Welcome back to the Target Zone:

March is here, can you believe it?  We are excited and so pleased about how things have been going here at CTS.  Again many thanks to you our patrons.  This issue of the Target Zone is packed with information and updates to the goings on at CTS.  Don't miss the below articles about shooting lane member only reservations, the new monthly FREE clinics, and the diverse classes now regularly offered.

Last month saw a phenomenal response to Grand Master Shuey's Cane FU seminar.  The seminar was attended by over 40 participants of all ages.  In addition to the self defense aspect of this very interesting sport, people were blown away by the fitness aspect of Cane FU.  The exercise band system was very well received.

canefu class

We are now stocking Grand Master Shuey's videos, fitness bands, and both defensive and practice canes which we will custom size to your needs.  We will also be offering Cane FU seminars in the upcoming months.

In February we completed another first aid / CPR /AED class and a sold out Wilderness first aid class.  We love the fact that so many of the non-shooting classes continue to be so well attended and supported.

cpr classThe video shooting continues and I appreciate all your patience as we develop a video reference to all our programs and classes.  Our plan is to have a menu driven video system that will allow prospective students the ability to preview short 1 or 2 minute video loops that will show what to expect when taking a particular course.

Participation in the member fun shoots on the 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month has really grown.  The comments from our members who participate have been very positive.  We will continue to challenge you and make each Fun Shoot a fun learning experience.

The new books on Idaho CCW issues and the Mini Baton (Kubaton) manual are nearing completion.  Look for them to soon be added to our book/video section.  The firearm manuals we added last month to the new book section have been well received and we are increasing our selection daily.

Thanks again for all your support.  I hope you enjoy this issue and find many of the articles helpful.  Please don't hesitate to suggest any topics for our upcoming FREE clinics.

Ken Cramer to the Rescue

As many of you know my travel schedule continues to get more hectic.  Already on the books this year is a number of training trips throughout the United States and several to mainland China.  Our resident classes are growing in number and frequency as well.  There is only so much of me to go around (OK...I hear the snickers on that one).

For quite some time we have tried to find someone to help me withroxie the basic courses.  I am very particular about our courses and the way they are presented.  We will never compromise our training mission or course integrity and content. I feel so very fortunate and blessed to have Ken Cramer on staff.  In addition to working the facility he has become a critical part of our training programs as well.

Ken is an outstanding instructor who very effectively utilizes his many years of firearms training to the betterment of all our basic firearms programs.  I have total confidence in Ken's abilities, passion and dedication to our training mission and to your shooting skills development.

Ken will be helping me by teaching some of the Handgun Familiarity and Basic Handgun courses.  We will be working together to review and modify as necessary any course to better serve your needs.

FREE Clinics Every Month

We are committed to offering unique programs, services and products to our customers, members and the community at large.  In keeping with this philosophy, we are excited to announce our FREE monthly clinic program.  Every month we will offer a FREE clinic to help you better understand various aspects of the shooting sports and personal defense.

Our first FREE clinic was our Purse Party held March 4th.  The purse party included apurse party presentation on concealed carry issues for woman, purse carry considerations and a number of tips and suggestions for woman that carry or are considering carrying a concealed carry weapon.  Stephanie hosted this event and presented the program as well.  Refreshments were served.  Here is a picture of some of the purse party participants enjoying the evening.

Our 2nd FREE clinic will be the Bullseye / Precision shooting clinic scheduled for April 24th at 4pm.  Jack, our bullseye expert extraordinaire will host this event.  The emphasis of this program will be all the elements and processes necessary to shoot accurately.  Whether you are a bullseye shooter or someone that wants to improve their overall shooting skills, this free clinic is not to be missed.

What is Bullseye Pistol?

"Bullseye" pistol shooting (also known as "Conventional Pistol" or "National Match" shooting) is classic "Off Hand" (one hand only) pistol shooting at circular "Bullseye" targets. These targets have scoring rings to measure the value of the hit. This is the same match format used at the National Matches held each year at Camp Perry, Ohio.

