Welcome back to the Target Zone:

Finally summer is here...I want you to know that I am optimistic with that statement as I am writing this intro for the May newsletter while sitting in O'Hare airport on April 25th.  So I hope I am correct in assuming that by the time you read this issue, we truly are experiencing great Northwest summer weather.

I am on my way home after teaching a Low-Light Instructor certification course at the ILEETA International Law Enforcement conference in Wheeling, IL.  The conference was attended by almost 800 LE instructors from around the world.  The furthest traveled in my class were officers from Norway.  But the longest traveled conference attendees were from Australia.

What an awesome winter/spring season we had at CTS.  We enrolled more students and signed up more memberships than ever before for the same period of time.  Memberships are always a good indication of our overall performance.  It is thanks to the many members, patrons and staff that continue to help make CTS the premier facility that it is.  Our classes continue to sell out and we are working hard at scheduling as many as we can to meet the needs of our patrons.

We're not sure some of you realize how important your word-of-mouth promotion is to us.  For example, in the last few weeks we have enrolled students from Great Falls, MT., Portland, OR., Kirkland, WA., Helena, MT., Salt Lake City, UT., and many others cities.  Since we DO NOT advertise in those markets we have you to thank for your word-of-mouth referrals.  THANK YOU!

As you know training is why we exist.  We feel very confident in our class offerings and are always adjusting; modifying and enhancing our equipment, curriculum, experience, and facility to keep pace with the cutting edge training you deserve and have come accustomed to here at CTS.

April has been a very good month for us with respect to training enhancement.  For one, our long awaited ROBOT has arrived.  See the robot article below and don't forget to participate in the "Name the Robot" Contest as well. I will now have the ability to challenge my students in ways never before possible.  The robot has a 1,000 yard range so ADVANCE CARBINE students watch out when we get to Fernan in June for your course.  Oh yes...moving targets at 400 yards... you betcha!  In addition to the robot, I have now been certified to teach Basic Life Support and CPR, CCR, and the use of AED equipment.  Look for our first class in July.

Peggy and I want to thank all of you for the phenomenal support you have all given us, our staff, and particularly our new awesome manager Stephanie.  We can't say enough about our staff immediately getting behind Stephanie's leadership and for holding things together while she got both feet on the ground.  She hit the ground running much faster than I would ever have thought and shows no signs of slowing down.  I truly believe she is the exact addition we needed to our staff and will take CTS to the next level in customer service.   With Stephanie at the helm, you should all hold on for a ride that promises to be exciting, dynamic, and results in the CTS that I have dreamed about for many years.

Speaking of staff, don't miss the new employee introductions below.  Learn about our two newest staff members Joe and John.  They were hired after an exhausting process of reviewing an overwhelming number of resumes.  Thanks to all that applied.

New website coming.  Look for us to launch our new website by the end of the month.  The web address will remain the same.  The site will be more interactive, user friendly and more informative in general.  It will include an easier navigation system, interactive video and many new links.

I could go on and on here, so I guess it is a good thing that they are calling my flight for boarding.  Again a very heart felt thanks to all of you for making CTS a safe family oriented place to come and enjoy the shooting sports.

Be Safe....

motoshot THE ROBOT IS HERE!!

"Name The Robot" Contest

The ROBOT has Arrived!  He is nameless and we have to resolve that issue.  So we will be soliciting names for our newest staff member throughout the month of May.  At the end of the month we will choose a name from all your submissions and the Robot will forever be known by that name.  The person that submits the chosen name will win a very special prize.  So get those names dropped in the box at the range and good luck to everyone.

The robot will allow me to challenge students at every level.  Using the robot effectively will allow me to create learning situations that would not be possible or safe with real ammunition any other way.  Primarily purchased to be used indoors it has a range of 1,000 yards which means it will be a part of our Advanced Carbine course that we teach out at Fernan outdoor range.  I will also use the robot in our Predator defense class so I can create the unpredictable movements of a Lion or Bear.  Should be a ton of fun and challenging enough for everyone.

johnh NEW FACES

Meet John and Joe the newest additions to our staff.  John comes to us as a former law enforcement officer now pursuing a degree in the medical/health care field.  We are very fortunate to have John as a part time employee while he attends college.  He has a strong work ethic with a passion for the shooting sports and customer service.

His easy going personality and common sense approach to life in general has allowed him to fit right in with our staff.  Please take the time to introduce yourself to John the next time you are in the store.

