Welcome back to the Target Zone:
July is almost half over and we are finally experiencing that summer heat we have missed for so long. Speaking of heat! Our Bullseye and IDPA groups continue to grow in both skills displayed and in participants. These two core shooting activities have been in existence for most of the time we have been in business. A very special thanks to those people behind the scenes that have made the success of these programs possible. Jack on our staff has been instrumental in Bullseye and Jeff Floyd, and Joe Stenglein have certainly carried the torch for the IDPA group. Many thanks Gentlemen!
Last week the 2nd Amendment received another vote of support. Although it was a 5 to 4 victory...it was a victory. Makes you wonder though when you look at the votes against the right to bear arms and see that Justice Sonia Sotomayor voted against the 2nd Amendment. Last year, Sonia Sotomayor misled the American people by claiming she believed it was "settled law" that the Second Amendment protected an individual right to keep and bear arms. This year, she proved she never really believed that by voting against the Second Amendment in McDonald v. City of Chicago.
Now we need to look towards the upcoming confirmation process of Elana Kagan. Both her political career in the Clinton Administration and her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee make it clear that Kagan would be a serious opponent of our Second Amendment Rights.
Elena Kagan used the same phrases-"settled law" and "precedent" -to describe her view of the Second Amendment in the hearings. It is critical that the members of the U.S. Senate not fall for the same trick twice. And it is not too late! Please contact your Senators by email at http://www.capwiz.com/nra/dbq/officials/ and urge them to oppose and filibuster Kagan's confirmation. The future of our Second Amendment rights depends on it!
Glock GSSF matches continue to flourish and we appreciate the many female shooters who continue to support the GSSF format. The numbers of female participants has not gone unnoticed by Glock Corporate. In fact they have introduced a "High Female" award which was won by Brenda Davis during the last series. Congrats Brenda!
As you know, we offer a FREE range day and a FREE one hour class with every firearm purchase. The purpose of the class which is taught by Cam our gunsmith, is to ensure you know about your new firearm purchase. Ignorance of how your firearm functions is a major contributor to firearm accidents. We are committed to doing everything possible to assist you in learning about and becoming safer and more comfortable with your new purchase. Just check the monthly calendar for the class date and time. If at all possible, please call and let us know you are planning to attend this free class.
An interesting note about this free class is that we have a number of people who purchased their firearm at another store and pay us for the opportunity to take Cam's class. You can take the class for free if you buy from us, don't miss the opportunity. ____________________
The benefits of membership are many. For an individual if you shoot (pay a daily fee) more than twice a month a membership would save you money. Memberships that are paid in full receive discounts on training classes and all members may participate in "members only" programs. Think about the frequency in which you shoot and if a membership will save you money.
August FREE Clinic Announced!!!
Hold on to your hats. We are so excited to announce a FREE clinic the likes of which have never been seen before.
On August 4th at 6:00 pm we will be hosting the Concealed Carry Legal Review.
We will host a representative of the Kootenai County Prosecutor's office and a very experienced local Defense Attorney who will discuss a justifiable shooting scenario by a legally armed civilian. These litigation experts will discuss the scenario from their respective positions and responsibilities and then open the floor for questions.
This is an amazing opportunity for you to hear first hand from BAR experts as to concealed carry lethal encounter considerations. A FREE clinic such as this would not be possible in many areas of the country.
Never under estimate how fortunate we are in this county to have a prosecutor like the Honorable Barry McHugh and an experienced defense litigator like Michael Palmer. These gentlemen are committed to this community and the law. They are giving of their valuable time, experience and passion for the law to take this clinic to a level unattainable without their participation.
Space for this clinic will be very limited. We only have 100 chairs. This will be a full clinic with a waiting list. Guarantee your seat by reserving your spot ASAP. Reservations can be made only by calling CTS. 208-773-2331....no voice mails or emails please.

