAPPY TO COOPERATE WITH YOU AS SOON AS I HAVE TALKED WITH MY ATTORNEY".

As you see, these 5 elements will tell the police what they immediately need to know.  By you talking to them in these genera statement that can only help your case, you are not coming off like the perpetrators the often deal with on a daily basis.  The person who says "I am not saying anything until my attorney gets here soon begins to look like he has something to hide.  That might not necessarily be true but at this stage the officer is making critical decisions in his mind and we want him thinking you are a good guy.  With these 5 elements established you are at least somewhat cooperative in his mind.
first shots FIRST SHOTS AUGUST 28th
On Saturday August, 28, 2010, we will be offering an NSSF "First Shots" event designed for first time shooters.  It will be FREE and consist of classroom and range instruction.  Start thinking of your friends who have never shot a handgun but may have an interest.  This is for FIRST TIME SHOOTERS ONLY and participants MUST pre-register.

This is FREE and CTS will provide everything.  In addition, each participant will receive a free gift bag.  Many of you may remember that we were the 2nd Shooting Range in the US to offer this program 4 years ago.  We are so proud to again take the lead here in the Northwest and offer this program to further the advancement of the shooting sports.

The last time we did this we filled three separate 4-hr sessions with 20 people per session.  A special thank you to everyone who responded last month  to our call for volunteer Safety Officers.  We still need more.  You do not need any special qualification...I am just looking for safety minded shooters that can be an extra set of eyes for me on the firing line.  I will do all the range commands and control the firing line at all times.  So if you would like to volunteer as a safety officer during this event, please email Peggy at [email protected] .