JoeThe second new addition to our staff is Joe.  Joe is a retired law enforcement officer who loves the shooting sports as well.  He has been heard saying "Do I really get paid for coming to work here?".  Joe comes to work for us along the same path followed by some other staff members.  Joe is a member and was often found shooting here during the week.  Peg and I thought we might as well hire him since he's here all the time anyway and we may as well put him to work.

All joking aside, no individual, no staff, no management team, no facility is perfect.  What we do promise all of you is that we will continue to strive to put the right people in place and strive to offer you the very best in all we do and all we have.  I believe we are closer now than ever to reaching new heights in customer service and cutting edge training and services.

PUBLIC TAKES CONSERVATIVE TURN ON GUN CONTROL . . .

According to a survey from the Pew Research Center released late last week, public attitudes on gun control have moved in a more conservative direction over the past year. For the first time in a Pew Research survey, nearly as many people believe it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns (45 percent) than to control gun ownership (49 percent). As recently as a year ago, 58 percent said it was more important to control gun ownership while 37 percent said it was more important to protect the right to own guns.

Girls class AMMO SHORTAGE...

We are beginning to see some relief in the availability of both range ammo and defensive ammo.   The defensive ammo is still in short supply but at least we are seeing limited quantities coming in.  We went through a 4 or 5 week period where we did not get any defensive ammo delivered.  We will continue to limit the purchase of defensive ammo to two boxes per individual per visit.

In addition to the commercial ammo, we have had a very difficult time obtaining reloading supplies.  In an effort to help with this shortage we have begun selling Once Fired brass that we have cleaned and packaged in 1000 piece bags.  We are watching the internet prices for equivalent brass and we are trying to stay at least $20.00 per thousand cheaper.  That is a significant savings for our patrons especially when you add the shipping savings to the internet price.

Like everyone else in the industry, we are doing our best to get ammo and related merchandise from any source possible.  Please keep checking with us as the availability of these items changes on a daily basis.  Here today gone tomorrow!

RELOADING...  A few Thoughts!

I am sure many of you read in the newspaper about the patron that injured himself while shooting in our range in April.  The shooter was using ammunition that he reloaded at home on his progressive reloading press.  There was what appears to have been a DOUBLE CHARGE of powder loaded into one cartridge.  That cartridge when fired caused the top round in the magazine to discharge as well and together the combined energy of both rounds caused the firearm to have a catastrophic failure.  The shooter was NOT seriously injured and walked out of the range with a few scratches.  He was subsequently checked out at the hospital and sent home.

The practice of reloading is very common and very safe.  Reloading is becoming much more popular now that ammunition is limited by supply and increasing cost.  However, knowledge of the reloading process and the associated safety issues, procedures and fail-safes are critical to everyone's overall safety and enjoyment.

In June we are offering a reloading class taught by Master reloader, Jim Parmen.  If you are presently reloading, thinking of reloading, or just curious about the process, or the potential cost savings realized by reloading, don't miss this class.  Jim has forgotten more about reloading than I have ever known and he is a phenomenal resource of information.

See Jim's Tip on reloading below and don't forget to join Jim in June for the ultimate in reloading instruction.

 RELOADING TIP From Jim

Reloading metallic cartridges can be as simple or as complex as we choose to make it.  Perfectly acceptable hunting, plinking, or recreational shooting ammunition can be assembled quickly and efficiently using very basic techniques with minimal tools and equipment.  These basics are commonly sold as 'starter kits' or can be purchased individually if desired.

Many of us who have reloaded for a while tend to adopt procedures and methods that are touted by 'experts' as making ammunition that is more "accurate, consistent, concentric, reliable, . . ." (you pick the adjective)  Most of these procedures and methods require that we buy a new tool, gadget, or measuring device of some sort.

Popular consensus holds that seating bullets as straight and concentric as possible has a positive effect on the accuracy of ammunition, whether direct from the factory or from our reloading bench.  How can we do that?

Here's a simple method that costs nothing, and has been shown to marginally but measurably, improve the concentricity of seated bullets.
Girls class

Simply start by 'feeling' the bullet go about halfway into the case neck, then back your press off and spin the case 180 degrees before completing the press stroke.  This tends to self correct any canting of the bullet that may have occurred when it began its journey into the case mouth.  If you want to prove or disprove that theory, here's a tool that can, among other things, measure the run-out or 'crookedness' of a bullet after seating.

casemaster

Other ways of addressing the concentricity issue include case neck turning/reaming or using so called 'competition' seating dies.  There is even a tool available that will not only measure run-out, but allow you to actually straighten the bullet after it is seated!

So, whether you choose to go simple or complex, join us June 16th for our reloading seminar and we'll explore some of the possibilities.
