Welcome back to the Target Zone:

HAPPY New Year ... As you can see time got past us and I've decided to combine the Jan and Feb newsletter into one.  In the past month  we've been to the jungles of Belize with family and to the SHOT show (another kind of jungle) for the range.  Both were great, but exhausting trips and it's nice to be back in the Northwest...God's country.  2010 is starting out like 2009, and  I hope and pray that we are as blessed.

Wow! we have so much happening here at CTS.  I am sure many of you have noticed a lot of production quality video equipment being used during our training classes and  various shooting events.  We are creating videos of all our training and activities so that we may better represent to our patrons the curriculum and content experienced in our programs.

It is our plan to have a constant video loop playing on the flat screen located over the class flyers.  An interactive menu will also be available for the patron who is interested in a particular class.  You will be able to click on the menu and then watch video excerpts of the classroom and range exercises included in a  particular class of interest.

Grand Master Shuey will be here on February 6th and this is an opportunity you do not want to miss.  Cane FU is one of the fastest growing forms of self defense in the country.  What an opportunity to take a class from the founder of the art.  This class is truly a class for all ages.

2-day Tactical Pistol, Wilderness First Aid, Basic Life Support /CPR, and Family personal Safety are all being offered in February.  These are classes that are not often offered so register soon if you are interested.

If you have any suggestions or corrections for the new website, or ideas for the newsletter, please email Peggy at
[email protected].

Be Safe....

Meet Dan Loughlin.

Dan is the newest member of our team and comes to us after a 29 year career in Law Enforcement.  Dan and his wife of 31 years, moved to North Idaho five years ago.  Dan enjoys Danhunting, fishing, skiing, and racquetball.  He is active in the ATV community as Vice President of the North Idaho ATV Association and is an Idaho Parks and Recreation certified ATV safety instructor.

Dan shares our vision for CTS and has hit the ground running.  He started with us in the middle of the holiday rush and has picked up our systems with amazing speed.  Dan is a hard worker who believes in providing the best possible customer service.  Please take the time to introduce yourself to Dan the next time you are in.

Lanes Are Always Available

This is the time of year that we often see law enforcement training at our facility.  If you drive into the parking lot and see lots of cars, don't assume there are no lanes available.  We always keep one of the bays open for walk-in shooters.  It is very rare that we have to have a waiting list due to LE training.  In fact, almost all of Spokane County Sheriffs Department range use is scheduled for mornings which frees up all the lanes in the afternoon when we don't have classes.  Even on class days, one bay is always open for members and the public.

roxieDuring the time when we have a waiting list the lines seem to move quickly.  We are always strategically scheduling our classes so that our in-house classes that require range use afford the most access to our walk-in customers.  In addition, I try to use the small bay whenever possible to free up the large bay for walk-in shooters.

We appreciate all your patience during these high use periods and want you to know that we are sensitive to range access.

NICS Report!!

Data released by the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,407,155 checks in December 2009, ranking the month in the top five for most NICS checks of all time.

This figure, while being a 7.6 percent decrease from the 1,523,426 checks conducted in December 2008 -- the beginning stage of an ongoing surge in firearms and ammunition sales -- is an increase of 14.4 percent over checks in December 2007.

Year-to-date background checks for 2009 total 14,033,824, an increase of 10.4 percent over the same time period last year. The total number of background checks reported since the beginning of NICS is 110,017,832.

And The Winner Is !

Kathy Brown is the new owner of the Ladies Shoot Freekathy Thursday Necklace Giveaway.

On January 7th Stephanie drew from a huge number of submissions and she picked the receipt that Kathy deposited in the bowl on her very first visit to Ladies Day.  Congrats to Kathy.  Below she is pictured receiving the necklace from Peggy at a Spokane Chief's game.  We were able to save her a trip to Idaho when we realized we would both be attending the game.

Thank you all for participating and keep a look out for Stephanie's next brilliant idea!!
Center Target Sports Logo Apparel

roxieYou asked for it and Stephanie found it!  We have just received our first shipment of Fleece Jackets and Soft Shell Jackets with our CTS logo tastefully embroidered on the left breast area.

We were all very impressed with the quality and apperance of these jackets.  We have a good selection of sizes and more arriving daily.  They are so comfortable and now I see why this style of jacket is so popular these days.

We are very pleased with these jackets as they are our first attempt to offer a nice logo jacket to our members and patrons.  We hope you feel the same way and will wear these jackets with pride and advertise that you frequent the Northwest's most modern sport shooting and training center.

TACTICAL PISTOL COMING IN FEBRUARY

roxieIt is that time of year again, Tactical Pistol Class to be exact.  This is the most advanced pistol class taught anywhere in the region.  This is a two day class that requires students to conduct live fire exercises as well as Use of Force scenarios held off site in a commercial building.  The off site facility allows us to create real world scenarios in a very real setting.  Each student will participate in at least 6 scripted exercises that may require any level of response from less lethal to deadly force.

