Welcome back to the Target Zone:

June sure promises to be a busy month for us here at CTS.  In addition to the many classes and programs we have on the schedule, we try to get our big maintenance projects  completed in preparation for the fall.  So I will apologize ahead of time if you smell fresh paint or have to walk around a ladder here and there.

Thanks to everyone who attended last month's FREE clinic onroxie  CCW carry issues.  With 42 people signed up and 33 on a waiting list we decided to rent chairs and accommodate everyone.  It was a huge success.  In fact, we have since purchased 100 folding chairs from Craigslist.  We can now handle everyone who wants to attend a FREE clinic.  Well maybe not, I am afraid when we announce the August FREE clinic we may still need to rent chairs.  In fact, I will be surprised if we have less than 200 people sign up for that clinic.  Yes, I will keep you in suspense and not tell you the subject matter or the guest speakers for that one just yet!

Thanks for the many comments about the Master CCW course.  It is just fair to offer the Oregon certificate to those who want it without charging another fee.  We have built this business on customer service and we will continue to add benefits for you as thanks for your loyalty whenever and where ever possible.  About 70 people took us up on the initial offer and that is 70 people who did not have to pay an extra fee for something they already earned.

A very special thanks to all the female shooters and students.  Your continued support and "Word of Mouth" promotion of our programs is both humbling and gratifying.  Years ago "Old School" ways of thinking were such that Woman Only classes were the only way to get females in a shooting class.  As a firearms instructor for over 30 years I have never bought into such archaic thinking.  In fact nothing makes me smile more than watching a female's face as her target returns and she realizes she has outshot the guy in the next stall.

The fact that I have given away more 'best shot' T-shirts to women than men speaks volumes.  We have always stressed respect and equality in all our programs and it has paid off.  Again thank you very much for your continued support.

In August, we will be doing an NSSF "First Shots" event on a Saturday designed for first time shooters.  It will be FREE and consist of classroom and range instruction.  Start thinking of your friends who have never shot a handgun but may have an interest.  This is all FREE and we will provide everything including some free giveaways.  The last time we did this we filled three separate 4-hr sessions with 20 people per session.  More on this fantastic event next month.  PS: If you would like to volunteer as a safety officer during this event, please let us know.

Just a reminder, The New OC class begins in July.  This is the most comprehensive OC class taught to civilians anywhere in the Northwest.  If you or someone you love carries OC (pepper Spray) you owe it to them to receive professional instruction.

A
ll OC products are not created equally.   In addition to product quality concerns we must address the legal and liability issues associated with OC for defense.  How about safety concerns in general?

UTAH CCW Update..  I am sure everyone knows by now, but I want to remind you that NM has stopped honoring Utah CCW.  In fact, NM at present time honors only Texas.  They are reviewing other states for possible acceptance.

Another issue that all prospective Utah applicants need to know is the 6 year DUI window.  Utah will NOT approve any CCW applications if there is a DUI conviction within 6 years of your CCW application submission. Also, for all of you holding on to your paperwork, Utah has now put a one year time limit on the paperwork.  See Ed or Peggy if you fall into this category.

 New Assistant Manager

roxieHoping to take some of the daily pressures off of Stephanie we are proud to announce Ken Cramer as our new Assistant Manager.  I guess it is a good thing that we are so busy that we needed to establish the assistant manager position.

We are thrilled to have a person on staff with the skills and attributes that Ken possesses.  It was an easy call for Stephanie, Peggy and I to make and we sure appreciate his willingness to hit the ground running in his new position.  Please take the time to congratulate Ken the next time you are in the facility.

TWO New Classes NOW OFFERED

We are so excited to announce the new "BASIC PISTOL II" course.  This is a course designed by Ken and I to satisfy the many students who have expressed a desire for more hands-on with their firearm prior to taking a CCW or defensive HG course.  Many students want to have a little more time with an instructor prior to a CCW qualification or advancement into a defensive level class.  This is the class for you.

Structured to limit the classroom and maximize the range experience.  We anticipate 30 to 40 minutes in the classroom and the rest of the 4 hours will be on the range shooting under supervision.  The class will be limited to 10 students to guarantee the individual attention necessary to assist in your advancement of your skill sets.  In addition to the increased range time students will be introduced to holster work and weapon reloads as well as malfunction clearance.

The other new class that will be offered for the first time in August is called "COMBATIVE HANDGUN SKILLS".  I am so excited to offer this class.  This class is all about fighting from a startled/flinched position.  A position you are guaranteed to find yourself in if under a surprise attack or an unexpected encounter.  Skill sets in this class will capitalize on the body's natural flinch reaction and mechanism.

Focus shooting at close and extended ranges will be reemphasized.  Movement and dynamic weapons manipulation will be taught and shooting from unusual positions will be presented.  Due to the advanced nature of this class, Defensive Handgun I is a prerequisite or contact me for approval.
Meet Doug & Paul
Doug and Paul were hired on the same day.  They make up two of our 3 new employees that you may have noticed working the floor
.  Next month we will introduce you to Kelly, our other new team member

doug
Doug is an Army vet and served as an infantry medic.  He and his wife Chris retired to North Idaho after working 30 years in manufacturing and operations in the pharmaceutical and bio tech industries.

Doug brings a lot of experience to the team.  He has fit right in with the staff and is already a favorite of many of our patrons.