CTS FREE Swap Meet
Coming Soon!
So many of us shooters have extra gear lying around that we would like to trade, sell, or just simply pass along to someone who can use it. Well we have decided to block off a section of our parking lot and allow anyone to set up a table and exchange, sell or trade or just giveaway shooting related items. You know the holster or magazine that you will never use again. Or how about all that ammo for the hunting rifle you sold two years ago?
You may bring any shooting related items for your table with the exception of FIREARMS. Sorry, with our FFL at this address we can not allow any transferring or private sale of firearms. As long as everyone respects the No-Firearm transfer policy we will continue this FREE swap meet concept a few times a year.
This is just another way we are trying to enhance your shooting sports experience, save you a few dollars and help each other out with access to some used gear. Watch for the dates and times to be announced very soon. Just let us know you are coming, bring your own table/chairs and start haggling.

A special thank you to Fernan Rod and Gun Club for allowing us once again to use their awesome facility for our Advanced Carbine Class last month. And thank you to Nathan Rhodes for helping us present the free A/R clinic last month.

THREE New Classes NOW OFFERED
We are so excited to announce the new "BASIC PISTOL II" course. This is a course designed by Ken and I to satisfy the many students who have expressed a desire for more hands-on with their firearm prior to taking a CCW or defensive HG course. Many students want to have a little more time with an instructor prior to a CCW qualification or advancement into a defensive level class. If you have completed Basic Pistol...This is the class for you.
Structured to limit the classroom and maximize the range experience. We anticipate 30 to 40 minutes in the classroom and the rest of the 4 hours will be on the range shooting under supervision. The class will be limited to 10 students to guarantee the individual attention necessary to assist in your advancement of your skill sets. In addition to the increased range time students will be introduced to holster work and weapon reloads as well as malfunction clearance.
Another new class that will be offered for the first time in August is called "COMBATIVE HANDGUN SKILLS". I am so excited to offer this class. This class is all about fighting from a startled/flinched position. A position you are guaranteed to find yourself in if under a surprise attack or an unexpected encounter. Skill sets in this class will capitalize on the body's natural flinch reaction and mechanism.
Focus shooting at close and extended ranges will be reemphasized. Movement and dynamic weapons manipulation will be taught and shooting from unusual positions will be presented. Due to the advanced nature of this class, Defensive Handgun I is a prerequisite or contact me for approval.
Cane Defense is being offered on August 26th. Don't miss this opportunity to see for yourself how practical and effective a cane can be for defense. This action packed 4 hour class is designed for participants young and old. Covered in this class will be Defensive Techniques against other weapons, Applications against chokes and grabs, Seated defense, How to use the crook, horn, and shaft of the cane to devastating effect. We will also introduce you to Master Mark Shuey's Exercise with the cane program.

Meet Kelly
As the CTS team continues to grow in an effort to support our commitment to "Customer Service" we are always on the look out for that special person that can make us better as a whole. We certainly have found an "ACE" in Kelly. In the short time she has been with us she has already proven to be a tremendous asset to our business and a great new team member.
A native Californian, Kelly and her husband are new to Idaho. Happily leaving behind the responsibilities of her former bookkeeping position, she is thrilled to be the latest addition to Center Target Sports. She is a member of SistersontheFly.com and never misses an opportunity to hook up her vintage trailer (a 1959 Corvette) for a Sisters' camping trip. She caravans with other Sisters from around the country to pursue a weekend or a week of fly fishing, dutch-oven cooking, shooting, shopping and girl time. Her indoor passions include cooking, sourdough bread making and a rousing game of pinochle or spades.
The next time you are in the facility, please stop and take a moment to introduce yourself to Kelly and see for yourself why we continue to have the Number One Customer Service Staff in the Northwest. |

John Farnam Returns
During these economic times everyone is looking for value in every dollar they spend. I can honestly say that you can never get more bang for your training dollars that by spending it on a John Farnam class.
There is a reason why John is the only outside instructor I allow to teach in our facility. We get many inquiries and requests from traveling instructors. I believe everyone should experience a wide range of different instructors. But in your search for diversity of instruction never compromise quality.
August 13-15 marks the return to Center Target Sports of John Farnam. John is arguably the best defensive handgun instructor in the world. This time John will be teaching his Advanced Defensive Handgun class. Don't let the Advanced title scare you away. John is very versatile and will accommodate anyone interested.
Don't miss this tremendous opportunity to experience a John Farnam class. Ever wonder why we turn down so many outside instructors when they ask to teach here? It is because we only want to maintain the highest level of instruction for our patrons.
As you know we do not benefit from this class financially. We truly offer the Farnam class for your benefit. I believe my students should experience training from a variety of quality instructors. Well, John is at the top of his game... This is a class you don't want to miss. The cost for this 2 1/2 day class is $550.00. Call now to schedule. 208-773-2331. See you in class.