Since we lost a dedicated training building that we had access to over the last few years, we are again searching for an ideal location to hold scenario day.  The last couple of classes were held in an office building and warehouse property that was donated to us for the day by one of our students.  Since all the scenarios are scripted with role players and very aggressively controlled, the property is safe.  We use air-soft training guns that may be used indoors without any damage or even odor leaving no trace of their use in the building.

We would be willing to trade the class enrollment to any student that has access to such a location and allows us to use it.  Please contact Stephanie or Peggy to offer up a training location.

 SHOT Show Updates....

I thought I would give you an update on products seen at the SHOT show.
Peggy and I decided to hold this January Newsletter until we returned from the SHOT Show.  I am on a plane writing this article as I can't wait to share our show experience with you.  Together with Stephanie, we walked in excess of 10 miles per day up and down the trade show floor that covered over 700,000 net square feet. The show was attended by almost 2,000 vendors and 58,000 attendees.

The biggest surprise to us all at this years show was the tremendous increase in small personal gun vaults.  You could not count the number of vendors and manufacturers that were displaying the latest and greatest in these increasingly popular vault boxes.  We looked and evaluated every one and picked two different models from two different manufacturers.  We have them in stock now and are very excited about what they offer.  One model is designed as a mobile unit that can be mounted in the vehicle and in the home.  It comes with two mounting brackets and with the flip of a lever you can move it from car to home in seconds.

The other is an awesome bio-vault at a decent price.  You will be amazed at the quality of this vault that is capable of storing just one or multiple handguns.  Come in and see our new personal vault display and evaluate all the models side by side.

Can You Say PURSES?  Wow, I had two excited women with me as we walked the show and they found some awesome concealment purses.  Stephanie found some designer purses that absoultely do not look like the traditional plain concealment purses previously available.  I was impressed with the quality and locking gun compartments on many of the models.  These purses are on their way and we will have a very large selection of purses any day now.  Even, the bright FuFu type designer bags that any discrimenating woman would be proud to carry her favorite handgun in.  Watch out for our first ever Purse party coming in March.

We finally found the TW-25 grease that dissappeared from the market place about 18 months ago.  They have resurfaced after some problems with companies trying to copy their formula and we now have it in stock.

We purchased the Mac 10 pistol in 22cal.  We will have one in the rental cabinet in about 4 weeks.  We will also have the original 45ACP and the 9mm version in the rental case in about 1 week.  These guns will also be stocked for sale and with their reputation for performance and a lifetime warranty I believe they will be very popular.

Another find for us was a vender who prints very comprehensive operator/maintenance manuals for a wide varity of firearms.  Everything from common guns like the Glock, HK, etc to the more uncommon collectibles.  We now have a selection in stock and will continue to grow the inventory selection.  Let us know if there is a particular model you want us to bring in.

As you can see, the SHOT show was a big success for us and we are excited to tweak our inventory to better serve your needs.

TRIGGER PREP...TRIGGER PREP

The one aspect of accurate Reactive shooting that is often overlooked is Trigger Preperation.  What do I mean by trigger prep?  And how do we accomplish it?  And when do we begin to prep the trigger during the shooting sequence?

First and foremost, Trigger Prep ONLY takes place AFTER you have decided to shoot the target.  It never takes the place of INDEXING.

Trigger Preparation is
placing your finger on the trigger in preparation of firing your shot and moving the trigger to the rear to take out the slack or the excess front end movement of the trigger right before it releases the firing pin. If done properly, trigger preparation can even be accomplished when using the reset feature common on many semi-auto handguns.  Learning trigger prep will result in some premature shot releases.  That is OK as long as you are on target.  In order to develop the preparation point to just before the shot releases you will go too far in some cases.  In time you will begin to get the feel of the trigger and reap the benefits of a shooting sequence that incorporates a properly preped trigger.

Prepping the trigger or placing your finger in the trigger housing prior to actually firing the pistol is negligent!  Remember-you will keep your finger off the trigger until you are absolutely positive that you must immediately fire! Practice and preach this or suffer the consequences!

Think about this. We know that your body will go through many changes when you are involved in a critical incident and or a gunfight. Some of the changes that will occur are that you will lose the ability to perform a fine motor skill (i.e. precise trigger manipulation), tactile sensation (the ability to feel with your finger tips) and your body will operate with gross motor movement. If you are accustomed to preping the trigger and suddenly find youself hammering the trigger under stress, the limited movement left in the trigger stroke will result in more accurate shots.  We know under stress the trigger manipulation will be gross and extreme, so let's limit the length of this movement through proper trigger preparation.  Give it a try next time you are at the range...You will be amazed at the small group size you will shoot.