A Bullseye match is composed of three sub-event firing stages; Slow Fire, Timed Fire and Rapid Fire. These are the building blocks of a Bullseye match.

Our up coming clinic will cover match structure, the course of fire, range protocol, shooting techniques and target analysis.

We welcome new or curious shooters to come to the clinic and learn more about this discipline.

In May (date to be determined) I will host a FREE clinic on Concealed Carry Methods.  Here we will discuss and demonstrate a variety of carry methods and discuss their pros and cons.  This will be a fun way to get together and openly discuss various lifestyle and dress style issues that we all must overcome when wishing to carry concealed all the time.  Don't miss this fun get together.

In June (date to be determined) we will host a FREE AR-15 / Carbine clinic.  We will discuss operation, accessories, configurations, ballistics, optics, ammunition and much more.  If you own or are contemplating purchasing an AR or AR accessories, don't miss this FREE clinic.

We ask that you please make an effort to sign up ahead of time so that we may better facilitate the requirements of each event.

We are looking for suggestions for other clinics to host at CTS...send your ideas to peggy@centertargetsports.com

Member Lane Reservations

Effective March 16th members will be able to call ahead and reserve a shooting lane for one hour based on availability.  We recognize that due to the tremendous popularity of our training programs we sometimes have the tactical bay tied up limiting access to all 15 lanes.  Rest assured we are working to limit these bottlenecks through creative class scheduling.

In an effort to guarantee our members access to a shooting lane, we are dedicating two lanes in the fixed bay to member only reservations.  This is how it will work.  These lanes will be open to any walk in shooter if no reservations exist when the walk in shooter is requesting access.  If a member wishes to reserve a lane for a specific hour and no one else has reserved one of the two member lanes for that time, they will be given the reservation.  Any walk in shooter prior to the reserved time will be allowed to shoot on the open lane with the understanding that they may be asked to vacate the lane at the time of the arrival of the member with a reservation.

Members will be allowed a 5 minute grace period for late arrival.  Reservations will be forfeited after that time.  Members who no-show for 3 reservations within a one year period will forfeit their right to make reservations.  All reservations must be made by contacting a staff member in person or by phone.  We will not take phone messages or emails for reservations.  Please have your member number ready.  Reservations can only be made 48 hours in advance.

We hope this will allow all our members to have access to shooting lanes and provide an additional benefit of membership.

Seldom Offered Classes on the Schedule

Most of our classes are offered many times throughout the year.  However, a few are only scheduled once or twice.  In the upcoming weeks we have scheduled Basic Carbine on March 19th, Terminal Ballistics on April 10th, and Advanced Carbine on June 27th.

Advanced Carbine is the class we teach at Fernan Rod & Gun Club.  This is a very special place and we are very fortunate to have a facility like FR&G that allows us access to their facility.  It is with their cooperation that I am able to challenge you all with the long distance shooting exercises I incorporate into my Advanced Carbine course.  I encourage all of you to support the FR&G club at every opportunity.

Shooting Events Explained

We have been getting a number of questions concerning the details of the many shooting events and competitions we regularly schedule.  I will try to explain the 3 most popular of these activities.  First let's talk about the Glock Sports Shooting Foundation GSSF matches held every month on the third Saturday.  Every participant who shoots in 2 of the 3 months is eligible for a drawing for a brand new Glock.  That's right, every 3 month series we give away a new Glock and it has nothing to do with your shooting skills.

The GSSF League Match is a series of three matches conducted over a 3-month period. Participants must be current GSSF members and compete in two of the three matches to qualify for plaques and prizes. If you are not currently a member, you may join at Center Target Sports upon registration at a GSSF League Match. An annual GSSF membership costs only $35.00 for new members and $25.00 for renewing members and allows you to compete in any GSSF match.