Monthly Safety Tip!
Safety Around Your Home...
This month I want to discuss personal safety in and around your home. There are many things we can do to improve our personal safety and the security of our belongings. Let's start with the residence and our belongings and we will end our discussion with some behavioral considerations that will ultimately keep us and our neighborhood safe.
Put large house numbers on the mailbox and if possible on the house itself. This helps in locating your home in an emergency situation. There is nothing more frustrating to responding emergency personnel than not being able to quickly identify your residence. Give special consideration to numbers that are highly reflective during hours of darkness when illuminated by lights.
Install double cylinder deadbolt locks on all exterior doors six inches above or below the present locks. If you use the deadbolt lock when you're at home, leave the key in the lock to prevent your house from becoming a firetrap. Sliding glass doors should be secured with a pin-type locking device or a bar of some type that lays in the slider track to prevent a force opening.
Special window locks that can be opened only with a key are effective, however, if you do install these locks, have a plan that guarantees access to the necessary keys in case of an emergency that requires your family to exit through these windows. Do not let your house become a firetrap while trying to protect it from burglars. Consider placing a peephole with a wide angle lens in your front door and an additional peephole 3 or 4 feet high to allow small children a vantage point.
Complete a self security assessment of your home by walking around the exterior during the daytime and nighttime. Make note of shrubs that could hide a prowler. Look for window shades or blinds that do not appropriately block visual access into the home. Verify that adequate perimeter lights are in place to provide 360 degree coverage of the residence. A well lit property is an effective deterrent to crime in general.
Resist the urge to put a name tag on your house keys. Engrave your possessions with your driver's license number and make a written inventory. Create a comprehensive permanent property record by taking photographs or video of your jewelry, antiques, art, furnishing, and any additional items of value. Keep a copy of your inventory and images in a safe deposit box or with a family member, but somewhere away from your home. Update your inventory records regularly.
Awareness in and around your home and neighborhood is as important as ever. Pay special attention to all suspicious vehicles. Keep a pen and paper handy. If you see a prowling car in your neighborhood, take down the license number. Ask your children to be alert for suspicious vehicles while they are out and around the neighborhood.
Utilize the time leaving and returning home to identify any suspicious vehicles or activities. Street activity generated by an active neighborhood is a very good deterrent to crime. Make a point of developing even casual relationships with your neighbors. Know what they drive and notice their activity patterns. Report any suspicious vehicles to law enforcement. It is the responsibility of law enforcement to investigate not yours.
Keep garage doors closed and secured. Never leave tools around the garage or patio that may be used for prying or breaking into the residence. While away, make your home look and sound occupied. Use a timer to turn lights on and off at normal times. There are companies that offer Fake TV, a small LED device that simulates the flickering lights of a real TV. Just plug it in and set the timer. You may also have radio playing to add to the illusion that the home is occupied.
Be proactive in your home security. Your family, neighbors and the community will all benefit from your efforts.
Be Safe...

FIRST SHOTS IN AUGUST On Saturday August, 28, 2010 we will be offering an NSSF "First Shots" event designed for first time shooters. It will be FREE and consist of classroom and range instruction. Start thinking of your friends who have never shot a handgun but may have an interest. This is for FIRST TIME SHOOTERS ONLY and participants MUST pre-register.
This is all FREE and we will provide everything. In addition, each participant will receive a free gift bag. Many of you may remember that we were the 2nd Shooting Range in the US to offer this program. We are so proud to again take the lead here in the Northwest and offer this program to further the advancement of the shooting sports.
The last time we did this we filled three separate 4-hr sessions with 20 people per session. A special thank you to everyone who responded last month to our call for volunteer Safety Officers. We still need more. You do not need any special qualification...I am just looking for safety minded shooters that can be an extra set of eyes for me on the firing line. I will do all the range commands and control the firing line at all times. So if you would like to volunteer as a safety officer during this event, please let us know. |
