Welcome back to the Target Zone:

Hope everyone survived the 4th.  Peggy and I along with Chuck were at the helm for the holiday.  It was the first July 4th that we stayed open and we're glad we did.  We had both bays open to accommodate the shooters for most of the day.  Thanks to those that decided to visit us and we will definitely do it again next year.

The atmosphere in the facility has been beyond our expectations.  Thank you for all the great comments and continued support.  As you will read below we continue to expand our course selection.  We have added a new course Basic Life Support and CPR which includes orientation and operation of the AED.  This is a course certified by the American Heart Association which includes a student manual and a 2 year certification card. If you need to be CPR certified for work...think Center Target Sports.

In the way of merchandise, we are proud to announce that we have become the area's Night Hawk Custom Dealership.  We will soon have a Night Hawk Custom in the rental case.  If you are a 1911 fan, you owe it to yourself to shoot one of these masterpieces.

Don't miss the article below on some recent changes to the firearms laws in Idaho and Utah.  We are getting closer to John Farnam teaching here in August.  Don't miss the opportunity to experience a class with the best defensive handgun instructor in the world.  There is a reason why he is the only outside instructor that I have ever allowed to teach firearms in our facility. Come see why.

On a personal note.  On July 2nd I had the privilege of attending the first ever, Idaho POST  "Police  Academy" graduation held in North Idaho.  This is a tremendous achievement for all of the citizens of North Idaho.  I was particularly privileged, proud, and humbled, but not surprised to see My Friend, My Student, and Brother in Christ "Steve Stubbs" graduate with honors.  In fact, the academy gives 6 individual awards for special achievement in specific areas.  Steve won 3 of the 6.  Great job Steve.  We are all very proud of you and your accomplishments. Kootenai County is especially fortunate to have you wear the uniform of the Kootenai  County Sheriff's Dept.

Just a reminder, we are more than happy to accomodate any special group or gathering that you may want to add the element of the shooting sports.  We often do Bachelor parties, Birthday parties, Office Team Building and political fundraisers.  In fact, on August 24th we are hosting a fundraiser for Idaho US Senator Crapo.

We are starting to see some relief on guns and ammo.  Defensive ammo and rim fire are still a big question as well as primers.  Hang in there as the manufacturers should be over the hump soon and we should see the shelves starting to fill up again.

The AR Pro Shop continues to grow and most of our tools are now in.  We are starting to see the parts coming in as well.

Quick Update:

As of today we have 1 Patrol and 1 Tactical Next Generation AR in stock...

Utah permits seem to be arriving approximately 88 days after your check clears or card is charged.

FUN SHOOT!
Girls class
July 26th is our first of what we hope to be a new tradition at CTS.    This will be a regular feature available only to our members that we are trying to schedule on the 3rd Sunday of each month, but check our calendar each month as the first one is on the fourth Sunday!

Shooting will start at 8am and will be over before noon so you all can still make the afternoon church service of your choice.  Come and challenge your skills in a controlled environment sharing the experience exclusively with other Center Target Sports members.

We will have coffee available for everyone.  The format will be very low-stress.  My goal is to have an event that everyone can participate in and share a great learning experience.  I will always be available for questions and to help in any way.

Please join us to make this a great added value to all of you our members.   Make sure you bring your membership card!
FARNAM IS COMING...

Girls class Aug 28 - 30

Don't Miss the Country's Best Defensive Handgun Instructor

 FIRST TIME OFFEREDGirls class

On July 14th and 16th we will be offering our Basic Life Support and CPR Certification as well as an overview on the use of the AED.  Peggy and I are really excited about the opportunity to broaden our course offerings with this American Heart Association Certified Course.

Learn how to recognize the symptoms of a SCA, Stroke, Heart Attack and how to do CPR (for adults, children, and infants), Heimlich maneuver (choking), and rescue breathing. In addition, we will teach you how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. These important devices are becoming available in more and more public places, such as airports, hotels, schools, and health clubs.

This first aid portion of the course provides skills in first aid emergencies such as bleeding, burns, seizures, and fractures along with accident prevention. The class also meets OSHA standards for childcare providers.

The class will be taught over two evenings.  Each session will be between 3-4 hours.  This course includes an American Heart Association Certification valid for 2 years.  All students will receive a course training manual.

This course is available to private groups or companies at a reduced rate by special arrangement.  Many companies/business are able to reduce their insurance premiums or in some cases they may be required by law to provide instruction to their employees.  We will be more than happy to offer this program on location, or in-house to accommodate your needs.
BODY SPEC Sunglasses & Goggles Body Spec

A major goal at the SHOT show this year for Peggy and I was to find Quality Shooting glasses at a reasonable price.  We used to carry a very good popular brand but they were not affordable for many of our customers and the members of the LE community.

We looked hard at every Shooting glass vendor often spending as much as an hour with the sales reps and evaluating the value of their product.  We were suprised at the lines of people looking at the Body Spec booth.  After finally getting to see their product selection, versatility, and value the reason for the long line was obvious.