His hobbies include guns (especially AR's), golf, fishing and gardening.

Paul is a retired instrumentation engineer. His extensive design and field testing of weapons and their deliverypaul systems, brings a real sensitivity to safety. After retiring, he finally had time for personal pursuits of civilian weapons.  Our "science guy" says, always start with the basics. So, from military weapons he started one hobby of black powder muskets, rifles, pistols, and golf ball shooting canons. That hobby was shared at Boy Scout Jamborees educating our youth.

He volunteers teaching 4th graders math and science. He is very proud of their new passion for science and their ability to compute the kinetic energy of a 18-wheeler vs. a mini van (reason for seat belts), and a 9-mm vs. a golf ball. "His" 4th graders love his CTS shirt.

NEW PRODUCTS Showcase

We continue to search for new products that we believe will interest you.  This month we highlight a few of our new finds.  These items are in stock if you have any interest.

The first new product is the Strip Lula by Butler Creek.  If you own an AR you do not want to be withoululat one of these speed loaders.  Use the .223 caliber ammo on stripper clips or insert them individually by hand.  From the stripper clips you can now load 30 rounds in your magazine with unmatched speed...just 12 seconds!

The Strip LULA is the fastest, easiest-to-use strip loader on the market, and it fits in your pocket.

CRTAR owners
this new product is for you.  It is called the Carbon Removal Tool (CRT).  Never before has the soldier, enthusiast, gunsmith, or armorer had access to a single tool that can remove the carbon from both the bolt tail and bolt carrier with such ease and precision. This revolutionary tool eclipses the function of the "scraper style" tools currently in the industry by not only improving on their ability to remove carbon buildup in the bolt carrier, but surpassing them by adding the feature of quickly and accurately removing carbon buildup from the tail of the bolt. No longer must the soldier, enthusiast, gunsmith, or armorer toil with solvent and a wire brush to adequately clean the tail of the bolt. Only the CRT-15 can remove carbon properly from any bolt tail radius, (bolt tail dimensions vary between manufacturers)! The CRT-15 is the must have cleaning tool that should be in every cleaning kit of an AR-15, M-16, and M-4 owner/operator.

The multi-function choke wrench fits most tubes from .410 to 10 ga. and doubles as a scope windage and elevation adjuster. A durable stainless steel and grip-coat polymer frame neatly houses every implement. Unlike handyman multi-tools, the Gun Tool is built from the specific needs, insights and frustrations of hunters and shooters. No tool fits you better.

When Do You Recycle Your Defensive Ammo??

roxieOn numerous occasions, students have questioned when they should rotate defensive handgun ammunition. Unfortunately, there is no one concrete answer. The answer depends on a number of factors:

When ammunition is not damaged by manual cycling through the gun, there generally is no problem and the gun functions just fine. However, you need to think about how many times per week or month you are cycling a loaded round through your gun in loading or unloading. If you cycle the top bullet from the magazine into the chamber each time, you are getting plenty of hits on the bullet nose, extractor groove, and case rim with basically steel on brass. What do you think will give first? If you guessed the brass or the copper, you are correct.

Every time you cycle a round into the chamber, the nose of the bullet hits the feed ramp causing a slight denting of the hollowpoint bullet mouth. The size of the dent depends on the weapon feed ramp design and the shape of the hollowpoint bullet nose. If the bullet nose hits against the feed ramp enough times, with multiple re-chambering of the same round, you could get enough of a dent to cause a miss-feed and/or a jam, rendering the weapon temporarily out of service, if only for a critical moment.

Every time you cycle a round from the magazine into the chamber, you are making a small gouge or dent in the extractor groove and/ or case rim. With time, continued recycling can cause a weapon malfunction, depending on the design of the weapon.

Some weapons have sharper extractor tips than others. High extractor tension coupled with a sharp extractor tip can increase the case damage. In addition, the shape of the ejector and the force of the manual ejection of the loaded round can damage a case rim. In addition, defensive ammo is out in the weather -- rain, sleet, snow, with extremes of temperature and humidity. We have seen, many times, bullets in the magazine that have turned green from corrosion. We have even seen bullets in the chamber so corroded, that they had to be removed from the bore with a wooden stick.

Some students over-lubricate their guns, and this lubricant eventually gets on the ammunition. Over time, certain lubricants can get into the casing, contaminating the powder, primer, or both, causing the round to not fire or resulting in a squib.

After a careful review of the above information, consider whether or not you load and unload the same round time and time again. If so, you can lessen the wear by putting the chambered round in the bottom of the magazine.

You should examine the bullet tips, and if they look beat up, segregate the ammunition for practice. You should also consider the weather conditions in your area. If you are in an area of high heat and humidity coupled with salty conditions (near the ocean), inspect your carry ammunition carefully for signs of corrosion or other damage.

If you are operating under average conditions of temperature, humidity, and loading and unloading cycles, you should rotate the defensive ammo you carry on your person or in your patrol vehicle twice a year. If you are operating under more adverse conditions, more frequent ammunition rotation would be advisable.

Remember, the rotated defensive ammo can be used for practice when either a miss-feed or miss-fire presents no safety issue for the student. Additional practice to keep skills sharp is inexpensive insurance to protect your safety.

After considering the information presented in this article, you may want to rotate your defensive ammo more frequently. You may find that doing so is cheap insurance and adds to increased student safety.