The Lewis Prize Allocation system is used to distribute awards as equitably as possible. Thus, competitors may shoot ANY GLOCK pistol. Your two best scores of the series will be totaled and averaged at the end of the 3-match series. If a shooter competes in only two matches, his/her scores are totaled and divided by two. If a shooter competes in all three matches, his/her best two scores are totaled and divided by 2.

The result is one final score for each shooter, which is then listed in the overall order in which he/she finished. The overall list is then divided into thirds, with the top one-third considered "A Class," the second one-third is "B Class," and the final one-third is "C Class." Plaques are awarded to the top competitor of each class.  There is also an award for the top female shooter.

The Thursday night Bullseye matches are another area of much interest.  The bullseye group is a fun way to enjoy precision shooting in a fun relaxed atmosphere.  Jack facilitates this group and they sure seem to have a great time.  They alternate the various courses of fire and definitely keep thing interesting.  Jack is a wealth of knowledge and experience.  Don't miss the opportunity to learn from a great bunch of shooters.

International Defensive Pistol Association is another growing      shooting discipline we offer on the first and second Sunday morning each month.  The group usually starts shooting about 8am and they are all off to church by 11am.

IDPA as a sport is quite simply the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated "real world" self-defense scenarios. Shooters competing in IDPA events are required to use practical handguns and holsters that are truly suitable for self-defense use. No "competition only" equipment is permitted in IDPA matches since the main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual, not his equipment or gamesmanship.

I have to warn you about IDPA, try this sport and you will be hooked...  Feeling very ambitious about your shooting? Try them all, you will be glad you did.

Shooting Technique

Reactive shooting accuracy can be greatly enhanced by paying attention to the fundamentals.  I continue to see many people struggling with the same issues.  Here are a few thoughts that may help overcome some obstacles to more accurate and consistent shooting performance.

  • Stance

When handling a pistol, close your eyes and raise the gun naturally without thinking then open your eyes to see where your natural point of aim is.  Move your feet along with your body to align your point of aim with the target. That is the best stance compared to pointing straight forward. Your body is less likely to move in this natural position when the trigger is pulled. Feet should be shoulder width apart.  When two handed shooting, position the dominate foot a little to the rear.

  • Grip

There should be no gap between the top of the grip and the part of hand between the thumb and the index finger. This will form a positive physical connection that will prevent slippage when the gun recoils.

  • Sight alignment

The eye, the sight at the tip and the back of the gun must align first. The front and back sights must be aligned both horizontally and vertically.  Level and equal is the phrase I often repeat to students during their shooting sequence.  After you achieve that level and equal, you must then shift your focus to the front sight.  Stay on the front sight through the rest of the firing sequence.

.

  • Breathing

Accuracy will be at its best when the body is most relaxed. This moment is known as the "natural respiratory pause" and is the point at which two-thirds of the lung's capacity has been exhaled. This is typically the point in the breathing sequence between the exhale and the inhale.

  • Trigger Prep

As discussed last month, trigger prep is critical to accurate reactive shooting.  Trigger Preparation is placing your finger on the trigger in preparation of firing your shot and moving the trigger to the rear to take out the slack or the excess front end movement of the trigger right before it releases the firing pin. If done properly, trigger preparation can even be accomplished when using the reset feature common on many semi-auto handguns.  Learning trigger prep will result in some premature shot releases.  That is OK as long as you are on target.  In order to develop the preparation point to just before the shot releases you will go too far in some cases.  In time you will begin to get the feel of the trigger and reap the benefits of a shooting sequence that incorporates a properly prepped trigger.

Prepping the trigger or placing your finger in the trigger housing prior to actually firing the pistol is negligent!  Remember-you must keep your finger off the trigger until you are absolutely positive that you must immediately fire! Practice and preach this or suffer the consequences!

  • Follow through

After the firing, align the sights with the target again. According to shooting coaches, the discipline of realigning the gun to the target after the bullet has left the barrel somehow improves the steadiness of the hand.