We are excited to tell you that we just received another shipment of Body Specs and if you are in the market for very versatile shooting glasses then check them out.

Body Spec says "Test your limits. Overcome your opponent". You'll need a fit body, an unbreakable determination, and a clear vision.  THE VISION TO EXCEL IS WITH BODY SPECS SUNGLASSES & GOGGLES.
With 31 years of experience, their parent company founded Body Specs 18 years ago. The 2009 product line represents 31 years of innovation, quality, manufacturing, and dedication to value. As a family owned and operated company, they constantly evolve their products with the input of their staff and customers.

They specialize in MILITARY & LAW ENFORCEMENT, TACTICAL PERSONNEL, SHOOTING, HUNTING, MOTORCYCLIST, and sport enthusiasts. Using only the highest quality materials in the construction of each individual lens and frame allows Body Spec to create stylish and aggressive designs.  Designs that they stand behind.

Their philosophy is simple, design and manufacture uncompromising sunglasses and goggles with tremendous value. Styles that let you express your individuality casual or active, fashion or function.

Check out the Body Spec quality, versatility and value next time you are in. They make great sunglasses too!
LEGISLATIVE NEWS AND SOME NEW LAWS

Good news for IDAHOAN's.

The following pro-gun bills went into effect July 1st:
House bill 65 which clarified that Idaho residents can buy long guns from dealers in non-contiguous states and vice versa.

House bill 137 which grants State parks the power to regulate discharge of firearms in campgrounds etc. but makes it  clear that they have no authority to ban lawful carry.

House bill 194 which grants immunity from liability to shooting ranges, firearms instructors, and match officials.

House bill 287 which grants immunity to employers who allow their employees to store personal firearms in their cars on company property.  Employers in Idaho now have NO LEGITIMATE REASON to ban the storage of firearms in their parking lots. If you or someone you know is affected by this kind of  anti-gun policy at work please send me a copy of the pertinent policy.

UTAH CCW UPDATE

As of July 1, 2009, Nevada will NO-LONGER honor the Utah permit.  They stated Utah's lack of a shooting qualification as the reason for the change. Remember shooting in a CTS class is our requirement to send qualified, responsible citizens for their permits not a Utah law.
 YOU TELL US......

Thanks for the ideas many of you provided last month in response to this article.  We decided to print it again to continue our appeal for product ideas.  So here it is again.

Peggy, Stephanie, and I are always trying to find new products, develop new courses, and offer new programs for you to enjoy.  As I travel teaching I always go to shops and ranges looking for new ideas.  I think we do a pretty good job but I am always looking for more.

So that is where you come in.  We are soliciting ideas from you.  Please let us know about anything we can bring into CTS.  Help us stay on top of products that you would like to see us stock.  We will do our best to be responsive to all your requests.  Thanks!
SELDOM OFFERED CLASSES

It is that time of year again when we offer a few classes that are not often scheduled.  Terminal Ballistics is a favorite of mine as it definitely sets the record straight on the lethality of handgun ammunition or handgun bullet wounds.  Long gun wounds are studied as well as a form a comparison.

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students.  The primary goal of this course is to develop in the students an understanding of terminal ballistics and the elements and physiological factors necessary for high stress shooting skills.    Critical decision making and survival are the cornerstones to all the practical exercises included in this course.

This course is perfect for the Defensive Minded Civilian, Armed Professional or Law Enforcement officer who wants to increase their understanding of how ballistics of various weapons and calibers affect the human body.  Lethal encounter case studies are discussed, and some graphic images may be presented during our lectures.

Topics included in this course include:  Lethal force considerations. Projectile Evolution, Projectile Incapacitation Parameters, 3 Dimensional Brain, Direct Trauma vs. Oxygen Deprivation, Compensatory Mechanisms, Psychology Of Surrender, Firearm Wound Proficiency, Ballistic Misconceptions, "Ideal Bullet", Central Nervous System, and the Weapon Effectiveness Continuum.  The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises.

Tactical Pistol is the other class that is coming up soon and one that you should not miss.  The small pool of eligible students is the reason this class is not offered more often.  I believe that any student that completes this class will have had more actual "Gunfight" exercises than most armed professionals.  The primary goal of this course is to develop in the students the tactical knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.  Critical decision making and survival are the cornerstones to all the practical exercises included in this course.

This course is perfect for the Serious Defensive Minded Civilian, Armed Professional or Law Enforcement officer who wants to take Tactical Shooting and Survival to the next level.  Lethal encounter case studies are discussed, practical exercises in verbal intervention, "Bad Guy" control, managing "crisis level stress", low light shooting, Partner/Family Member recovery drills, and Tactical medicine are covered.

This 2 day course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises and 6 hours of Force on Force scenarios conducted offsite.  This course will conclude with a Course Review and Examination.

Low-Light Survival is the other class offered this time of year here at CTS.  You could call this class my "Signature" course as this is the class I teach on all those trips across the country.  It is always a pleasure to teach it but never more rewarding than teaching it here in North Idaho.

The primary goal of this course is to teach the students how to cope with Low Light or No Light situations.  In addition, we will discuss and teach at least 9 methods of holding/deploying a flashlight in coordination with a firearm.   Through the use of classroom presentation and practical exercises the students will develop skills and confidence in their ability to safely engage targets in the dark.

Building search techniques, non-verbal low light communication tactics, and target identification/selection will be applied throughout the course.
Topics covered will include; Light in the tactical world, Light & your eyes, Human factors, Visual patience, Equipment essentials, light as a force option, Movement with light, and Live fire exercises.
CALLING ALL CORPORATIONS

As many of you know, each month we offer an employer (need not be a corporation) with a large number of employees a free month's membership.  In other words, it is a no-strings attached opportunity for your employees to enjoy our facility as a member.

Previous companies that have taken advantage of this offer include; Buck Knives, Kimball Office, Costco, Cabela's and many others.  Please let us know if any of your companies might want to offer your employees this FREE benefit.   If you can provide a Point of Contact, it would be appreciated.

 THE BALL AND DUMMY

I am sure at some time or another you have heard me teaching basic level students or even students in the five day comprehensive course.  I emphasize "Trigger Control" to both groups of students for different reasons.  Trigger control at the basic level or at a time in a shooter's life when recoil anticipation is an issue.  I always want to reinforce the feel or realization of smooth trigger manipulation to beginning students or as we begin to correct issues of a more experienced shooter.  Dry-Fire is another drill or technique that I often use to help students with the "Compress Surprise Break" of the trigger.

Obviously, trigger control is important to target shooting skills, but may be less critical under extreme stress conditions when you find yourself lacking fine motor skills and the other issues associated with Body Alarm Response.  During an all-out fight for your life, you're not going to be concerned with how much finger, first pad or not, is going to be on that trigger.  You're going to stick your finger in the trigger guard and pull that trigger as fast and as hard as you can to get some lead on this bad guy who's trying to take your life. It's as simple as that.

Anticipating the recoil of the firearm is a major problem often confused with "Lack of Trigger Control".  Anticipating the recoil results in a pre-ignition push, or PIP. Just before the ignition of the powder in the bullet, you push the gun with your hand. The most common of these is to push the front of the gun downward. Your brain is saying, "OK, here it comes, get ready for that loud bang," and you push the gun downward at the same time you pull the trigger backward.

Another PIP problem that is often misdiagnosed as a trigger control issue is what is commonly called "heeling the firearm." Instead of pushing the nose of the gun downward, you push it upward. Basically, you're pushing with the heel of your hand and the front of the handgun gets pushed up. Once again, your brain is subconsciously saying; "OK get ready for that big bang", and you heel the gun, anticipating recoil.

The last PIP problem is to push the gun to one side or the other. Most shooters will push the gun to their off side. This is because that's where the least amount of energy is being exerted on the gun during the gripping process. Most right-handed shooters will push the gun to their left and most left-handed shooters will push the gun to their right.

First, you have to recognize that the PIP problem is all in your head, nowhere else. You've subconsciously developed this "flinch" which results in the gun being pushed off target. You have to tell yourself, and be convinced, that you're not going to do it. If you have to, just before you pull the trigger tell yourself repeatedly that you're not going to anticipate the recoil of the firearm: "I'm not going to do it, I'm not going to do it." You have to believe that as long as you're holding the gun properly and pointing it in the right direction, you're not going to get hurt by the recoil, no matter how big of a bang the gun makes.  Convincing yourself mentally is one thing, but having it transferred to your hand is another.

To reinforce what's going on in your brain, you should perform what's called the "BALL & DUMMY DRILL." Take three or four magazines and stagger live rounds with plastic dummy rounds. Mix them up, randomly place one live, one dummy, two live, one dummy, and so forth. Now mix the magazines up so you don't know which ones are loaded which way.

Once you've done this, head out to the range and place a magazine in your gun. Place a 3X5 card or similar size target at approximately 21 feet.  Begin firing one round at a time. When you get to the dummy round, if you have a PIP problem, you'll see the gun dip, or heeled up, or pushed off to one side or the other. If this occurs, practice that mental rehearsal of telling yourself that you're not going to anticipate the recoil. Continue the ball and dummy drill until you've conquered your PIP problem.

Variation:  If you have a laser or optical sight, it's even more difficult to keep the dot perfectly on the target when the dummy comes up, and easier to diagnose the direction your PIP is taking you.

NOTE:  Over the years, I have tried every brand of dummy round I could find.  None stand up to the abuse that I put them through better than a brand called ST Action Pro.  Next time you are in the store check out the quality of the ST Action Pro.
